Charles Kuralt Learning Center to open March 31 "We’ve recreated the office as much as possible as a tribute to Charles and to his excellence as a journalist," said Richard Cole, School dean. "Charles had a soft spot in his heart for our school, and we’re mighty grateful to Mrs. Kuralt and the family." The drive, which raised more than $300,000, was for the Charles Kuralt Memorial Project at UNC-CH. That project had two components: the Charles Kuralt Collection in the UNC-CH Library, and the Kuralt Learning Center in the school. The fund drive was led by Gene and Saralyn Oberdorfer of Atlanta and Jim and Mary Lou Babb of Charlotte. "We and the other founders were privileged to participate in making the learning center and the library archives available to the public and hope that present and future students will use the center to enhance their lives," Gene Oberdorfer said. For the Kuralt Center, funds were used to digitize much of Kuralt’s TV works, including the famous CBS "On the Road" episodes so center visitors may watch the programs using touch-screen technology. The programs may be viewed on touch-screen TV monitors in three places in Carroll Hall.

    CHARLES KURALT REMEMBERED
    July 4, 1997
Jim Lehrer remembers the work of Charles Kuralt. Charles Kuralt one of the most distinguished voices in American journalism, died in New York City, July 4, from complications from lupus. He was 62 years old. Kuralt, best known for his "On the Road" dispatches and his "Sunday Morning" broadcast, joined CBS News in 1957. Upon hearing of his death, President Clinton released a statement saying, "Charles Kuralt's extraordinary imagination and skill gave America a unique view of itself. He helped us see the beauty and strength of character of our small towns and countryside. In so doing, he brought all members of the American family closer together. His passing on Independence Day reminds us in a poignant way of God's gift that is America." He will be remembered. CHARLES KURALT: You can’t drive very far on the back roads before you make a splendid discovery: America is not homogenized, not yet. Her accents are as different as her landscapes. That is the authentic sound of December in the Chesapeake Bay country, but take a gander at that old gander. She’s Erline Snow, who learned goose talk 60 years ago down home at Powells Point, North Carolina, and has been conversing with the Canada geese every autumn since. Hiroshi Naguchi doesn’t fool around.

    Charles Kuralt's People
Timeless, insightful and entertaining, Charles Kuralt's award-winning "People" columns lived but for one brief year - 1956. Kuralt went to CBS; "People" went to reside only on microfilm. Until now. Written while Kuralt was a reporter for the Charlotte News, "People" appears collectively in print for the first time ever. The 169 columns, written when Kuralt was only 22, represent some of the bard's best work and mark the beginning of a dialog that the journalist continued with Americans for more than four decades. Resonating with themes of hope and goodness, "People" still appears as fresh and relevant today as in 1956, a testament to the extraordinary talent of a reporter who found stories where no one else thought to look. "Each day I would seek out some cop or kid or cab driver," Kuralt wrote of his experience at the Charlotte News, "and tell his story in a few hundred words . . . I used to walk bravely up to panhandlers and crapshooters - the sort of people others avoided - and strike up conversation." Those conversations will ring familiar to those who watched Kuralt's Emmy-winning television shows "On the Road" and "Sunday Morning." Kuralt's style and substance were essentially unchanged over the years - from his days as a rookie reporter to his final years as a veteran journalist.

The Charles Kuralt Learning Center , in Carroll Hall, is a showplace of the School. Kuralt's widow, Suzanna, donated the contents of his penthouse office in Manhattan to the School. "We've recreated the office as much as possible as a tribute to Charles and to his excellence as a journalist," said Richard Cole, dean of the School. "Charles had a soft spot in his heart for our School, and we're mighty grateful to Mrs. Kuralt and the family." The office suite, in Carroll 281, symbolized Kuralt in many ways. It is solid, sturdy and elegant, with Oriental rugs, paneled walls and a brick fireplace. Memorabilia from Charles' long career covers the walls. The tall mahogany bookshelves hold 12 of his Emmys and two of his Peabody awards. "Charles referred to it as a gentleman's writing room," said Karen Beckers, Kuralt's assistant and longtime colleague at CBS. "He wanted it to have some charm and elegance. He didn't want a sterile working environment." In addition to being open to visitors, the center is a site for students to study Kuralt's work and is used for special occasions. Anyone who would like to tour the Kuralt Learning Center is welcome 1-4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Arrangements also may be made for other times by calling (919) 962-1204.

    Charles Kuralt and television
    By Allan R. Andrews
Managing Editor, Pacific Stars and Stripes, Tokyo, Japan.
Originally published, Sunday, February 11. 1996
I n his heart, Charles Kuralt must be more a writer than a television broadcaster.
The TV host who popularized being ``on the road'' despite his assured deference to writer Jack Kerouac and singer Willie Nelson, tells us as much between the lines of his latest travelogue.
Of course, I've always considered Kuralt a good writer; it showed in his bearing before the camera that he was a man enamored with the language written.
Not that TV and writing can't go together.
Kuralt's success as a writer of bestsellers undoubtedly owes much to the recognition television affords him.
What never struck me until I read his latest book, however, is the mild but persistent disdain Kuralt harbors toward television.
Kuralt's book, Charles Kuralt's America, details his trips and has some telling comments tucked away amid his paeans of praise and adoration for a near-dozen outstanding places in the United States.
Unlike his previous outings across the states, Kuralt made this latest sojourn by himself. Without any mobile caravan, without cameras other than what he carried, without technicians, without producer-directors, without public relations people; in fact, without CBS, his long-term employer with whom, Kuralt says, he carried on a 37-year love affair.
