Ian McDiarmid Biography
On US television, McDiarmid has appeared in several programs that have aired on PBS' "Mystery!", including 1992's "Masonic Mysteries", directed by Danny Boyle, and 1998's "Sacrifice" and "Touching Evil". He acted in Renny Rye's adaptation of Dennis Potter's "Karaoke" and reprised his role of Oliver Morse in the follow-up "Cold Lazarus" (both aired on Bravo in 1997). In 1999, he portrayed Jaggers in a BBC/PBS production of "Great Expectations". Along with Jonathan Kent, Ian McDiarmid served as joint artistic director of the Almeida Theatre, one of the more successful and influential of London's playhouses. With many of their productions attracting big name performers such as Diana Rigg, Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche and Kevin Spacey, and others transferring to both West End and Broadway theatres, the Almeida has served to further the influence of the stage and has brought works by playwrights like Pirandello and Racine to a public who may not have experienced them otherwise. An exceptional stage actor and director, McDiarmid has performed in several productions for the theater since the mid-1980s including "The Saxon Shore", "Creditors", "Volpone", "Ivanov", and "The Jew of Malta". As a stage director, some of McDiarmid's credits include "The Possibilities", "The Rehearsal", "Hippolytus" and "A Hard Heart", all for the Almeida, and "Don Juan" at the Royal Exchange Theatre. Like many players, McDiarmid began his stage work in repertory, first with Glasgow's Citizen's Theatre, then in Manchester and later with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he acted in "Measure for Measure", "Macbeth", "Henry V" and "The Danton Affair", among others.

Ian McDiarmid Ian McDiarmid was born on April 17, 1947, in Carnoustie, Scotland.
He grew up in Dundee, Tayside. It was not a place that fostered artistic endeavour. Despite a fascination with the theatre, Ian first studied social sciences. He earned an MA at St. Andrews University , in Fife, but could not take heart in a career as a clinical psychologist. Thereafter, he worked for a year to be able to pay for acting courses at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama . There he won the gold medal in 1968. He worked in various fringe theatres in Scotland and England and then joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. In November 1979, he appeared as guest star on the television series The Professionals . He began to be cast in small, supporting roles in cinema. His first major role in the movies was as the Emperor in Return of the Jedi , in 1983.
His passion is the theatre, and he has become an established actor and director on the stage in the United Kingdom. In 1990, Ian McDiarmid and Jonathan Kent took over the Almeida Theatre in Islington as co-artistic directors. The Almeida, then an obscure fringe theatre, has since become one of the most reputed playhouses in London. Such a small venue now showcases performances by many talented actors with considerable star power. McDiarmid and Kent were awarded with Theatrical Achievement of the Year by the Evening Standard in 1998, and have been called "the capital's prime impresarios" by theatre critic Nicholas de Jongh.

Connections to the theater, films, and fans of British actor Ian McDiarmid
NEWS Dostoevsky, a touch of Columbo The Peter Falk series was allegedly based on the character of Porfiry, and the Bravo miniseries unfolds in classic "Columbo" fashion, with the crime and the criminal plainly identified up front, leaving the investigator, played superbly by Ian McDiarmid ("Sleepy Hollow," "Star Wars"), to toy with his prey (John Simm of "Never Never," "Human Traffic") like a cat cornering a mouse. Dostoyevsky's Twilight of Murder and Guilt Mr. McDiarmid, who appears fit, has said in interviews that he does not look like Porfiry, and indeed the Porfiry of Dostoyevsky's novel is stout. But Mr. McDiarmid uses his trim size, along with his smiling eyes, to create a magistrate who is menacing because he is initially at least genuinely appealing, receptive, flawed. He is the kind of judge to whom one might confess. Who will be joining the cast for Episode III?

The Man of Mystery He was Senator Palpatine in The Phantom Menace and the Emperor in Return of the Jedi . Now, in an exclusive Insider interview, Ian McDiarmid talks about bridging the gap as Supreme Chancellor Palpatine in Episodes II and III of the Star Wars saga. When Darth Vader first burst on the scene in 1977, storming into the Rebel Blockade Runner amid smoke, stormtroopers , and blaster fire, it was impossible to think of him as anything but the ultimate villain of Star Wars . It seemed there could be no soul darker, no mind more evil, no heart more cold. That was before we met the Emperor. As Darth Vader himself put it, "The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am." Sure enough, in Return of the Jedi , we learned quickly that Vader was but a pawn in his master's dark game of galactic domination. The Emperor, from the moment he first touched down on Death Star II , made it clear that it was he who was in charge all along. By the end, we saw that Vader could actually be a hero, and that the ultimate villain of the
