English 511: Shakespeare and Marlowe Seminar
Summer 1999 Prof. Norman Boyer TTh 6:00-8:50
office: N427 Room E228
phone (773) 298-3233 office hrs: by appointment
e-mail: boyer@sxu.edu The seminar will explore connections between Shakespeare's early work and the meteoric career of Christopher Marlowe. Born in the same year as Shakespeare, Marlowe was the preeminent figure in the Elizabethan theater by his mid-twenties, and was murdered under still mysterious circumstances before he was thirty. We will read most of Marlowe's work, as well as Kyd's Spanish Tragedy and Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus The Merchant of Venice Henry VI part 2, Venus and Adonis , and Hamlet . The interaction between Marlowe and Shakespeare will allow us to examine the development of the Elizabethan stage, its functions in early modern culture, theatrical collaboration, the construction of masculinity, homoeroticism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, racism, sedition, and the aesthetics of violence. Seminar members will be expected to participate in all discussions, contribute several oral and written assignments, and submit a substantial seminar paper of 15-20 pages. Readings:

Online Inquest into the reported murder of Christopher Marlowe
reprinted from Marlovian newsletter, 1996
The following is a transcript of an online discussion on 30 May, 1996 with several California coroners (identified as ROEBEDO), and the editor of the Marlovian, David More, and then-assistant editor Kelley Burleigh (SIMPLMND).
ROEBEDO: Hello, Marlovian. We have our Chief Medical Examiner, and 4 Deputy Coroners. MARLOVIAN : Great! Keyboards enough to go round? ROEBEDO: Only l, but 4 eager minds. MARLOVIAN : Rich G. from Jefferson County Illinois wanted to be here tonight but couldn't. Is Dr. Frank among you? ROEBEDO: Absolutely! MARLOVIAN : As I recall, last year, we agreed that if the Marlowe case were to be examined in 1996, it would probably be reopened, due to the many anomalies of the case. Shall we? ROEBEDO: Yes...should be reopened. SIMPLMND: Let's go for it! MARLOVIAN: Is everyone still fresh on the details of the case? ROEBEDO: yes, but general update. We have a couple of new participants. MARLOVIAN: Dispute over the supper bill, flesh wound on Ingrams forehead, two inch deep wound above (supra) .the eye of Marlowe. Instant death.

News in Brief
Foundations for the future
A vision for the future has become reality with the completion of the first new building on the University's major new science and technology site, West Cambridge. The William H Gates Building is home to the University's Computer Laboratory and celebrated its official opening at the beginning of May. The West Cambridge scheme is part of the University's overall strategy for providing modern research and teaching facilities in the 21st century and the opening of this first building marks a significant step in its 10-year development. Professor Sir Maurice Wilkes whose research in the 1940s underpins modern computer science, officially opened the building. The ceremony took place in the presence of the Financial Secretary of the Treasury, The Rt Hon Paul Boateng MP. "This is an historic moment in the history of the University of Cambridge," said Vice Chancellor Professor Sir Alec Broers. "As well as creating opportunities for scientific advancement, essential for the University to maintain its position as one of the world's top academic institutions, the development is further stimulating commercial research opportunities and enhances Cambridge's position as a major centre for technological research and development.

West World
Searching for the heart of Little Rock's booming western community.
By Jan Cottingham

June 25, 1999 n To people who move to Little Rock from out of state, west Little Rock is just another part of the city. To some of them, it is the city. Old-timers, though, tend to view the development west of Interstate 430 as another world strange, almost foreign, definitely bigger, newer and shinier. The Arkansas Times looks at West World and what distinguishes it its houses, stores and businesses, churches, demographics (read "people"), traffic, reasons for being and future. Where do all the people who live there come from? Who are they? Why are they here? We interviewed city planners, real estate agents, developers, home builders, business owners, school officials, city and state officials and residents long time and recently arrived. The perception of west Little Rock as somehow apart from the rest of the city manifests itself in interesting ways. Asked what she thinks of the area, one long-time Little Rockian sniffed: "Do any old Little Rock families live there?" (The answer is yes, some do.)

    June Marlowe
    "Miss Crabtree"
(Nov 6, 1903 - 1983) June Marlowe was much more than the beloved "Miss Crabtree." She was a fashion model, a featured star in silent films,a film and radio personality in Germany, an author two children's books, an expert horsewoman, and once chosen "One of the twelve most beautiful women in America." Spotted in a department store by director Bob McGowan, June had to be coaxed into the Our Gang comedies. Just like Miss Crabtree, she was polite and assured, but shy. Hal Roach suggested a blonde wig to match Jackie Cooper's light colored hair, and the dramatically transformed appearance produced "Miss Crabtree." June Marlowe was loved by the kids off the set as much as Miss Crabtree was loved on the set. Jackie Cooper had a big crush on her in the films as well as in real life. Said Dorothy DeBorba: "June Marlowe, now there was a lady. She was such a very kind, sincere person. We were never treated like children by her. She was very sweet." June wed in 1933 and remained happily married for 49 years. Settled in San Diego, she enjoyed gardening, animals, travel, and charities. She lived well, but never lost her simplicity. In the 1960's when the Little Rascals became popular again on television, she was asked to write some children's stories. She wrote two, "Beesy" and "Furry," but Parkinson's disease prevented her from further writing. She moved to Los Angeles but continued to travel back home to Minnesota whenever her health permitted. She lived to the age of 80, passing away in 1984 at St Joseph's Hospital in Burbank, California.

Films show three faces of Marlowe
The Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe is to be the subject of three new films, writes Richard Brooks. Marlowe killed in Deptford, London, aged 29, will be shown as a spy, a ladies man and a homosexual. The films are inspired by the award winning 1998 Shakespeare In Love , written by Tom Stoppard, in which Rupert Everett played Marlowe. For many he outshone Joseph Fiennes as Shakespeare. Marlowe, who was killed in 1593, is best known for plays such as Dr. Faustus, The Jew of Malta and Tamburlaine. Shooting starts first on a film noir showing Marlowe as a spy. Its script is by Frank Cottrell Boyce who wrote Welcome to Sarajevo. Andy Patterson the producer, believes Marlowe was recruited to spy on potential enemies of the state but became a double agent. The film of the philandering Marlowe will be directed by John Maybury, who three years ago made Love is the Devil , about artist Francis Bacon. The producer Tony Miller said it will "question whether Shakespeare did write Shakespeare."

roadband to business: it's the next logical step for the cable TV industry. In fact, it's a must-do, unless cable TV MSOs intend to surrender this market to telco-delivered DSL. But is the fight worth it? That's a good question. After all, breaking into the business market will force MSOs to leave their residential comfort zones. Such a move won't be cheap, simply because the drops aren't in place. In fact, in some ways it will seem-and cost-like "starting over" for some MSOs; at least where establishing networks is concerned. So what's the turf worth? "Well, if you consider that there are about 11,000 cable TV systems, and there's one potential $2,000-a-month circuit in each one of them-and that's very, very, very conservative-then what you get is $22 million a month," says Doug Marlowe. He's executive vice president of Dark Fiber Solutions, a company that sells broadband access to business.
