Bluegrass Unlimited Bill Monroe (1911 - 1996) Bill Monroe "the Father of Bluegrass" lives on. But Bill Monroe, the man, has spent his last days on earth. He died on September 9, 1996, in Springfield, Tenn., at the of 84, four days short of his 85th birthday. Much has already been written about this remarkable individual. More will be in the days and years ahead. An artistic giant, his personal creation of a distinctive genre stands as an unprecedented accomplishment in the history of American popular music. William Smith Monroe was born on September 13, 1911, on Jerusalem Ridge near the little town of Rosine, in the hills of Ohio County, Ky. He was the youngest of eight children of James Buchanan Monroe (1857- 1928) and Malissa Vandiver Monroe (1870-1921). His father, a farmer who raised crops, mined coal, and cut timber on his land, was a fine dancer; his mother played accordion, harmonica, and fiddle. At age 10, Bill took up the mandolin. (His older, musically-inclined siblings had already laid claim to the more desired fiddle and guitar.) He got pointers on the instrument from Hubert Stringfield, who farmed on the Monroe land. Later Bill evolved his own approach, combining melody ideas from hoedown fiddling with blues guitar picking a formidable chorded rhythm chop. Bill was occasionally lorded over by his siblings. Having poor vision and crossed eyes, he was often teased by strangers and unable to participate in many childhood activities. His vision was later corrected, but a proud desire to prove his worth - and a "lonesome" feeling that was to so characterize bluegrass - burned within him.

Monroe, Bill Bill Monroe, the legendary Country music star, has died at Nashville, Tennessee, aged 84. Monroe pioneered "bluegrass" music, named after his band the Blue Grass Boys, and achieved worldwide fame and popularity. His influence on the development of popular music has been widely noted, inspiring artists such as Elvis Presley and the Beatles. Monroe was born in Rosine, Kentucky, in 1911, the youngest of eight children. His brother Charlie was the next youngest, but still eight years older, which meant that Monroe was left out of many family activities. This gap in age, and his poor eyesight, led him to develop an introverted nature that stayed with him into adult life. He grew up playing the mandolin, and one of his early influences was a local blues guitarist, Arnold Schultz, who schooled the young Monroe in appreciation of the blues, which can be detected in many of his songs. Along with his brothers Charlie and Birch, Bill Monroe formed a band, playing on local radio barn-dance shows, and they had their first hit record in 1936 with "What would you give (in exchange for your soul)?" They recorded over 60 songs before 1938 when Bill formed the now legendary Blue Grass Boys, in which he sang the lead and played mandolin solos.

Hood County Texas Genealogical Society Biographical Note William Monroe Brazell Collected by Billy Bob Bert Brazell WILLIAM MONROE BRAZELL 1846-1888 (his tombstone has 1844-1888) The 1850 Marshall County census lists these other names; Elizabeth, b. 1847, Eason, b. 1849, Martha, b. 1854, Thomas J. b. 1856, Jonathan Franklin, b. 1858, Samantha (Fannie), b. 1861, and Sarah J. , b. 1864. Bill was 15 years old when the War of the Northern Agression broke out. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at age 17 and was later assigned to the re-organized unit, 8th (Livingstons) Cavalry Regiment. The unit completed its ortganization at Gadsden, AL, during the spring of 1864. In July it reported to General Pillow at Blue Mountain with about 250 men. Later the unit was assigned to General Clanton's Brigade, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. It was engaged at Ten Islands, served in Western Florida, then sustained heavy losses in the conflict at Bluff Spring. By February 1865, its strength had grown to 600, but after skirmishing in Alabama, few were present when the regiment surrendered at Gainesville 4 May 1865. Colonel Henry J. Livingston, Lieutenant Colonel T. L. Faulkner and Major Sidney A. Moses were in Command. The following was taken from a copy of his parole: A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER, OF CO. F, REGIMENT 8 ALA. Blu eg rass music didn't exist when Monroe was born, didn't exist until he invented it. Bill Monroe didn't create bluegrass music out of thin air, of course; raised in rural Kentucky, he grew up surrounded by the music of both the white and black cultures of the region. Elements of traditional country and string band music, religious songs, and acoustic blues appear in bluegrass, but the synthesis and the drive Monroe added were his alone. As the youngest of six brothers (and with two sisters), Bill Monroe took up the mandolin because his older siblings had already staked their claims on his preferred choices: Harry and Birch played the fiddle, and Charlie (and sister Bertha) played the guitar . Such a pronouncement was, and continues to be, one of country music's great understatements. Born on a farm just outside of Rosine in Western Kentucky, on September 13, 1911, William Smith "Bill" Monroe, the youngest of 8 children, would become a major influence not only in country music, but other genres as well. Even today he has fans in places where the most sophisticated mainstream country acts have trouble. On February 17, 1936, in a Charlotte, North Carolina, warehouse, Bill and his brother Charlie recorded their first session. The results appeared on Victor's budget line Bluebird label and included the hits "What Would You Give In Exchange For Your Soul," "Nine Pound Hammer," "New River Train" and a cover of the Carter Family's "Foggy Mountain Top." For the next two years, the brothers recorded some 60 selections for Bluebird, about half of which were gospel and most of which were arranged by Charlie. During the 1940s, without his brother, Monroe refined and crafted his sound. By 1946 he had created what many call the greates bluegrass band of all time - Earl Scruggs on banjo, Lester Flatt on guitar and vocals, Howard Wats, a/k/a Cedric Rainwater, on bass and Chubby Wise of fiddle. It is said that this was the band that truly defined bluegrass music via the 28 recordings made for Columbia between September, 1946, and October, 1947.
