    Introduction
First to clear up some common misconceptions: THX 1138 is NOT a stereo system, nor is it a movie theater or a company. It is a movie. If you haven't heard of it, I'm not surprised, because it was never very popular. It didn't even make it's money back for the first theatrical release, although it did when rereleased after Star Wars' success, and it is rare to find a store that carries it. If you really want it, Blockbuster Video will special order it, which is relatively inexpensive, and I highly recommend it.

    • THX 1138 was based on a student film Lucas made while attending USC.

Based on the classic story of a young man’s battle with the forces of evil, GeorgeLucas’s 1977 film STAR WARS introduced a modern myth to a new generation
    http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database/lucas_g.html
"I’ve always tried to be aware of what I say in my films, because all of us who make motion pictures are teachers teachers with very loud voices." B Lucas spent the next four years hard at work on the first in a series of science fiction movies. STAR WARS (1977) was one of the first movies to take advantage of the advances in special-effects technologies. The movie created an entertaining fantasy world where important moral and ethical decisions were constantly intertwined with everyday life. Speaking of STAR WARS, Lucas said, "There was no modern mythology to give kids a sense of values, to give them a strong mythological fantasy life. Westerns were the last of that genre for Americans. Nothing was being done for young people with real psychological underpinnings." In the writing of anthropologist Joseph Campbell, Lucas had learned about the myths that pervade many disparate cultures, and it is this mythology that gives Lucas’s space age epic its timeless resonance. Both of the sequels and the one prequel continued in the same vein and with equally successful. In the late 1970s Lucas formed the production company, Lucas Films Ltd. In Northern California, Lucas’s 2,700-acre state-of-the art production center and "think tank," Skywalker Ranch, is home to the empire. There, Lucas presides over his vast entertainment company, which now includes THX, Skywalker Sound, and Industrial Light and Magic. In many ways, Skywalker Ranch is the beating heart of the entertainment industry. Constantly at work developing new and higher-quality production methods, Lucas Films Ltd. has a significant influence on many of the most successful contemporary films.

By Jim Paul May 18, 1999 I n August 1976, George Lucas was exhausted and desperate. He had been in London, directing the actors in "Star Wars," a film he had every reason to believe would fail. The usual turmoil and sheer labor of the set had been made worse by the lordly British studio unions, who quit promptly at 5:30 for tea, and by the money people back in Burbank, Calif., who in the end pulled the fiscal plug on the filming. At the end of 16 weeks of shooting, Fox gave Lucas three days to finish two weeks of work, a cost-saving move that appears at least ironic now that "Star Wars" and its succeeding films have gone on to gross billions. At the time Lucas had to hire triple crews and divide the stage into three sets, on each of which he directed the action for the final three days. "I cared about every single detail," he recalled (including the duct-taping of Princess Leia's breasts "No jiggling in the Empire," noted Carrie Fisher). By the end of shooting Lucas was pale, ill, ready to drop.
