"I Want To Be Peter Lorre"
Tom Smith P eter Lorre, born Laszlo (Ladislav) Loewenstein in a small town about 150 miles northeast of Vienna in Austria-Hungary, grew up in Vienna. To satisfy his father, he was an unhappy bank clerk before beginning his acting career. Dispite his father's disapproval, Lorre was drawn to the stages of Breslau, Zurich, Vienna, and finally Berlin, to which he moved at the age of 21. It was on the stage in the German capital that Lorre drew the praise and attention of German playwright Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956). After years of relative dramatic obscurity, Lorre finally made it big with his masterful role as the psychopathic child molester/murderer in Fritz Lang's first sound film in 1931, the still enjoyable "M." (See photo below.) After that, and following Lorre's departure from Germany in 1933, his bulging eyes, round face, and nasal voice became familiar to millions of moviegoers in a film career that spanned 33 years and ranged from classics like the two great film noir works "The Maltese Falcon" (1941) and "Casablanca" (1942), or Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954) to the respectable if bizarre "Mr. Moto" series (1937-1939), in which the Austrian Lorre played a Japanese detective modeled after the successful Chinese film detective, Charlie Chan. For a short time during his early years in Hollywood, Lorre shared a room with fellow Austrian

Interested in the theater from early on, Lorre acted on various stages in Breslau, Zurich and Vienna before coming to Berlin in 1929 when Bertolt Brecht Pioniere in Ingolstadt. Performances in Dantons Tod and followed. 1931 proved to be the year of Lorre's breakthrough. Playing Gala Gay in Brecht's own production of Mann ist Mann at night, Lorre would stand in front of the cameras of Fritz Lang during the day in the role of the child murderer Hans Beckert in the director's first sound feature, M. The success of the film turned Lorre into an international film star; after M he appeared in eight more German films, often in smaller comical roles. In 1933, Lorre emigrated via the much-traveled route first to Vienna, then Paris, then London, before reaching the US through a contract with Columbia Pictures. Known in the United States primarily for his performances as the child murderer in M and as the anarchist in Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), Lorre was typecast from the beginning of his US career as a menacing and enigmatic presence, often as a sexual threat or outsider. His most successful period was at Warner Bros. where he appeared next to Humphey Bogart and Sidney Greenstreet in numerous films of the 1940s, most notably
