Yes, Virginia, there is an Ernie Kovacs website! This fansite was launched in October 1996 to aid you, the Ernie Kovacs fan, in finding out more about the "madcap magyar" of TV (as he was often reffered to in ad copy in the 1950s). Since then, more than 13,000 people (including Edie Adams) have visited and revisited this site. Ernie Kovacs tapes, Ernie Kovacs books, Ernie Kovacs CD's and LP's, memorabilia, the official fan club, Percy Dovetonsils poetry, vintage interviews and articles, and more! Enter by clicking below... During the mid-1950s, Ernie Kovacs' shows were done in New York, and were broadcast nationally. The network demanded he have a live studio audience, something he had not used up to that point. Kovacs was opposed to having a live audience, as his comedy was visual and designed to be watched on a TV set. And so, he had the tickets for his show printed up with the words "Admit One Passing Stranger" on it. "I'd like to thank you all for inviting me into your living rooms this evening. It's just a shame you didn't straighten up a little."

ERNIE KOVACS Actor / Comedian Kovacs was an innovative and absurdist TV comedian of the 1950s. In a series of local and national shows none lasting more than a year Kovacs introduced comic characters like the Nairobi Trio (three mechanical musicians in ape masks and derby hats) and the lisping poet Percy Dovetonsils. Inventive and playful, Kovacs is sometimes credited with inspiring later offbeat comedians like Steve Martin and David Letterman . Kovacs also had a short film career, playing a corrupt policeman in the spy spoof Our Man in Havana and a gold rush con man opposite John Wayne in North to Alaska (both in 1960). He was killed in a 1962 car crash in Los Angeles.
Extra credit : Kovacs's cigar was a trademark prop, and he did a series of creative commercials for Dutch Masters cigar company... Kovacs was married twice, the second time to Edie Adams, a singer and actress who appeared on his show... Kovacs was played by actor Jeff Goldblum in the 1984 TV movie Between the Laughter
Kovacs appears with General George Patton in our loop Death By Car . He also makes a brief appearance in the loop Tonight Show Hosts

Ernie Kovacs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Ernie Kovacs January 23 January 13 ) was a creative and inovative entertainer from the early days of television . His on-air antics would go on to inspire TV shows like Saturday Night Live and TV hosts like David Letterman Kovacs was rarely seen without a cigar in his hand. His live shows were unique at the time because of their ad-libbed routines, experimentation with video effects (including superimpositions, reverse polarity, and reverse scanning which flipped images upside down), and a willingness to break the " fourth wall " by allowing viewers see activity beyond the set - including crew members and, on occasion, outside the studio itself.

A SHORT HISTORY OF ERNIE KOVACS Ernie Kovacs is perhaps the greatest role model that any comedian can have, especially any comedian who wants to get into television. Born on January 23rd, 1919 in Trenton, New Jersey, Ernest Edward Kovacs has often been referred to as “Television’s Original Genius.” Believe me, folks, this is a moniker that is quite appropriate when used to describe this brilliant man. While in high school, Ernie was influenced greatly by his drama teacher, Harold Van Kirk. Upon graduation he went to acting school and through a series of bizarre events ended up as a Disc Jockey on Trenton radio station WTTM. The affable and hysterically funny Ernie quickly became a huge hit with Trentonians and soon had his own newspaper column. This led to a stint starting in 1949-50 at WPTZ-TV, the NBC affiliate in Philadelphia. The medium was brand new, and Ernie was young and brimming with fresh and innovative ideas to bring to this new toy. And in bringing his considerable gifts to the airwaves, he changed the way we view television forever. He was the first performer to realize how to use television’s intrinsic qualities to make a comedically visual statement. And, he created characters which influenced everyone from SNL to David Letterman and beyond. Read the book Kovacsland by Diana Rico to find out more.

The Ernie Kovacs Show originated in Philadelphia, circa 1952, and was later picked up by ABC, where it ran until Kovacs perished in a car accident on January 13, 1962. The show was like nothing of its kind, before or since: even the most straight-ahead material was slightly askew literally so, as in one famous episode. At times it resembled surrealist performance art more than any orthodox tomfoolery. Take, for example, the Nairobi Trio, clad in derbies, trenchcoats, and gorilla masks, beating each other across the noggin with mallets and vases to the tune of "Solfeggio," which would be a standard lounge number if not for the utterly incoherent vocal chorus. Kovacs loved music, and made a point of incorporating his favorite songs into the show. His theme song, "Oriental Blues," is a lovely bit of stride piano with a drummer that sounds like Gene Krupa. Two versions bookend the disc. Though he often used the tunes as accompaniment for his skits, he also featured live performances on his show. Kovacs' widow Edie Adams (they duet on "The Wrong Man") has kinescopes of the old shows, but this compilation includes only the original versions, which is probably better for the fidelity. Let's see, you've got Leona Anderson, whose work was unironically released on Horrible Records; the manipulated-piano duo Ferrante and Teicher, who appear three times on this album; Wolfgang Neuss' "Moritatensanger," "Mack The Knife" in kraut-speak; and others, including Kovacs himself, who performs "Indian Love Call" with Adams, as well as his own "Hot Cakes and Sausage."

