By Bob Lancaster S ome days I missed, when the proceedings got too tedious or too depressing, but most days I sat through those boys' murder trials. Sat out in the cheap seats, the back pews, with victims' relatives and defendants' relatives, where every face, right down the line, showed the strain of enduring grief. Faces tightened or twisted or sunken with hollows, eyes with the life cried out of them or leached out by long insomnia. There were three defendantsall boys, not a one of them threatening any time soon to cross over into adulthood. One in the first trial, Jessie Misskelley Jr., age 18 now but mentally probably not half that. Two in the second trialDamien Echols, 19, said to be the principal killer, who hatched the crime; Jason Baldwin, 16, looking 14, named as associate killer. Three teenage boys charged with killing three small boys, second graders, on the balmy, mosquito-swarmed evening of May 5, 1993, at West Memphis. The victims were Steve Branch, Chris Byers, and Michael Moore. All eight years old. Friends, out playing together late that afternoon. Snatched up, probably at twilight time, in or near a patch of woods not far from Interstate 40a happy sylvan hideaway "with hills and trails and woods, with places to play and explore," the prosecutor said. Stripped, hogtied with their shoelaces, tortured: one of them, Chris, bleeding to death after being mutilated (his penis cut off, among other knife wounds); all of them tossed naked and still bound into a drainage ditch where Michael and Steve, the two who were still alive despite having had their skulls bashed in, drowned.

The reigning monarch the weak Lancastrian King Henry VI (who also suffered periods of madness) His week leadership developed the rivalry between the two houses which flared up in warfare in 1455 at the battle of St Albans. in 1461 King Henry VI was deposed and the Yorkist claimant Edward IV became king. The fighting still continued and in 1470 Kind Henry VI was re crowned. Edward IV rallied his Yorkist army at the battle of Tewksbury captured Queen Margaret, and Killed The Young Edward (son of King Henry and Queen Margaret). Soon after this battle Henry IV died mysteriously soon after. This ended the main period of the Civil war.

On Sunday May 5th Chris and Dan went to Bradford to take part in the North of England Open which is a national ranking event. Chris, fighting in the black belts section, was overweight and had to move up to the under 81kg category. Combined with his exhaustion having just returned from Lancaster this gave Chris some tough conditions to be competing under, but he rose to the occasion and secured a bronze medal. Dan, fighting in the under 73kg category of the lower grades section, fought very well, winning three fights to get a silver medal. At the BUSA Nationals in Birmingham we had four entrants. Chris fought in the Dan grades under 73kg, fighting well and securing fifth place. In the Kyu grades under 73kg category Dan fought exceptionally well, winning through to the semi-finals before securing the bronze medal in his first BUSA's. In the Kyu grades under 81kg both Richard and Nick excelled in their first BUSA's. Both reached the semi-finals, where Richard was unlucky to lose before claiming fifth. Nick won his semi-final and then dominated the final to bring a national gold medal back to York! The team of Will, Dan, Richard and Nick went to Paris to fight in an international Kyu grade team competition. Drawn in the 'Group of Death' with hosts Paris and strongly fancied Gdansk, they all fought well, unluckily losing a narrow match with Paris before raising their game but ultimately being outclassed by eventual bronze medallists Gdansk Coach Chris was a surprise call up as a substitute for the Birmingham Dan grades team where he made the York squad feel better by being taken apart by Polish and Slovenian opponents..
