Dated: August 1, 2000 Do still waters run deep for Passions' Jesse Metcalfe?
Jesse Metcalfe seems distracted. While polite and pleasant enough during his telephone interview, the fresh young actor, who plays teen her-cum-heartthrob Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald on Passions , is at a distinct loss for words – other than short answers that repeatedly grind the interviewer to a halt. Whether that is by accident or design (perhaps an attempt to perpetuate an enigmatic mystique) is anyone's guess. But in either case, Metcalfe gives the distinct impression and vibe that he is someone whose thoughts lie elsewhere – be it deep inside himself or with another person or place. Is it boredom? Requisite adolescent angst and freneticism? Only Metcalfe – if anyone – knows for sure. Born an only child in Northern California, Metcalfe and his family relocated to Connecticut when he was 5. Metcalfe's mother, Nancy, is currently studying to be a makeup artist. "She wants to come out here to L.A. to work in TV or film," Metcalfe says. While very close to his mom, Metcalfe is estranged from his father. "I haven't seen him in a long while." Like many young performers, Metcalfe says, "I had a feeling that I wanted to be an actor, and that it would eventually happen for me, even though I wasn't pursuing it."

But He's Just Getting Warmed Up
During his nearly two years as PASSIONS's beleaguered Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald, Jesse Metcalfe has survived an electrocution, a fireball and even hell. But when the actor's contract expires next summer, he'll face a different kind of heat. Will Metcalfe re-sign – or try his luck elsewhere? "It's up in the air. I'd be willing to stay for a little while," he hedges. "But I don't know how much longer." When decision time comes, the young man will be at his second career crossroads. The first occurred in 1999 during his third year of studying film direction at New York University. He decided to go to an open casting call for PASSIONS – his very first acting audition. When Metcalfe was offered a role, he opted to drop out of college. He explains that school "wasn't a place where I was learning skills that I would later build a career on." So, the rookie actor relocated to Los Angeles. "It was the start of a new chapter in my life," notes Metcalfe, who embraced the chance to become a self-sufficient adult. "Getting up every morning and going to a job, paying bills, directly or indirectly, molds you into a mature person," he observes. "I've grown and changed so much in these last two years. It's unbelievable."

Owens pierced a myth
By Larry Schwartz

ESPN.com
For most athletes, Jesse Owens' performance one spring afternoon in 1935 would be the accomplishment of a lifetime. In 45 minutes, he established three world records and tied another. Owens won four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics. But that was merely an appetizer for Owens. In one week in the summer of 1936, on the sacred soil of the Fatherland, the master athlete humiliated the master race. Owens' story is one of a high-profile sports star making a statement that transcended athletics, spilling over into the world of global politics. Berlin, on the verge of World War II, was bristling with Nazism, red-and-black swastikas flying everywhere. Brown-shirted Storm Troopers goose-stepped while Adolf Hitler postured, harangued, threatened. A montage of evil was played over the chillingly familiar Nazi anthem: "Deutschland Uber Alles." This was the background for the 1936 Olympics. When Owens finished competing, the African-American son of a sharecropper and the grandson of slaves had single-handedly crushed Hitler's myth of Aryan supremacy.

James Cleveland Owens was born in Oakville, Alabama on September 12, 1913. He was the seventh of ten children born to Henry and Emma Owens. James' family worked as sharecroppers on an Alabama farm and by the time he was seven he was expected to pick 100 pounds of cotton a day. James was afflicted with chronic bronchitis as a child and also suffered several bouts of pneumonia during the winter months. The family was too poor to afford doctors and hospitals so James had to recover on his own. When he was nine years old his parents moved to Cleveland, Ohio in search of work and James entered the public school system. On his first day at the new school one of his teachers asked him for his name and he replied J.C. The teacher misunderstood his Alabama drawl and thought he said Jesse. Jesse was his name from that day forward. Jesse excelled at track and field in both Junior High School and High School. He set Junior High world records in the high jump and the broad jump.

