Nasdaq Going Online?
07:36 AM Jul. 28, 1999 PT Nasdaq is reportedly contemplating a restructuring that would lead to an online trading platform. Nasdaq, founded in 1971, has enjoyed a higher profile in recent years largely because of the profusion of technology stocks listed on the system and is second only to the New York Stock Exchange among US trading systems.

The Financial Times said Wednesday that the plan was intended to counter the threat posed to establish exchanges by small-scale electronic communications networks (ECNs) and to reinforce Nasdaq's relationships with dealer-brokers and technology companies. It said talks with some of the companies listed on Nasdaq technology titan Microsoft among them were already underway. The Financial Times said the National Association of Securities Dealers, which runs Nasdaq, would meet in New York Thursday to discuss the Internet trading plan. Nasdaq may opt to raise funds by selling shares privately to its 5,500 dealer-brokers and listed companies rather than via an IPO, the paper said.

The Monday version is a feature column about an interesting person, place or event in St. Paul or its surrounding suburbs. On Friday, the column is a collection of anecdotes and observations from the East Metro area. Around St. Paul: May Township couple lights up holidays Joe Kimball, Star Tribune Published December 22, 1997 Driving by, you can't fully appreciate the Christmas decorations on Dennis and Bonnie Thode's farm in northern Washington County. Sure, it's impressive from the road. More than 300,000 lights on 7 acres make quite a sight. But to get the full impact, you need to get out and wander through the glowing trees and decorations. See the animals, skate on the pond. Maybe roast marshmallows or hot dogs at the bonfire. The Thodes welcome visitors to their interactive winter wonderland in May Township, about 2 miles west of Marine on St. Croix. With holiday music playing on the outdoor speakers, Bonnie greets folks at the driveway, with a candy cane for the kids. She directs them to the barn, where Dennis shows off his menagerie the reindeer, two camels, the water buffalo and the wallaby. For more than 30 years, the Thodes have been illuminating their stretch of 170th Street N. They stopped for a while in the '70s remember the energy crisis? One year they went on a cruise. But otherwise, their display has been a fixture in this rural area.

Midway through our conversation about Fresh Air Fiend , Paul Theroux reminds me that during the 15 years in which he wrote the 49 travel essays and articles collected here, he also wrote a major book on China (Riding the Iron Rooster), three additional travel books, a controversial memoir about his friendship with V.S. Naipaul (In Sir Vidia's Shadow), and more than a handful of novels (including My Secret History, Millroy the Magician, and Kowloon Tong). Something like a dozen books in all. "It's not that I was writing these pieces with my left hand," Theroux says, "but I was doing other things at the same time. These pieces illuminate those books, and those books derive somewhat from the experiences recorded here. There's a certain synchronicity in writing travel pieces and also living my life as a novelist and a travel writer." This is disheartening. You'd expect perhaps even hope that there'd be a significant decline in quality in these occasional pieces, written over the years for publications as varied as Outside magazine, The New York Times, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. And, no doubt, readers will have their favorites and less favorites among them. But in each of the pieces collected in

86. Vatican Rag
While the Senate continues wrestling with his fate, President Clinton will be in St. Louis Tuesday to greet Pope John paul II, who is fresh from a visit to Mexico where he nudged his straying flock back into the Catholic herd. Clinton won't be going to confession, but the president can still expect to get an earful. The Vatican is unhappy with the Clinton administration for several reasons the air strikes in Iraq, the continuing embargo against Cuba, and what is perceived as a tepid interest in helping to relieve poverty around the world. The pontiff may also raise the issues of abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment three other areas where, in his view, the American record is spotty. Wired News

"Subtle energy" is also referred to as chi, prana, Holy Spirit, manna, ether, or-gone, bio-magnetism and zero-point, among many other names in our current vocabulary. Regardless of the label, it appears to contribute to many phenomena not currently explained by conventional science. "Subtle energy" refers to the medium through which consciousness acts on the realm of matter and energy. According to a National Institutes of Health study, at least 52 terms are used for "subtle energy": chi, prana, holy spirit, manna, ether, orgone, biomagnetism and zeropoint, among many others in our current vocabulary. Regardless of the label, it appears to contribute to many phenomena not currently explained by conventional science: telekinesis, remote sensing, telepathy, gut or heartbased intuition, healing by prayer or other psychic means, biocommunication between species, etc. Since these phenomena have tangible effects that can be documented but not explained by the known principles of the electromagnetic (E/M) field of matter/energy, they require that we hypothesize another force through which conscious intent acts on the affected objects, senses and cells. Some researchers believe a fuzzy part of the electromagnetic spectrum, beyond gamma rays, constitutes this force but that it has not yet been discovered due to the lack of refined instrumentation. Just as the harnessing of radio waves and Xrays had to await the development of new technologies, say these researchers, the development of more advanced machines will enable humans to make use of this fuzzy E/M field.

His powerhouse drumming suited this heavy rock act's loud aggressive sound which was liberally laced with echoed feedback guitar. The first album is the best of the two, but is frankly over-rated and neither are good enough to justify the price originals sell for. The recent CD reissue containing both albums is welcome 'cos at least people that want to hear them or buy them can get them at a reasonable price now. Unless you're into heavy, rather lumbering progressive rock don't bother. The band also figured on the Vertigo Annual 1970 compilation, playing

This is the question that has preoccupied my mind for the past several weeks and most acutely in the past week or so. I was highly tempted to post that little bit of klingonese (I don't speak it! Really! It's from the STVI movie!) on my blog a little more than a week ago. According to the makers of Star Trek and Klingonese scholars worldwide, that is the klingon translation of "to be or not to be?" And today I found the answer. Tagh b'cht. I had feared this was coming for some time, and had been mentally preparing myself. Elissa and I broke up today, but on friendly terms. And I felt no pain then, and the pain is only dull now, because I have been bracing myself for at least the past week. The pain of the breakup and pain of uncertainty I had already been through. There is a Calvin and Hobbes comic where Calvin breaks his Dad's binoculars and spends the whole day before his dad gets home worrying about what the consequences will be. That's a lot like what this week has been like. And so I took the news today with a sort of mild feeling of relief, because I had already gone through the pain of the breakup a thousand times, and this brought an end to the pain of uncertainty. Elissa and I will still remain very good friends and keep things casual.

On May 18, 1952, in defiance of the authorities who refused to allow him to cross the border, Paul Robeson stood on the back of a flat bed truck on the US-Canada border and sang songs of defiance and solidarity to 40,000 people. 50 years later, on May 18, 2002 activists from both Canada and the United States, organized Here We Stand! , a free concert at the same location to commemorate the 1952 event. The issues dear to Paul Robeson - social justice, freedom, and civil rights - are as pertinent now are they were then.