Randy Hodgins and Steve McLellan welcome you Ernie Kovacs (1919-1962) When comic genius Ernie Kovacs died in a car accident just short of his 43 rd Laugh-In and Monty Python's Flying Circus which drew heavily on the Kovacs style. He married singer Edie Adams in 1954 and moved to Hollywood to embark on a film career. Unfortunately, while Kovacs was a master of the small screen, the film world never really knew what to make of the mad genius of comedy and few of his screen roles are considered memorable. Perhaps his portrayal of occult author Sidney Redlitch in the 1958 James Stewart fantasy/comedy Bell, Book and Candle is most memorable, especially since the hipster-jazz-mystical mood of the film fit the Kovacs style so well. Kovacs personal child custody battles with his first wife were made into a TV movie in 1984 called Ernie Kovacs: Between the Laughter

Tell me when this page is updated Ernie Kovacs at WPTZ in 1952 Nationally known comedian Ernie Kovacs came to WPTZ in January of 1950 from radio station WTTM in nearby Trenton, NJ, where Ernie grew up. He pioneered the use of blackouts and trick photography in TV comedy. His first show was PICK YOUR IDEAL, a weekly fashion show. Ernie showed up for the audition dressed in his shorts and a barrel. He got the job. Then he did another show entitled, "Deadline for Dinner, an afternoon program." It was supposed to be a straight show, but Kovacs played it anything but straight. The chef was Albert Mathis (chef and manager of the Gulph Mills Country Club) and they got into a funny bit and literally forgot what they were cooking.
In Philadelphia, Ernie created a bunch of his hysterical characters like Percy Dovetonsils, the lisping goody-goody; the French storyteller Pierre Ragout; Skodny Silsky, ace Hollywood reporter and the Edwardian-clothed Nairobi Trio.
At Channel 3, Kovacs hosted several different programs including "Three to Get Ready." It was originally on from 7:30 am to 9 am. Eventually, it expanded to two full hours starting at 7 am. The show premiered on November 27, 1950 and is reported to have been the very first early morning wake-up television show anywhere. Ironic that a newspaper listing at that time (The Evening Bulletin) described the show as "news, music, weather." Andy McKay thought that this program was the best of Ernie Kovacs at WPTZ. The concept was to turn on Channel 3 and get ready to go to work. Sort of a local Today show, but it turned into a Kovacs vehicle. This show, according to Andy McKay was a "mish-mash" from other programs. A piece of this, a bit of that.

KOVACS, ERNIE U.S. Comedian Ernie Kovacs, a creative and iconoclastic comedian, pioneered the use of special effects photography in television comedy. On the 50th anniversary of the beginning of television in 1989, People Weekly recognized him as one of television's top 25 stars of all time. During the 1950s, Kovacs' brilliant use of video comedy demonstrated the unique possibilities of television decades before similar techniques became popular on Rowan and Martin's Laugh In and the various David Letterman shows. His live shows were characterized by ad-libbed routines, enormous flexibility with the TV camera, experimentation with video effects, complete informality while on camera, and a permissiveness that expanded studio boundaries by allowing viewers to see activity beyond the set.1 His routines frequently parodied other programs and introduced imaginative Kovacsian characters such as the magician Natzoh Hepplewhite, Professor Bernie Cosnowski, and Mr. Question Man, who resembled Johnny Carson's Carnac the Magnificent. The best known of his creations was the Nairobi Trio, three ape instrumentalists playing "Solfeggio" in a deadpan manner like mechanical monkeys. The high point come when the percussionist turned jerkily to the conductor and bopped him on the head with a xylophone hammer.

THE ERNIE KOVACS SHOW(VARIOUS) U.S. Comedy/Variety Program In a few brief years in the 1950s there were actually a number of different Ernie Kovacs shows. The first, Ernie in Kovaksland, originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and appeared on NBC from July until August 195 1. The Ernie Kovacs Show (first known as Kovacs Unlimited) was programmed on CBS from December 1952 to April 1953 opposite Milton Berle on NBC. Yet another Ernie Kovacs Show aired on NBC from December 195 5 to September 1956. The existence of these separate shows is testament to both the success and failure of Ernie Kovacs. A brilliant and innovative entertainer, he was a failure as a popular program host; praised by critics, he was avoided by viewers. Kovacs was one of the first entertainers to understand and utilize the television as a true "medium," capable of being conceived and applied in a variety of ways. He recognized the potential of live electronic visual technology and manipulated its peculiar qualities to become a master of the sight gag. Characters in pictures on the walls moved; sculptures undulated; pilots flew away without their planes. For one gag that lasted only a few seconds he spent $12,000: when a salesman (played by Kovacs) slapped the fender of a used car, the car fell though a platform. According to Kovacs, 'Eighty percent of what I do is in the category of sight gags, no pantomime. I work on the incongruity of sight against sound."
