I did enjoy it, so I thought I'd give a little review of it here. The title is An Evening wasted With Tom Lehrer , released by Reprise Records. Basically, it's a re-mastering of the original analog recording from the live performance. It's a collection of 11 songs, interspersed with some witty comments and funny anecdotes. Tom Lehrer plays the piano and sings. The songs are:
  • Poisoning Pigeons in the Park a song about springtime, and "one of the delightful pastimes of spring".
  • Bright College Days a nostalgic song about ivy-covered professors in ivy-covered halls, supposedly sung by old grads and old undergrads ... A Christmas Carol not your traditional Christmas Carol, but one that reflects the "commercial spirit of Christmas". As the song says, "angels we have heard on high, tell us to go out and buy The Elements the names of the chemical elements set to a song by Gilbert and Sullivan. If you listen carefully, you'll hear of a chemical element called

Sillysongbook.com Tom Lehrer THENThe 1950s AND..... TOM LEHRER HAS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANT, WITTY AND INTELLIGENT SONG SATIRISTS OF THE PAST CENTURY. HIS FIRST ALBUM, "SONGS BY TOM LEHRER", WAS RECORDED FOR THE MEAGER COST OF $15 DOLLARS AND WENT ON TO SELL 370,000 COPIES UPON RELEASE ON HIS OWN RECORD LABEL IN 1953. AND ALL OF THIS HAPPENED IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT MUCH OF LEHRER'S MATERIAL WAS CONSIDERED AT THE TIME TO BE TOO CONTROVERSIAL FOR RADIO AIRPLAY.
BORN ON APRIL 9, 1928 IN NEW YORK CITY, LEHRER TOOK PIANO LESSONS AT AN EARLY AGE. LEHRER WROTE HIS FIRST SONG PARODY, "FIGHT FIERCELY HARVARD" IN 1945 AT THE AGE OF 17. AFTER MAKING HIS FIRST PUBLIC PERFORMANCE IN 1952, LEHRER HAD WRITTEN ENOUGH MATERIAL DURING HIS COLLEGE YEARS AT HAVARD TO FILL OUT AN ENTIRE LP. AFTER HIS LP, "SONGS BY TOM LEHRER" WENT ON TO SELL 370,000 COPIES, SEVERAL MAJOR RECORD LABELS EXPRESSED INTEREST. LEHRER RESISTED THE OFFERS AND SET UP HIS OWN RECORD LABEL, "LEHRER RECORDS" IN 1954. DRAFTED BY THE US ARMY IN 1955, LEHRER SPENT THE NEXT THREE YEARS IN THE MILITARY. UPON LEAVING THE ARMY IN 1957, LEHRER SIGNED WITH RCA RECORDS. IN 1959, HE RECORDED HIS SECOND LP, "MORE OF

    Introduction
I'd like to introduce now the featured artist of this page. I'm sure that you'll all agree without any hesitation that Tom Lehrer is the most brilliant creative genius that America has produced in almost 200 years, so perhaps a few words of biographical background might not be amiss. Endowed by nature with perhaps the most glorious baritone voice to be heard on an American stage since the memorable concert debut in 1835 of Millard Fillmore; endowed also with twelve incredibly agile fingers; Mr. Lehrer has had a long and varied career in the field of entertainment starting with nine years at Harvard University... where it was that he first decided to devote his life to what has since become a rather successful scientific project namely, the attempt to prolong adolescence beyond all previous limits.
Even before he came to Harvard, however, he was well known in academic circles for his masterly translation into Latin of The Wizard of Oz , which remains even today the standard Latin version of that work. A few years ago he was inducted... forcibly... into the United States Army and spent most of his indenture in Washington as sort of Army liaison to the Office of Naval Contemplation. About his service record he is justifiably modest, but it is known that in a short time he rose to the rank of brigadier general. However, before he could acquire a tenure, he was discharged, and owing to nepotism and intrigue, he emerged with only the rank of specialist 3rd class, which was roughly equivalent to the rank of corporal without portfolio.

Tom Lehrer could have been one of the musical giants of the '60s. He did most of his song writing in the 1950's and 60's, a time period Scheurer dubs the "new folk revival" , and like other musicians of the day, Lehrer often had a message he wanted to bring to his audiences. In the mold of a political folk musician, his music was shunned by mass media; and a song of his was even once reprinted in Sing Out! magazine, a publication that a few years later would be one of the first to spread the songs of Bob Dylan . But quite unlike contemporaries such as Dylan and Phil Ochs, who rose to fame on the wings of the New Left, Lehrer's song writing career was stifled by the changes of that era.
    The Man
Lehrer grew up around music. He was born in 1928, and began taking classical piano lessons 8 years later. His personal preference, however, was for the popular music of the day. His parents graciously allowed him to change to a piano teacher who was willing to indulge his desire for show tunes. In future years, Lehrer's songs would draw heavily from this early exposure. "Having a popular music teacher worked out very well for me. I began writing tunes when I was seven or eight. But I was in college when I began writing parodies of popular songs," recalled Lehrer in an article in American Scholar . His later satirical songs evolved from these simple parodies. After graduating from Harvard with a B.A. in mathematics at the early age of 18 ("Everyone in college was young then because ... everyone who was not young was in the army."
