Clayton Moore
Born: Jack Moore
September 14, 1914
Chicago Illinois
Jack grew up in Illinois and was a circus acrobat at the age of 8. He would work his way up to aerialist with two circuses and also appear at the 1934 World's Fair. Jack then went to New York where he found work as a male model. Hollywood was his next stop and he entered films in 1938 as a bit player and stuntman. In 1940, at the suggestion of producer Eddie Small, Jack changed his first name to Clayton. He would appear in 'B' movies and serials through 1942. After the war, he would return to these supporting roles while concentrating on westerns. By 1949, he was playing the masked man, but that man was Zorro in 'Ghost of Zorro (1949)'. Clayton was hired to appear in the Television version of the popular radio show called "The Lone Ranger". One of the things that he had to do was to work on his voice so that he sounded like the radio Lone Ranger. When he got that right, he would become famous, along with Tonto, on the small screen. Clayton was "The Lone Ranger" from 1949 to 1952 until he was fired in a salary dispute. Along with Hop-a-long Cassidy, Clayton was one of the most popular Television western stars at the time. He was replaced by actor John Hart, but Hart's tenure was terminated after one season. It was during this time that Clayton would return to the big screen to enhance his movie career with such memorable movies as 'Radar Men From the Moon (1952)' and 'Jungle Drums of Africa (1953)'. Hired back, at a higher salary, Clayton would be the Lone Ranger until the series ended in 1957 after 169 episodes. Clayton would appear in two color big screen movies, 'The Lone Ranger (1955)' and 'The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold (1958)'. After a lifetime of 'B' movie parts, Clayton found success in a Television Series and he would continue to make commercials and personal appearances as "The Lone Ranger" for the next three decades. At his appearances, Clayton would preach the Ranger's Code of good behavior which he also practiced as his image would never be tarnished with the scandals that affected other big stars.

Mid-1970's Detroit, the auto show at Cobo Arena. There's Clayton Moore at a celebrity booth, blue Lone Ranger uniform, heavy wrinkles - especially around the throat, mask, dyed black hair. You could tell it was dyed since the grey hair of his chest was peaking over the neckline of the uniform. Moore put a "back in half-hour" sign, or some such, on the booth's counter and headed away. I just happened to be maybe ten feet or so behind him. He didn't know I was there as we turned a corner in wayward area of the exhibits. A boy, maybe four-years-old and certainly no more than five, stepped into the aisle and asked, "Could I get your autograph, Long [sic] Ranger?" I slowed up to watch his interaction with this cute little waif. Moore didn't break stride as he muttered, "I'm on break, kid," and then disappeared through a backroom doorway. The boy was crestfallen. I spent my childhood Saturday mornings watching Moore save the world in his TV series. Some hero, huh?

CLAYTON MOORE Actor who played the Lone Ranger
Related story:
Obituary: George C. Scott "I'll wear the white hat the rest of my life. The Lone Ranger is a great character, a great American. Playing him made me a better person." Clayton Moore, the actor irrevocably identified with the Lone Ranger the masked man of the Plains who raced on horseback to the "William Tell Overture" and the cry of "Hi-Yo, Silver!" died of a heart attack in Los Angeles on December 28. He was 85. Born in Chicago, Moore entered show business as a circus trapeze performer before heading to Hollywood in the 1930s, where he graduated from stunts to bits in Saturday afternoon serials. "The Lone Ranger" was originally a radio program and the basis of a few low-budget films in the 1930s. When it was transplanted to television in 1949 on the brand-new ABC network one of the first programs filmed especially for the medium Moore took the role of his life. "Once I got the Lone Ranger role, I didn't want any other," Moore told the Los Angeles Times in 1985. "I like playing the good guy." He said that as a child, "I wanted to be either a cowboy or a policeman. As the Lone Ranger, I got to be both."

Above: Clayton Moore in THE ADVENTURES OF FRANK AND JESSE JAMES (Republic, 1948), his third starring serial. The late Clayton Moore is probably known today only as "that masked avenger of the early west", The Lone Ranger. He has, in fact, acheived the status of a modern-day legend through playing the Ranger. However, Clayton had a distinguished and varied career in serials before donning his mask. In his heroic roles, he displayed the eagerness and passionate earnesty that became his hallmark as the Masked Man, and he put the same sincerity to good effect in his two roles as serial heavies, as well. Above is a large "group" photo from NYOKA AND THE TIGERMEN, featuring the good guy expedition members. Left to right: Forbes Murray as Professor Campbell, George Pembroke as Professor Spencer, Robert Strange as Professor Henry Gordon, Kay Aldridge as Nyoka Gordon, Clayton Moore as hero Larry Grayson, and William "Billy" Benedict as Red. NYOKA got Moore's career off to a promising start, but World War Two interrupted and Moore went into the armed forces. When he got out, his status at Republic had slipped a little, and he was given the role of the "action heavy", Ashe, in the very popular THE CRIMSON GHOST (1946). Moore showed his versatility in the role of the vicious Ashe, and created a very memorable villain indeed.

That was true of the man in his private life

He was a gentleman with strong morals and convictions. I was moved to decent values by his strong influences and ability to motivate all that is good in people. He was born Jack Carlton Moore in Chicago on Sept. 14, 1914. He came to Hollywood in the late 1930s to try his hand at acting. While there he met a producer named, Eddie Small. Mr Small suggested he change his first name to 'Clayton.' He started with work as an extra and bit parts. Then He worked in movie serials and a few dozen or so B movies. Mostly as the bad guy. Movies like "Kit Carson" "International Lady" and "The Gay Amigo." He was the leading man in the 1942 serial "The Perils of Nyoka" Later Titled "Nyoka and the Tigermen" In 1949 he was chosen from among 75 actors to become "The Lone Ranger." He finally found the perfect role.
