Ralph Stanley
Ralph Stanley and His Big Band came out, all in white hats except those two young bucks, John Rigsby and Ralph II, who'd just bought them some black hats, grinning big at their daring. Ralph, who had checked out of the hospital that morning, still suffering from bronchial pneumonia to be there to honor Bill Monroe, stepped up and sang "Can't You Hear Me Calling" with Rigsby doing a singing great tenor; he apologized for singing it in a lower key. Hey, Ralph can sing in any key he wants as far as I'm concerned, anytime! They did "Letter From My Darling," with II doing a fine lead job; he's developing that Carter quaver in his voice; they received a standing ovation.

Bluegrass Unlimited
Bill Monroe (1911 - 1996)
Bill Monroe "the Father of Bluegrass" lives on. But Bill Monroe, the man, has spent his last days on earth. He died on September 9, 1996, in Springfield, Tenn., at the of 84, four days short of his 85th birthday. Much has already been written about this remarkable individual. More will be in the days and years ahead. An artistic giant, his personal creation of a distinctive genre stands as an unprecedented accomplishment in the history of American popular music. William Smith Monroe was born on September 13, 1911, on Jerusalem Ridge near the little town of Rosine, in the hills of Ohio County, Ky. He was the youngest of eight children of James Buchanan Monroe (1857- 1928) and Malissa Vandiver Monroe (1870-1921). His father, a farmer who raised crops, mined coal, and cut timber on his land, was a fine dancer; his mother played accordion, harmonica, and fiddle. At age 10, Bill took up the mandolin. (His older, musically-inclined siblings had already laid claim to the more desired fiddle and guitar.) He got pointers on the instrument from Hubert Stringfield, who farmed on the Monroe land. Later Bill evolved his own approach, combining melody ideas from hoedown fiddling with blues guitar picking a formidable chorded rhythm chop. Bill was occasionally lorded over by his siblings. Having poor vision and crossed eyes, he was often teased by strangers and unable to participate in many childhood activities. His vision was later corrected, but a proud desire to prove his worth - and a "lonesome" feeling that was to so characterize bluegrass - burned within him.

Like this page? Send it to a friend! Bill Monroe, The Father of Bluegrass, is regarded by many as the only person who could claim to have invented an entire style of music. He always trod his own musical path, never bowing to commercial pressure, and his contribution to country music has been inestimable. A kind of rural mountain jazz, of his beloved bluegrass, he once said, 'It's got a hard drive to it. It's Scotch bagpipes and old-time fiddlin' It's Methodist and holiness and Baptist. It's blues and jazz and it has a high, lonesome sound, It's plain music that tells a good story. It's played from my heart to your heart, and it will touch you.' Taking a typically uncompromising stance, Bill left Columbia in 1949, because he objected to them signing the Stanley Brothers, a rival bluegrass group. He joined Decca Records (later MCA), with whom he remained for the rest of his life. The early 1950s turned out to be a golden era for Monroe and his music. He wrote and recorded such classics as Footprints In The Snow, Kentucky Waltz, Uncle Pen, Roanoke, Scotland, Walking In Jerusalem and I'm Working On A Building. A young Elvis Presley chose to sing a cover of Blue Moon Of Kentucky when he auditioned for the Grand Ole Opry in 1954 and recorded the song for his first Sun Records single. Presley later apologised to Mr. Monroe for changing the arrangement of his song.

A Tribute to Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys
In 1938, Bill Monroe and his brother Charlie broke up their successful duet act, the Monroe Brothers. That same year Bill formed his own band, the Blue Grass Boys. In 1939 he joined the Grand Ole Opry and was a member until his death in 1996. For more than half a century, being a Blue Grass Boy was the crowning achievement of many musicians' careers; for others, a stepping stone to establishing their own bands. This site is intended as a tribute to all the musicians who contributed to the creation of Bill Monroe's music, as well as an information resource for research. The musicians are divided into several groups: Regular: Musicians who were hired as regular members of the band on an ongoing basis. You can view the list of regular Blue Grass Boys sorted any of several ways: Fill-in: Musicians who served as temporary Blue Grass Boys, for a single show or a short period. Studio: Studio musicians who appeared on recordings only.

Would you like to see Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music, honored by a commemorative United States Postage Stamp? If you would, the time to act is NOW, and all you have to do is to write and mail a letter. Each year, the United States Postal Service considers the issuance of approximately 25 commemorative postage stamps. Under its guidelines, which you can read here , the honoree must have been deceased for at least 10 years, which in Bill Monroe's case will be September 9, 2006. The 95th anniversary of his birth, September 13, 2006, which is only 4 days later, would be a logical date for the issuance of the stamp. The guidelines further recommend that the process be started 3 years before the issuance year, which is 2003. The first step is for a citizens' committee to select, and narrow down to approximately 25, the worthy nominees for each year. This they do by considering letters, cards, petitions, etc., sent to them by the public at large. After that, the committee considers art work and other details for the stamp. Because Bill Monroe's music is appreciated worldwide, nominations from outside the USA would be very appropriate. If you would like to participate in this effort on behalf of a great American musical genius, write your letter to: Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee
