Year Reviewed by The Wolf Selling wigs to terrorists is a funny idea. Except not in Belfast. There is something about the IRA that puts an end to laughter. Barry McEvoy wrote the script, based on stories his father told him. He also plays Colm, who cuts hair in a mental hospital, where he meets The Scalper (Billy Connolly), a crazed Scot, who ran a toupee monopoly in Northern Ireland before losing the plot and attacking his customers. With his pal, George (Brian F O'Byrne), he uses The Scalper's contacts to take over the franchise, as a rival firm moves in and a sales battle ensues. If this was Sheffield, where The Full Monty came from, a wig war would have been the cue for slapper jokes and baldy scams, but not here. The British army is on the streets. Men in woolly masks stalk country lanes at night. Where you live and who you know matters as much as the church you attend. Colm is Catholic, George is Protestant. Not good for business. Baltimore's favourite son, Barry Levinson, directs. The soundtrack pulsates with Celtic ballads. Anna Friel, who can't keep away from chirpy, bouncy roles, plays Colm's girlfriend. It doesn't rain as heavily as in Angela's Ashes, but it pours nonetheless.

EVERLASTING PIECE, AN
If you're in Belfast in the 1980s, you aren't going to go too long without experiencing signs of the Troubles. Even if all you wish to do is sell toupees door to door. Such is the existence of Colm (Barry McEvoy) and George (Brian F. O'Byrne), two enterprising barbers who live by the business mantra of seeing the need, and filling the need. The need in Belfast at this particular time just happens to be hairpieces. more >> Critic: David Luty

QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: Two men, one Catholic, the other Protestant, team up to try to get a monopoly on selling hairpieces in Northern Ireland during the 1980s.
PLOT:
It's Belfast in the 1980s and Colm (BARRY McEVOY), a Catholic, has just started work as a barber at the local mental hospital. Along with his Protestant coworker, George (BRIAN F. O'BRYNE), Colm gives the various patients haircuts, but realizes there must be more in life for him than doing that. He gets the chance to pursue something more when he hears about a patient known as the Scalper (BILLY CONNOLLY), who once had a monopoly on the entire hairpiece business in Northern Ireland until he scalped several of his customers. Sensing a lucrative business opportunity, Colm and George convince the Scalper to give up his client list and they then set out to learn everything about selling hairpieces, much to the amusement of Colm's mother (RUTH McCABE) and girlfriend, Bronagh (ANNA FRIEL). They're eventually successful, however, in making their first sale with their new company, The Piece People, but then realize that they have competition from another business, Toupee or Not Toupee.

An Everlasting Piece
review by Zach B. Rated R Studio: Dreamworks Running Time: 103 minutes Starring Barry McEvoy, Brian F. O'Byrne, Anna Friel and Billy Connolly Written by Barry McEvoy Directed by Barry Levinson Retail Price: $26.95 Features: Cast and Filmmakers Bios, Production Notes, Theatrical Trailer Specs: 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen, English Dolby Digital 5.1, English DTS 5.1, English Dolby Surround, English Subtitles, Chapter Search (20 Chapters) Released: August 7th, 2001 You may have heard a little bit about "An Everlasting Piece". A lawsuit has been going around for a little bit as of writing this, as the filmmakers sued Dreamworks (the studio that distributed this movie) claiming that they didn't give the movie chance and didn't really support it, claiming the studio would and disapproved of some of the subject matter. A lot of it made the studio seem like a big bad guy (where have we heard this before?), and perhaps, has given some publicity in the movie. Since this movie came out and then just died in such limited release, I didn't check it out. Now you can on video and DVD, and perhaps with this release it will gain more an audience and publicity with those curios about the lawsuit. "An Everlasting Piece" follows Colm and George, two barbers at a local mental hospital, circa the 1980s in Ireland (one is Catholic while the other is a Protastant). When they are soon faced to cut the hair of "The Scalper", the two learn that he used to be the only toupee distributor in Ireland, and he became quite wealthy. So why is he called "The Scalper", why, he scalped people of course! The duo then get a hold of his clients list and become toupee salesmen who get caught up in a whole lot of things. From there, madcap comedy and all sorts of zaniness ensues.

Film Has Dade Connection Growing up in northern Ireland gave Fiona McEvoy Calhoun a special appreciation for life in the United States. Calhoun, a first-grade teacher at Dade Elementary, returned to her homeland last year and said while times have changed much remains the same. "It is a lot different but there were still guns everywhere and tanks in the street, though not as much violence," she said. "It was strange going back because it was the first time I had been back as an adult. When you've lived in the states and see what freedom is and how clean it is and then go back its unbelievable. I couldn't compare it to anything because that was all I knew before." Calhoun, who has been travelling a lot lately, spent Christmas in Washington D.C. with her family to see the opening of "An Everlasting Piece," a movie based on a screenplay written by her brother. Barry McEvoy pulled a coupe when he also wouldn't sell his work unless he could play the lead role, that of father Colm McEvoy, sister Fiona Calhoun said. "He's been kind of like a struggling actor for some time and everything he came across he didn't think was good material, so he said if he was going to come across anything he would have to write it himself," Calhoun said.

They eventually showed up as McFroy. This listing has other names I found along the way that were of interest to me. You may find a relative here. You may even find one you don't expect, that was 'just passing through Chicago' on his or her way West. The rented microfilm I used was backwards, so you may need to go backwards or forwards one Ward to find a particular person. The census is unusual in that it lists the names of those who died during a recent cholera outbreak. Since film is backwards it starts with boat and canal workers, canal drivers, (lots of 12 to 20 year olds)

Heywood C. S. 2-10 Knockbeg College 0-9 It was this goal which was to prove a constant thorn for the Knockbeg side who never managed to close the gap beyond three points. Despite the terrible conditions both sides stuck with the task and not until William Barry goaled 12 minutes from time was the result certain. Certainly Heywood looked to more likely to advance throughout but their tendency to take their eye off the target when in front could have cost them. But Knockbeg began to gain a foothold in midfield thanks to Dara McEvoy and Patrick Brennan. This possession led to scores from McEvoy and Keith Purcell to close the gap to four points at the interval, Heywood leading 1-4 to 0-3. Knockbeg took up where they had left off on the restart and points from Enright and Jamie Kavanagh left just two between the sides. But once again they eased up and were punished with points from Ross Munnelly and Patrick Brennan. Full credit to Knockbeg they kept battling and were offered a glimmer of hope as McEvoy and Donoghue found the target. But it was Heywood who finished the stronger with Donoghue (2) and Barry tacking on points.

Tinnahinch . . . . . . . .1-13, Camross . . . . . . . .1-10
SEVEN months ago or so the name of Tinnahinch was entered into the SHC draw for the first time. The amalgamation of Clonaslee and Rosenallis has already paid dividends as the combination team advanced to this year’s county final at the expense of the mighty Camross.
In the course of the championship Tinnahinch have impressed although in their quarterfinal meeting with Ballacolla their performance suggested that they had gone as far as they might this year.
However, in O’Moore Park on Saturday evening they proved their doubters mistaken as they turned in an honest, vigorous performance to emerge from the shadow of near neighbours Camross.
And this latest victory for the new combination was no fluke. Apart from a few shaky moments in the opening quarter, once they settled into the game Tinnahinch looked the sharper, more lively of the two sides.
But it must be said this was not the Camross of old. There is no doubt that they still have a talented squad of players but they seem to lack the craving of previous sides.
