1982/3 - A BROADWAY REVIVAL AND TELEVISION PRODUCTION
next film

Eva Le Gallienne's classic stage version of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" has been around for a good number of years and there are records of it being performed as long ago as 1932. The most remembered performance was at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway in 1947 with dancer Bambi Linn in the lead role.
Bambi Linn looks up as Eva Le Gallienne, playing the White Queen, flies in.
Gallienne revived the adaptation on and around Broadway in the late seventies with Kate Burton playing Alice. Bambi Linn, by this time in her fifties but still involved in dance as a choreographer, was movement co-ordinator for this revival. In 1982 it was adapted as a play for television. Kirk Browning directed, Kate Burton reprised the role of Alice, and her father, Richard Burton, played the White Knight, along with an 'unforgettable all-star cast'. The 1947 musical score by Richard Addinsell and Jonathan Tunick was retained.
Also in the cast were Eve Arden, Kaye Ballard, Maureen Stapleton, James Coco, Tony Cummings

54. Talkin' Broadway
Accepting a cue from eva le gallienne's Civic Repertory, LawrenceLangner and the Theater Guild were leaders in this concept. The

The Great Depression Part Two In August of 1930, Cardinal Hayes, heading up the Catholic Theater League, attacked a number of productions as "obscene". In addition, Frank Gillmore, then president of Actor's Equity also spoke out against "salacious" shows. Gillmore was afraid that such shows would increase the argument for public censorship. In an effort to thwart the possibility of imposed censorship, Gillmore and others sponsored a program similar to one already adopted by Hollywood for self-censorship. Ed Wynn, who brought Simple Simon to the Shuberts' Philadelphia theater, refused to appear until the showcards for the next attraction, Earl Carroll's Sketch Book , were removed from the lobby. Wynn was afraid that the photos would upset the family trade and discourage business. This on-going war of the writers vs. the righteous would not have a specific conclusion, as we know from recent events with the production of Corpus Christi Though it would seem that this should have been a decade of loss for artistic theater, it was actually a period of major transformation and growth. While the economic state of the country worsened, the Broadway community rallied again. An estimated 25,000 theater people were displaced by the effects of the depression, the majority in New York. In some theaters, prices were dropped to a 25-cent minimum, with a $1.00 top price. Actors and producers experimented with repertory productions, to keep as many working as often as possible, and to keep as many productions as possible active.

History of the Mirror Rep.
The Mirror Repertory Company, aka Mirror Theatre Ltd., was founded in l983. It was a daring return to the European theatre style of alternating repertory theatre a different play each night as in the ballet and the opera. The Mirror Repertory Company was founded through the vision of Sabra Jones McAteer, supported by others such as John Strasberg, then Ms. Jones McAteer's husband, who represented the tradition of The Group Theatre, by Eva Le Gallienne, who represented the tradition of not only alternating repertory but also of an actor-manager run theatre, by Geraldine Page, who represented the best of mid-twentieth century acting, and by the Hon. Anthony D. Marshall, former Ambassador to Kenya and the Seychelles, all of whom signed in incorporation papers for the non-profit company. Laurance S. Rockefeller was the founding patron. There had been no such company since the APA Phoenix, headed by the late Ellis Raab, though there were examples of the art form in other states, such as Tyrone Guthrie's theatre in Minnesota. The Vivian Beaumont at Lincoln Center was built for repertory theatre but never functioned as such. As a prelude to the Mirror Rep's first season, Ms. Jones McAteer and the Hon. Anthony D. Marshall mounted a Broadway production of Eva Le Gallienne's ALICE IN WONDERLAND, which opened at the Virginia Theatre, giving Kate Burton her first Broadway job and starring Ms. Le Gallienne as the White Queen. WNET 13 invested in the production, the first sort of participation of a non-profit organization in a Broadway company. ALICE IN WONDERLAND later became a production of WNET 13, again starring Kate Burton, with her father, Richard Burton, appearing as the White Knight, the only time they ever appeared together on film. Others in the televised special included the late Colleen Dewhurst, the late Eve Arden, Austin Pendleton, and many other luminaries. ALICE IN WONDERLAND on Broadway also gave a first job to Mary Stuart Masterson, who played a card, and to Nicholas Martin, the director of the recent production of HEDDA GABLER, starring Kate Burton.
