A Book About Paul Is In The Works! Click Here For Details "He has been written intact into plays, television shows and movie scripts and has wide popular appeal. The young, the old, the left, the right, the naive, the sophisticated all like him. When he isn't on stage - and few comedians are ever off it, Lynde is a compelling combination of honesty, warmth, sentimentality, intelligence and wit." Publicity statement, 1971 Paul Lynde's life as an entertainer was unique because his greatest claim to fame was as a game show panelist a job that usually marks a celebrity career in decline. As the center of the original Hollywood Squares , the comedic actor earned a hefty paycheck and two Emmy Awards and exploited his popularity as the star of two sitcoms and a handful of variety specials and as a guest on scores of other television shows. Despite being dismissed by some (at Entertainment Weekly, thank you very much) as merely the "Best Confirmed Bachelor" in television history, Mr. Lynde achieved success in arenas beyond the idiot box. Over the course of three decades, he was a comedy writer, a nightclub performer, a Broadway actor and director, a recording artist, a commercial pitchman, a supporting actor in films, a voice actor on cartoons, and a headliner on the summer stock circuit. Perhaps his best role the one for which he seems destined to be most remembered is the gay icon who made the "world a safer place for sissies" as

PAUL LYNDE
Paul Lynde began his career as a stand-up comic, basing his character on a hay-kicker type from his hometown of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. Supper club work ultimately led to Broadway's "New Faces of 1952", in which Lynde continued to portray a man of painful naiveté and merciless good humor. Today, the Lynde Trademarks, the gleaming smile and the waggle of the head, have established him as a top television personality. One of Lynde's television roles is the smart-alecky warlock Uncle Arthur in Screen Gems' "Bewitched". At Northwestern University, Lynde's goal was to become a serious actor, but when he tried out for the role of Cyrano he was so funny he had to finish his audition in the drama professor's office. After graduation, he took off for Manhattan and an acting career. Three years in New York finally brought him his smash role of the father in "Bye, Bye Birdie". Lynde came to Hollywood in 1963 where he has appeared in TV shows from daytime's "Hollywood Squares" to prime time's "Kraft Music Hall", "I Dream Of Jeannie", "The Flying Nun", and the Jackie Gleason, Jonathan Winters and Dean Martin shows. • Contact date: 1970s
  • Place: Hollywood Blvd., LA
  • Nature of Brush: "I'll take the angry motorist to block."
I am reluctant to write about this brush because I do not think it is nice to speak ill of the dead. The setting is a crowded Hollywood blvd. in the 1970's. I was driving down the blvd. traffic was heavy we were not able to go anywhere in a hurry. I hear this person yelling and cursing at the traffic several cars behind me. The voice sounded familiar. I turned and looked the voice was as I expected, Paul Lynde in a simply gorgeous convertable cursing everybody out. Four letter words flying and having a hissy fit. He seemed to lose his sense of humor. Oh well. So much for celebrities in traffic. Back to the Celebs Top Page All Brushes

PAUL LYNDE (Uncle Arthur)
Broadway, film, and television audiences began their love Affair with Paul Lynde at the Number One Fifth Avenue, where he received his first break: He was a stand-up comedian. Then came Leonard Sillman's New Faces Of 1952 on Broadway (which also launched the careers of Lynde's Bewitched costars Alice Pearce and Alice Ghostley, as well as Eartha Kitt, Carol Lawrence, and others).A two-year TV run on The Ferry Come Show followed, as did Broadway and film versions of Bye Bye Birdie (1963), which featured Lynde's rousing rendition of the tune Kids
Before his untimely death from a heart attack in January 1982, Paul appeared in summer stock stage productions of The Impossible Years, Don't Drink the Water, and Plaza Suite . He was in the 1954 movie version of New Faces (with Alice Ghostley), and in the films Send Me No Flowers (1964) and Rabbit Test
Besides bewitching the TV world as Uncle Arthur, Lynde graced the small screen on The Dean Martin Show, The Kraft Music Hall, The Donny and Marie Show, and daytime and primetime editions of the popular game show Hollywood Squares , where for years he occupied the center square (many times coguesting with Elizabeth Montgomery).

Paul Lynde Peter Marshall: Paul, can you get an elephant drunk?
Paul Lynde: Yes, but he still won't go up to your apartment. Paul Lynde didn't just say dirty things on The Hollywood Squares , he said kinky things. And bitchy things. In the real world he'd be the kind of person you'd invite to a party full of boring people, just because you knew he'd say something outrageous and liven things up.
Lynde was born in July 1926 in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He established himself in stage productions like New Faces and Bye Bye Birdie (a memorable part he re-created on film), and in roles in such movies as The Glass Bottom Boat, Send Me No Flowers, and as an Indian chief in The Villain, a Kirk Douglas 1979 experiment in comedy. On television he appeared in The Red Buttons Show The Perry Como Show, The Paul Lynde Show, and Temperature's Rising, and made memorable guest shots on shows like I Dream of Jeannie and The Munsters. But on television he'll always be remembered for two things: the practical-joking wiseacre warlock, Uncle Arthur, on Bewitched...

I. Who is Paul Lynde, to me? I think every outcast child who wasn't one of those sports kids that all the daddies wanted wished for a funny dad like the one Paul Lynde was in Bye Bye Birdie. Man, it would sure be cool, if Paul Lynde had been my dad (no offense meant to my real life dad, Conrad Bain), plus he'd have died when I was only 11, leaving me free and clear of responsibility and grades.
II. Who is Paul Lynde, to me? I was a child of television. Sure was. I make no bones about it. And I don't declare whether it was wrong or right. Here I am now, happy (well...), healthy (actually there's this small bump on the skin of my...). Anyway, here I am. I guess my memory stretches back to childhood. I blacked out a lot of it, though. You know, the beatings (kidding), the beratings (not kidding). The lectures that went on for EVER about how I wasn't doing good enough. But alas, the lectures couldn't go on forever, Dad but TV would. I remember watching the Hollywood Squares and hoping that people would pick Paul in the center square, and when they didn't I found it maddening. I mean

B iography: Paul Lynde relates that Paul's big break came in 1950. He won a stand-up comedy contest that led to club dates and a role on Broadway in New Faces of 1952, where he performed his now-famous "Trip of the Month Club" monologue. After that, he got spots on variety shows like The Jerry Lewis Show; he also did radio work and summer stock theater. But it would take another eight years before he got a big role again. In 1960, he won the role of Harry MacAfee in Bye Bye Birdie . The show became a smash hit on Broadway, and Paul then reprised the role in the film three years later. Finally, he was a bona fide comic star. He passed away on January 10, 1982.

by Billy Ingram Paul Lynde had a strong career in television all throughout the Sixties and Seventies, appearing in a handful of memorable Bewitched episodes as a semi-regular (Uncle Arthur), was the de-facto star of the long-running daytime game show 'Hollywood Squares' and had a one-year run as the star of The Paul Lynde Show in 1972. Paul Lynde started on Broadway and in the movies, his big successes were 'Bye, Bye Birdie' (both play and film) and 'Under The Yum Yum Tree'. He became a popular guest star on sitcoms in the early-sixties, landing a reoccurring role on the hit show 'Bewitched' in 1965. Lynde's career almost hit the skids at that point. He was a BIG drinker and one evening in 1965, a young actor Paul Lynde was partying with in San Francisco fell from the comedian's hotel room to his death eight floors below. The story was hushed up in the press.
