LUCILLE LORTEL FOUNDER AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Lucille Lortel, Founder and Artistic Director of the White Barn Theatre 1947-1999, made her Broadway debut in the 1925 Theatre Guild production of Caesar and Cleopatra with Helen Hayes. As an actress, she was also seen in Belasco's The Dove with Judith Anderson, and as Poppy in the touring company of The Shanghai Gesture with Florence Reed. She played the lead in The Man Who Laughed Last with Sessue Hayakawa, both on stage and in the screen version which was one of the first talking films. She also played leading roles in movie shorts and on radio. Lucille Lortel founded the White Barn Theatre, which was established in 1947 for the purpose of presenting works of an unusual and experimental nature. This theatre was created to develop the talents of new playwrights, composers, actors, directors and designers, and to allow established artists to open themselves up to new directions in their careers by performing in pieces they might not have been able to do in commercial theatre. She has premiered such plays as Eugene Ionesco's The Chairs , Sean O'Casey's Red Roses for Me , Murray Schisgal's The Typists , Paul Zindel's The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds , Terrence McNally's Next , Edward Albee's Fam and Yam , Samuel Beckett's Embers , Archibald MacLeish's This Music Crept by Me Upon the Waters , Lewis John Carlino's Objective Case , James Weldon Johnson's Trumpets of the Lord , Adrienne Kennedy's The Owl Answers , Norman Rosten's

01-22 TABLE of CONTENTS: Women have suffered most from the relocation of American industries to Asia or Mexico Hitler and Women Excerpt from Killing Orders ... QUOTES by Justice Blackmun, Adolph Hitler, Eva Le Gallienne, and from Roe v Wade Women and Industrial Flight from the U.S. Women have suffered most from the relocation of American industries to Asia or Mexico.
One of the reasons is because most of the American jobs moved to third world countries are the lower paying jobs or labor-intensive jobs and American *women* traditionally hold/have held 67% of them. Such jobs are rated at $5.99 an hour or less.
Women now hold 46% of the jobs in the U.S. according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and by the early years of the 21st century will constitute the majority of workers. According to projections, women will continue to be paid back-of-the-bus wages while men who will be a distintive minority will pocket most of the income. Yet retraining programs that are supposed to refit workers for higher paying jobs are still concentrating on men while women are being trained towards lower-paying secretarial and service jobs.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 14.1 percent of all women lived in poverty in 1994 while only 8.6 million men lived in reduced economic conditions.

86. Alice On The Broadway Stage

Alice on the Broadway stage
Devised and directed by
Eva Le Gallienne
Adaptation by Eva Le Gallienne
and Florida Friebus
Music by Richard Addinsell
with Bambi Linn as Alice
Performed in 1947 at the Majestic Theatre, the premier 'musical' theatre in New York, the cast included William Windom, Julie Harris and Eli Wallach.
British-born Eva Le Gallienne was a noted actress between 1914 and 1926. She then abandoned stardom and went on to become a great theatrical producer and was responsible for a number of significant productions.
Not only did she adapt both of Lewis Carroll's Alice stories into this play, she directed it, played the narrator AND the part of the White Queen (centre panel, lower left).
The set designs by Florida Friebus were "based on the Tenniel drawings". This was quite literally the case as the sets were painted with typical Tennielian cross hatching which even extended to the costumes which made it look as if all the characters, with the exception of Alice, were actually drawn. Note the detail on the hat.

Theatre Studies Women's Studies Biography Theater in the Americas Robert A. Schanke, series editor “A gripping good read. . . . Robert A. Schanke, much informed by his previous work on Eva Le Gallienne, conducted exhaustive research on his subject's milieu. As a result, this book also sheds new light on the biographies of dozens of other renowned women of the era— Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Alla Nazimova, Ona Munson, Romaine Brooks, and Eva Le Gallienne, to name a few.” —Felicia Hardison Londré, University of Missouri–Kansas City “Robert A. Schanke’s ‘That Furious Lesbian’: The Story of Mercedes de Acosta reclaims and celebrates a figure who is now almost virtually unknown among students and scholars of theatre history, and shows how her same-sex desire shaped her career and her literary production. Schanke’s lively and provocative narrative chronicles the story of this important figure in gay and lesbian history.”

Women in Turmoil Six Plays by Mercedes de Acosta Edited and with an Introduction by Robert A. Schanke June cloth pages, 6 x 9, 3 illus. Theatre Studies Women's Studies Theater in the Americas Robert A. Schanke, series editor In this first publication of six plays by the flamboyantly uninhibited author, poet, and playwright Mercedes de Acosta (1893–1968), theater historian Robert A. Schanke rescues these lost theatrical writings from the dusty margins of obscurity. Often autobiographical, always rife with gender struggle, and still decidedly stageworthy, Women in Turmoil: Six Plays by Mercedes de Acosta constitutes a significant find for the canon of gay and lesbian drama. In her 1960 autobiography Here Lies the Heart, de Acosta notes that as she was contemplating marriage to a man in 1920, she was "in a strange turmoil about world affairs, my own writing, suffrage, sex, and my inner spiritual development." The voice in these plays is that of a lesbian in turmoil, marginalized and ignored. Her same-sex desires and struggles for acceptance fueled her writings, and nowhere is that more evident than in the plays contained herein. The women characters struggle with unfulfilling marriages, divorce, unrequited sexual desire, suppressed identity, and a longing for recognition. Of the six plays, only the first two were ever produced.
