New Leadership, New Faces, Or A New Direction? Saturday 18 January 2003 INTRODUCTION January 17th is an important date in history. On this date in 1926, George Burns married Gracie Allen. In 1946, the United Nations Security Council held its first meeting. In 1966, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., launched his campaign for open housing in Chicago. Today we begin a weekend of celebration around his life and work. Dr. King wrote a book entitled, "Where Do We Go From Here, Chaos or Community?" I'm borrowing from him when I say: WHERE DO DEMOCRATS GO FROM HERE? NEW LEADERSHIP, NEW FACES, OR A NEW DIRECTION? WHERE ARE DEMOCRATS TODAY? On Tuesday, November 5, 2002, Democrats lost and Republicans won. Both deserved what they got! President Bush risked his political capital by campaigning strongly in swing races, and it paid high dividends. Democrats were divided on central issues, and were ineffective in offering an alternative and coherent vision to the Bush and Republican agenda. Now there is a debate within the Democratic Party over what to do. How do we reconcile the conservative/moderate wing and the liberal wing of the Democratic Party? What should our message be? Should we have more strongly supported the President on taxes or more strongly opposed him? Should we have more aggressively voted for the Iraq resolution or more aggressively been against it?

Jackson, Jr. began service in the United States House of Representatives on December 12, 1995, as he was sworn in as a member of the 104th Congress, the 91st African American ever elected to Congress. Representative Jackson currently sits on the House Appropriations Committee, serving on the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education as well as the Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, Export Financing, and Related Programs. Prior to his congressional service, Representative Jackson served as the National Field Director of the National Rainbow Coalition. In this role, he instituted a national nonpartisan program that successfully registered millions of new voters. He also created a voter education program to teach citizens the importance of participating in the political process, including how to use technology to win elections and more effectively participate in politics. Having been born in the midst of the voting rights struggle on March 11, 1965, Representative Jackson spent his twenty-first birthday in a jail cell in Washington, D.C. for taking part in a protest against apartheid at the South African Embassy. He also demonstrated weekly in front of the South African Consulate in Chicago. Representative Jackson had the privilege of sharing the stage with Mr. Nelson Mandela during his historic speech to the world following a 27-year imprisonment in Cape Town.

JESSE L. NUSBAUM PAPERS, 1921-1958 National Park Service History Collection RG 5 INVENTORY Introduction This inventory covers the papers of Jesse Nusbaum, NPS archeologist. The largest part consists of correspondence, however more of the correspondence is outgoing and the incoming is not necessarily kept with its reply. This correspondence deals with the enforcement of the Antiquities Act, archeological topics, pipeline archeology, park areas especially Mesa Verde National Park, and NPS administrative matters. Most of the correspondence dates from 1946-1958, however copies of and actual correspondence from the 1920's and 1930's are occasionally included. Articles, clippings, periodicals, a few photos, and notes make up the rest of the material. This dates from the 1950's with a few earlier clippings. It is largely due to Nusbaum's efforts that the NPS is so closely tied to Southwest archeology. A. Provenance These papers were given by Mrs. Jesse L. Nusbaum (Rosemary). They were generated and collected by her husband during his service as NPS archeologist.
