http://www.hep.phy.cam.ac.uk/~parker/atlas/physics/meeting3/slides/stuff.html
The afternoon was spent considering the question of what type of computing organisation was best for the UK and how this might relate to the MOU introduced by the computing review. The feelings of the meeting seemed to be that it was worth using the MOU as a spur to consider things that we could do on a UK wide basis, but that there would still be software activities which were not practical to be covered by an MOU. It was also felt that we do not want to have a situation so inflexible that people are deterred from doing a software job that is not covered by an MOU. The following activities were considered as possible candidates for an MOU
  • Trigger performance with John Baines (RAL), Simon George (RHUL), Roger Jones and Maria Smizanska (Lancaster), Chris Booth and Mark Lehto (Sheffield) and Alan Watson (Birmingham) This is work that is already going on. SCT simulation within GEANT4 with Jo Pater and Steve Snow (Manchester), Chris Lester (Cambridge), Bill Murray (RAL) and Tim Brodbeck (Lancaster) Offline control framework with David and Rosemary Candlin (Edinburgh), Steve Fisher (RAL) and Peter Clarke and another person from UCL. Though this is likely to be a job that needs doing we need to hear from for the architecture task force first.

CHRIS PORTER Administrative Director, Instructor E-MAIL CHRIS Chris Porter is the Administrative Director and Instructor of CDS Outdoor, Inc. and one of its original founders. He is responsible for the day to day administrative functions of the organization. Chris started with his wilderness training as many people did, in the Boy Scouts. This helped to lay the foundation for years of wilderness, medical, and rescue experience. Chris joined Civil Air Patrol (CAP) in 1986 and was a member until 1993. Here he specialized in Emergency Services, specifically Search and Rescue. His positions included Ground Team Leader, Ranger Team Commander, Leadership Officer, and Emergency Services Officer. In addition to CAP, Chris also served in the PA National Guard from 1989 to 2000. He was a combat medical specialist with a medical clearing company. He became a NREMT in October 1990 and PA EMT in June 1991. It was here that Chris learned a great deal about wilderness (and primitive) medicine. Chris' responsibilities included: Ambulance Platoon Section Leader, Platoon Training Coordinator, and Emergency Evacuation NCO. He also learned that you can roll a Humvee Ambulance if you try hard enough.

    65. The HUB
    THE MINISTER OF PITCH (6'42 ) 1988 Tim Perkis composer Tim Perkis performersJohn Bischoff, Scot Greshamlancaster, Phil Stone, chris Brown, Tim Perkis.
    http://www.artifact.com/hub.html
    The HUB
    THE HUB is a computer music band whose members are all designers and builders of their own hardware and software instruments. The group electronically coordinates the activity of their individual systems through a central micro-computer, The Hub itself, as well as manually through ears, eyes, and hands. THE HUB IS: JOHN BISCHOFF, TIM PERKIS, CHRIS BROWN, SCOT GRESHAM-LANCASTER, ... PHIL STONE
    Tracks:
    The Hub originally came about as a way to clean up a mess. John Bischoff, Jim Horton and myself played for several years in a group called The League of Automatic Music Composers, the first microcomputer network band. Every time we rehearsed, a compli-cated set of ad-hoc connections between computers had to be made. This made for a system with rich and varied behavior, but it was prone to failure, and bringing in other players was difficult. Later we sought a way to open the process up, to make it easier for other musicians to play in the network situation. The result was the Hub, a small computer dedicated to passing messages between players. It serves as a common memory, keeping information about each player's activity that is accessible to the other players' computers. I see the aesthetic informing this work perhaps counter to other trends in computer music: instead of attempting to gain more complete control over every aspect of the music, we seek more surprise through the lively and unpredictable response of these systems, and hope to encourage an active response to surprise in the playing. And instead of trying to eliminate the imperfect human performer, we try to use the electronic tools available to enhance the social aspect of music making.

    Mystery Picture #30
    This is the heavy-lift craneship Saipem 7000 , seen at Halifax (Dartmouth), Nova Scotia early in 1998. This giant craft has two cranes, each with a 7,000 ton lift capacity, for a total lift of 14,000 tons. It is by far the largest floating crane in the world.
    Mystery Picture #31
    This photo shows Bath Iron Works in 1957. The destroyers at the fitting-out pier and on the building ways are Forrest Sherman (DD 931) class ships. The two ships afloat are DuPont (DD 941) and Bigelow (DD 942) (DD 941 is probably outboard); those on the ways are (right to left) Hull (DD 945), Edson (DD 946) and Somers (DD 947). The northern part of the yard is shown here much as it is today, but considerable expansion to the south (left in this view) has since taken place. Today there are only three building ways, rather than four, and they are served by two very large cranes. A further expansion project, now underway, will see replacement of the old building ways by a modern land-level assembly/launch facility. The ships shown here have not been so fortunate: DuPont and Bigelow now await scrapping;

But even though that choice isn't possible, Blanton is excited at just the latest honor bestowed on her as one of the state's best. The Ohio State-bound senior center was named co-Player of the Year in Division I to headline the 2002-2003 Associated Press Division I and II girls All-Ohio high school basketball teams announced Monday.

    Lancaster defense puts squeeze on Cougars
    By DAVE PURPURA, dpurpura@nncogannett.com
    E-G Assistant Sports Editor Monday night's 66-46 win over Westland showed exactly how convincing the Lancaster boys basketball team can be when it dominates all four quarters something it hadn't done since the season opener against Marion Harding. For the first time since that game 32 days ago, Lancaster won every quarter of a game. Their defense was spotless for the most part and any sloppiness came amidst liberal substitutions long after the game had been decided.