In the Berlin Olympics of August 2 16, 1936, Adolf Hitler refused to shake hands with an American runner named Jesse Owens, who was what we now call African-American in politically correct parlance, making headlines around the world, as Hitler's racial policies towards non-Aryans were quite well-known. I will comment on several other Jesse Owens related stories. First, I would like to clear up the story of Jesse Owen's name. His real name was James Cleveland Owens, which when he drawled (he was from the dirt-poor South) to a Northern schoolteacher, "J.C.," turned into Jesse.

Perhaps the most famous of all modern Olympics was the 1936 "Nazi Olympics," held in Berlin. Hitler tried to use the Olympic Games to demonstrate the superiority of "pure Aryans" over nations that allowed Jews, blacks and other "mongrel" races to compete on their behalf. Jesse Owens and other African-American track stars embarrassed the Fuhrer by winning most of the gold medals in the men’s track sprints and relays, defeating their German rivals easily. What is less remembered about the Nazi Olympics is the saga of two American Jewish sprinters, Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller. The 18-year-old Glickman had been a track and football star at Syracuse University, while Stoller competed for the University of Michigan. The two young men made the U. S. Olympic squad as members of the 400-yard relay team. Glickman and Stoller traveled to Germany and prepared diligently for the relay race. The day before the race, however, with little explanation, the U.S. track team coaches replaced Glickman and Stoller with two other runners, Jesse Owens and Ralph Metcalfe, both African-Americans. As I walked into the stadium, I began to get so angry. I began to get so mad. It shocked the hell out of me that this thing of forty-nine years ago could still evoke this anger… I was cussing...I was really amazed at myself, at this feeling of anger. Not about the German Nazis …that was a given. But the anger at Avery Brundage and Dean Cromwell for not allowing an eighteen-year-old kid to compete in the Olympic Games just because he was Jewish.

Saint Luke School, River Forest Ralph Metcalfe was born on May 30, 1910, in Atlanta, Georgia. His family came to Chicago when Ralph was seven years old. Ralph's father worked in the stockyards, while his mother took in sewing to help her family earn money. In 1930 Metcalfe graduated from Tilden Technical High School. Then he went on to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was captain of the university track team. Metcalfe then went to Xavier College in Louisiana. There he joined the physical education department and was the track team coach. Metcalfe was the earliest black athlete to excel in sports and return to the South to share his knowledge of track with black students. He inspired many fine athletes by his example. Many people may not know Ralph Metcalfe was an Olympian. He won the 400-medley relay race with Jesse Owens and two other Americans in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Metcalfe, Owens, and other black athletes stunned Adolph Hitler and the German Olympic team by their performances. In the previous Olympics, in Los Angeles, Metcalfe broke or tied every world record in races from 40 to 220 yards in track. Although he never won any gold medals in individual events, Metcalfe ran many track events before the 1936 Olympics. He tied Eddie Toolan's record of 9.58 seconds in the one-hundred-yard dash.

in full RALPH HAROLD METCALFE (b. May 30, 1910, Atlanta, Ga., U.S.d. Oct. 10, 1978, Chicago, Ill.), American sprinter, member of the American 4 100-meter relay team that won a gold medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. At his peak, in 1934-35, he was called "the world's fastest human"; in 1932 and 1936 he won Olympic silver medals in the 100-metre dash, losing close races to his great rivals Eddie Tolan and Jesse Owens Metcalfe was an outstanding sprinter while growing up in Chicago and as a student at Marquette University (Milwaukee, Wis.). While his starts were comparatively weak, Metcalfe had an extremely long stride and was noted for the strength of his finishes. In at least eight 100-metre dashes, he tied the world record of 10.3 seconds, and he also tied the world record of 20.6 seconds in the 200-metre dash. His 100-metre dash at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles ended in a virtual dead heat with Tolan, both men finishing in 10.38 seconds. After hours of deliberation over a photograph of the finish, the judges determined that Tolan won by about an inch. Metcalfe also won a bronze medal in the 200-metre dash at the 1932 Games. Metcalfe again finished second in the 100-metre dash at the 1936 Olympics; the victor, a tenth of a second faster, was Owens, whom Metcalfe defeated at other track meets. After his retirement following the 1936 Games, Metcalfe attended the University of Southern California (M.A., 1939) and engaged in a long political career, serving as a Chicago alderman and Democratic ward committeeman, then as a U.S. Congressman from Illinois (1971-78).
