Search The last temptation of Chris He's been called 'TV's sick joker'. But if you want to tell the truth, sometimes fibbing is the only option By Tim Adams
Guardian Unlimited Sunday April 4, 1999
Chris Morris is, among other things, the most articulate of television critics. When I meet him, in a bar across the road from his office in Soho, he is immediately in the middle of a rant about the previous evening's Newsnight, which had featured footage of the opening salvo against Serbia. Morris replays a voice-over in his word-perfect Paxman: 'Aaaah. Thass a bomb. Bang,' he slurs wearily. 'Dunno what that was - don't suppose John Simpson knows either? ' He raises a lethargic eyebrow at an imaginary talking head on a screen: 'He says bombing is the only option. Yeltsin says no way.' And then with curled lip and disdainful vowels, he delivers the trademark insolent payoff: 'Who's right?'

Commentary Imaginary worlds. Real cash. January 16, 2002: 12:08 p.m. ET Publishers aren't the only ones profiting from online games By Chris Morris NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Manalope the Vicar is a level 60 cleric in Sony's online role playing game "Everquest." He's got amulets and magic rings out the wazoo, more hit-points than he knows what to do with and is the proud owner of the chestplate of vindication. And he's about to make his creator significantly richer. Manalope's for sale on eBay - and as of Wednesday morning, he had bids totaling $2,000, with five days left in the auction. That same day, a level 60 warrior will be sold. Current bid price: $1,200. Auction sales of online characters have been going on for a couple of years. They are a good indicator, though, of how gamers are finding ways to make money off of their hobby. "It does surprise me that people are willing to spend that much," said Dustin Schwartz, a 19 year old who's selling the Manalope account for a friend. "But people are lazy and they don't want to spend a ton of time to create a character."

Back To The Funnel Next Article An Introduction To Chris Morris
Mention the name of Chris Morris to certain student types, and you will hear tones of deification. Mention Christopher Morris to the average Daily Mail reader and you will hear sounds of def ecation. How many comedians do you know who are hailed by some as God and some as Satan, with faces not altogether unstraight? He's produced some of the best comedy that television and radio has ever presented. If you haven't heard or seen it, bury your head in shame (or buy the videos and cassettes as available)... Who is Chris Morris and why is he funny? Right, I assume you're reading this and are not too sure who this Morris guy is, or maybe you've turned him off on the way to the pub only to regret it afterwards. Well, here's who Chris Morris is not: he's not a standup comedian. He's not a rent-a-celeb. He's not a "working man's club" comic. He's not an "alternative comedian" (in the accepted sense of the genre). He doesn't do interviews very often. He hasn't sold out to advertising. You will not see him at the Variety Club Awards or with a red nose in a god-forsaken African country. He is one of Britain's least well-known and most brilliant, innovative and dangerous comedians. His comedy combines the misanthrope of Jonathan Swift, the linguistic tomfoolery of James Joyce, the surreal sillyness of Monty Python, the "estrangement" of Bertold Brecht, the biting satire of Juvenal and the anger of Bill Hicks. He seems to respect few taboos, and his only approach to sacred cows is to milk them until they're dry and chaffing. He revels in buffing the mortal fool beneath the husk of every human, from people in the street to politicians up high. With sharp editing, high production values, a caustic realism, superb character acting, and an underrated musical ability, Chris Morris is one of the few comedians who can make one incontinent with laughter just by modulating his voice several semitones within a hoax "interview".

32. Activism And The Gay Age Of Consent
chris morris, who campaigned successfully to equalise the age of consent in Britain, tells his own story.
http://www.chrismorris.com/ageofconsent.htm
Activism and the Gay Age of Consent
THIS PART OF MY LIFE
began in 1995 when I was 16. I had just moved to London when I was approached by Stonewall, the gay rights group, to take a test case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). They asked me to protest that the unequal age of consent – 18 for gay men and 16 for heterosexuals at the time – was contrary to international law and a violation of my human rights. I saw it as an opportunity to do something worthwhile and also get to know other young people in London. So began five years of activism. The case was lodged with the ECHR and I was immediately door stopped by two journalists from the Daily Mail . I spent much of the following two years doing talks and interviews about what it was like to be young and gay. I tried to be honest. I believed that the root cause of most prejudice was ignorance and that the solution was therefore education. I wanted to challenge the stereotype of "dirty old men" chasing "vulnerable children" and persuade people that the unequal age of consent did not protect young gay people, as many well-meaning people believed. Far from it, in fact - the inequality created a climate where teenagers could not ask for advice, felt isolated and risked a criminal record for doing the same things that their straight friends were doing quite legally. There was a symbolic message in that too: that being young and gay was wrong while being young and straight was right. By changing the law, I believed we would be one step closer to smashing that belief.

Chris Morris has emerged as one of the most astute, and controversial, satirists of his age. With credits such as On The Hour, The Day Today, Jam and Brass Eye under his belt, his brand of humour is frequently dark and uncomfortable, as Andrew Walker of the BBC's News Profiles Unit explains.
There can be no doubt about Christopher Morris's abilities. Performer, writer, journalist, musician, he is at the centre of a loose group of cutting-edge artists which includes Steve Coogan, alter ego of Alan Partridge, the playwright Patrick Marber and Doon Mackichan of the Smack The Pony team. But, while the others are showered with plaudits, Chris Morris has ploughed his own controversial furrow as television's ultimate taboo-breaker. Brass Eye: near the knuckle
His most recent Brass Eye, dealing with paedophilia, has been branded by The Sun newspaper as the "sickest TV ever". If Chris Morris set out to rattle a few cages, he has clearly succeeded. But Brass Eye is only the latest in a long list of superbly-crafted, if outrageous, hoaxes perpetrated by Morris. His comedy is unsettling and often disturbing, ridiculing the medium as much as the message, more Lenny Bruce than Lenny Henry.

Or, to put it another way, why doesn?t Radio 1 commission more programmes from writers such as Chris Morris, thereby attracting listeners other than giggly schoolgirls requesting Blur for their boyfriends? Morris?s second Blue Jam series has the same effect on this structureless and often shambolic station as a Loch Linnhe oyster turning up in a tub of jellied eels. Blue Jam has class. I was going to say enough class to qualify it for Radio 3 except that it is too zany, too anarchic and too rude for sober Radio 3 audiences.
