HOARSBY AT LARGE PRESENTS: SOME ERNIE KOVACS ANECDOTES FROM ED SILVERMAN, FORMER OVERNIGHT NEWS EDITOR OF WABC RADIO Hi, Folks. Al "Hoarsby" Quagliata here. This collection of anecdotes from Ernie Kovacs' WABC Radio Days was gotten the same way that I get most tidbits about Ernie. As you saw if you've read my interview with Kovacs cameraman Bob Kemp, it seems that I always run into nice folks who know someone who knew or worked with Ernie. This in turn gives me great interviews, stories, etc. to pass onto the fans. (If you haven't read my interview with Bob Kemp you can link to it at the bottom of this page). A fellow comedian named Rob Blatt (a very talented man in his own right who I've had the pleasure to perform sketch and improv with) knows I'm a Kovacs fan. He works with Ed Silverman, who was the overnight news editor and news announcer during Ernie's tenure at WABC radio in New York City. Rob got Ed and I together via email. Thanks Rob! I contacted Ed and said I would like to email him some interivew questions. Well, much to my surprise and pleasure he went out of his way to email me some great anecdotes about his days around Ernie Kovacs, making my job all the more easy. I have posted these stories below, verbatim except for format corrections, and I sincerely hope you will enjoy them. Thanks Ed! The genius of Ernie's early television shows on WPTZ, the most famous being "Three To Get Ready," is that they incorporated the best of his radio work combined with the new visual medium. Unfortunately no known copy of "Three To Get Ready" exists (its on the Museum of Television and Radios' top ten wish list) and I have never heard of anyone, including the Museum, having audio from Ernie's WTTM or WABC radio shows (if any of you out there do have segments, let me know). The one thing I have heard is a segment called "Star-Time," which were a series of five minute segments that ran on WNBC Radio in the late 1950's. They featured a variety of celebrities doing pieces on whatever struck their fancies. The ones I've heard with Ernie usually have him doing Percy Dovetonsils reading stuff like "Repunzel" in his own inimitable fashion. These are available for listening at the Museum of Television and Radio in New York City, and I suppose the one in Los Angeles as well.

For my visitors who have not yet heard of Ernie Kovacs, I can only say that the twists of his free-thinking mind were the URSPRUNG (orgins) of television comedy as an art form. All subsequent 'free-wheeling' shows (excluding the banal sit coms), from "Laugh In" to "That Was The Week That Was" to "Saturday Night Live" descended from traditions started by Kovacs. He is a figure enjoyably worthy of your recognition. When I was a boy, I lived and worked on a 220 acre tobacco farm on the edge of Jefferson County, Kentucky. Provided the television was functioning, I looked forward each week to another broadcast production of The Ernie Kovacs show. Though I enjoyed the surprises and humor, I was deeply impressed with Kovacs' poise, charm and intellectectual power. Yet he was anything but stuffy. I admired the joyful bemusement by which he manipulated the technology freely as he injected fine art (paintings, sculptures and music) as props and focal points in skits. I can still see his face in the TV screen in the one show when he announced to the audience that they were going to perform Concerto for Orchestra by Bela' Bartok (born in Nagyszentmiklos, Hungary, now Sinnicolau Mare, Romania on March 25, 1881 died in New York City of leukemia five years after immigrating to the U.S.A. on September 26, 1945 see also:

Ernie Kovacs January 23, 1919 to January 13, 1962 It's Been Real There is only one comedian in contemporary television history who is considered to have fully understood the potential of the medium. That comedian is Ernie Kovacs. Kovacs, an American Hungarian born on January 23, 1919 in Trenton, New Jersey, got his start in radio on a local basis then eventually moved into television. During its infancy, television was nothing more than a medium in which to see people moving around in. What was once considered vaudevillian, found its way into television: singing, dancing, and verbal comedy. To Kovacs, that kind of material was kiddie stuff. He was a comedian of unique sophistication for his time and has many times been called an acquired taste in the world of comedy. Who could forget the Nairobi Trio? Three people dressed up in gorilla masks, bowler hats and overcoats playing musical instruments with Kovacs conducting them was possibly the most innovative form of early music video. Kovacs would occassionally get clobbered over the head with the drumsticks, every movement the Nairobi Trio made was carefully choreographed to the "Solfeggio" tune immediately took its place in classic television comedy. Other wild characters he created were: Miklos Molnar, the chef and sometime sculptor, Auntie Gruesome the storyteller, and Wolfgang von Saurbrauten the German disc jockey. The visual extremes Kovacs created has earned him the title of comedy genius of the 1950's. Unlike the rest of the great comics of the time, including Sid Caesar, Jackie Gleason, and Milton Berle, Kovacs refused to become part of the conformist style of comedy. Kovacs was so original, so unique in his own style he has been called a man ahead of his time. Television viewers of his decade were not quite prepared to accept his style yet he received some of the highest criticism for his work. It was for his last filming of "Eugene", an innocent who lives in a world of silence save for the noise effects surrounding him, in which Kovacs received a posthumous Emmy after his death.

He'd hang a cardboard "control panel" over his chest and turn the horizontal hold. His lips would contort, his cheeks would squish and he'd croak, "No, too far!" He'd sit on a tree limb and casually saw it away. Then the tree itself would topple, while both branch and Kovacs remained suspended in mid-air. He'd open the novel "Camille." From inside the covers, a lady's consumptive cough would sound. The Kovacs style was a gag-oriented, camera-conscious brand of humor. Nothing like it had ever been attempted when Ernie Kovacs first began making TV audiences howl in 1950. And for a dozen, freewheeling years, Kovacs did it so well that some critics believe he'll never be topped. Kovacs was a Trenton kid before he was a celebrity.
