NOMINATED BY: The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, founder and president, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Confronting the issues of slavery and race has been fundamental in America's development. A successful outcome was achieved only through dedication and sacrifice. The first stage was the abolition of slavery, the source of great shame. The next step was an end to legal segregation, and then the guarantee to all Americans of the right to vote. The final stage was equal access to capital for everyone. Dr. King led the 20th century drive to transform American culture. He fought to end segregation by changing the law. If Dr. King had not succeeded and Congress had not passed the 1965 Voting Rights Act, we would not have the multiracial, multicultural society we have today. Dr. King dispelled the notion that just because you were black, you could not lead. The healer, the builder of bridges, the one who changed the laws was Dr. King. As a leader he had no peer. The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, founder and president, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition

    ADVERTISEMENTS
Issue date: March 19, 2000 In this article:
More to him than just acting
by Jeffrey Zazlow Martin, 31 and single, notices his growing appeal "I get approached by many different kinds of women" but he still sees himself as a timid boy from Buffalo. The son of a truck-driver dad and career-counselor mom, he moved there at age 7 from a small town in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. "It was really difficult at first. I was a shy kid with a thick accent. I was afraid to speak. There was forced busing in Buffalo, and people were vehemently opposed to it. It was scary as a kid to go into a community that didn't want you there. And they were very vocal about it." In this role, Martin's race is incidental. He likes that. He thinks the show keeps getting more popular because it is story-driven the police and court cases are the focal points not character-driven. "The stories are so compelling. That's more important than who's in the cast."

Reno USMA Class of 1846 At Antietam Creek on September 17, 1862, the IX Corps crossed the Burnside Bridge under the rallying cry of “Remember Reno”. On this bloodiest day in American history, the men of the IX corps chose to remember their beloved commander who had lost his life leading his men just three days earlier at the Battle of South Mountain. Born on April 20, 1823 in Wheeling, Virginia (West Virginia), Jesse Lee Reno was the third oldest of eight children born to Lewis and Rebecca Reno. The spelling of “Reno’ is an anglisized version of the French surname “Reynaud”. Jesse’s ancesters, having arrived in America in 1770, shortly changed the name to the phonetically simple ‘Reno”. Jesse’s family moved to Franklin, Pennsylvania in 1830 where Jesse attended school and lived out his formulative years. An area history describes Jesse as a boy
