Category Opening times Food 7 days from 11am to 1am Atmosphere Service Value Where do you take a large party of people, keen to try the best curry in
Bradford? Where else but the Mumtaz on Great Horton Road. This restaurant
has been our favourite ever since our first official visit in 1999. There
was a slight relapse in 2000, where it fell back into the chasing pack, but
since then it has held its head high in the lead, a yardstick for others to
follow. With thirteen mouths to feed, the Mumtaz was certainly going to have a job
on its hands to keep us all happy. It was a warm evening and since the
restaurant was bulging to capacity, we were shown to the last table upstairs. Fortunately, an air conditioning unit sat alongside, and as long as we didn't mind the gentle thrumming of the compressor, it would only be the food raising our temperatures.

In the stud she produced six winners: the very fast two year old, Mirza 2nd, Badruddin, Furrokh Siyar, Mah Mahal, Mumtaz Begum and Rustom Mahal. Her colts were better than her fillies, who were somewhat disappointing. However, when her daughters retired to stud their influence would be profound. Mah Mahal foaled Mahmoud, Pherozshah, Khan Bahadur, Mbale and Mah Iran; Mumtaz Begum bred eight winners including Nasrullah, Dodoma 2nd, Sun Princess, Malindi, Bibibeg and Rivaz; while Rustom Mahal produced Fille du Regiment and Abernant.
Among her many notable descendants are Mahmoud, who won the Epsom Derby in record time and became a Leading Sire in 1946 in America, and 3rd on the Sires' List in 1942 in Great Britain, and Nasrullah, who won the Champion Stakes and a third in the Epsom Derby and went on to become a Leading Sire in 1955, 1956, 1959, 1960, 1962 in America, as well as a Champion Sire in Great Britain.
Mumtaz Mahal was in the Aga Khan's stud in France when war broke out. When the stud was overrun by the Germans they left her behind, perhaps due to her age, or perhaps out of respect; she died there not long after. Mumtaz Mahal belongs to the Crab Mare branch of Family 9 that decends from the Old Vintner Mare.

CROWN OF THE PALACE
Historical Significance of the Taj Mahal
In 1612, Arjumand Banu Begam, better known by her other name , Mumtaz Mahal was married to Shah Jehan (then Prince Khurram), the fifth mughal emperor. This marriage, although the emperor's second, was a real love-match, and Mumtaz was her husband's inseparable companion on all his journeys and military expeditions. She was his comrade, his counsellor, and inspired him to acts of charity and benevolence towards the weak and the needy. She bore him fourteen children, and died in childbed in 1630 (only three years after his accession to the throne) in Burhanpur in the Deccan where she had accompanied him on a military campaign. Overpowered by grief, Shah Jehan was determined to perpetuate her memory for immortality and decided to build his beloved wife the finest sepulchre ever - a monument of eternal love. It was Shah Jehan's everlasting love for Mumtaz that led to the genesis of the Taj Mahal. The sad circumstances which attended the early death of the empress who had endeared herself to the people inspired all his subjects to join in the emperor's pious intentions. After twenty-two laborious years, and the combined effort of over twenty thousand workmen and master craftsmen, the complex was finally completed in 1648 on the banks on the river Yamuna in Agra , the capital of mughal monarchs.

Our President
Syed Mumtaz Ali
President, The Canadian Society of Muslims (Dec. 2000)
Syed Mumtaz Ali, taking the oath of office over the Qur'an in 1962
The President of the Canadian Society of Muslims recently received (March 2001) two awards for outstanding service to Islam from the Muslim community here in Toronto. They asked for a one-page resume listing his accomplishments which was then published in a booklet that outlined the recipients of the awards and their accomplishments. We thought our readers would like to know a bit about the background of our President, so we have reproduced here the description we gave of his accomplishments to that committee. Syed Mumtaz Ali has a long and impressive resume, but unfortunately we will only be able to mention a few of his most salient accomplishments here. He was educated at several universities. His first university was Osmania in Hyderabad Deccan, India. Back in the days when he attended it, (the 1940s) Osmania was a famous University and was THE University to attend in India. There he studied under such great people as Maulana Manazir Ahsan Gilani and other prominent scholars such as Beoband and Nadwa as well as Dr. M. Hamidullah. He received a BA in theology and also an LL.B. in Muslim Law from Osmania. He had received various scholarships as well in those studies. Some of the subjects he studied were: the Qur'an (exegesis), Hadith, Usul, Fiqh, Kalam, Logic, Arabic, as well as other Arts subjects. Due to the tumultuous conditions from the unfortunate takeover of Hyderabad by India, and under self-imposed exile, he travelled to Pakistan where he practised law as an Advocate for five years. Then he travelled to London, England where he studied at the University of London. There he completed the courses for an LL.M. in Muslim Law and also courses as a Chartered Secretary.

Mumtaz stepped into the film industry at 14-15 years of age .Too young to be cast as leading lady, she started with bit roles only, but was not missed, and quickly graduated to lead roles in low budget movies.
Slowly with determination and good work, she became one of the leading actresses of the 70's. She was extremely versatile, beautiful and had great charm. She acted in more than 100 films during a short career span of 14 years, and has excelled in every little character that she has enacted. In her very first film with significant banner and role, KHILONA [1970], she won the most coveted best actress award Filmfare in 1970. She has also been awarded the Lifetime Achievement award by Filmfare in 1997.
This good period further extended with her pairing with the then superstar Rajesh Khanna giving many blockbusters including DO RAASTE, SACHCHA JHOOTHA, AAP KI KASAM and more. Some of her major movies which were box office hits as well critically acclaimed too are, RAM AUR SHYAM (1967) with Dilip Kumar, DO RAASTE (1969) and SACHCHA JHOOTHA (1970) with Rajesh Khanna, KHILONA (1970) with Sanjeev Kumar, and AAP KI KASAM (1974) with Rajesh Khanna and Sanjeev Kumar.
Though, Zeenat Aman got all the attention in HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA, Mumtaz was also eye catching and impressive as the naive Nepali lass. Her other film with Dev anand, which made good business at the box office and also earned her good reviews was TERE MERE SAPNE.

Urmila Matondkar is elusive these days. This media-friendly girl is now reluctant to meet the press. And she begs all the scribes to not to ask any questions other than her films. In other words, ‘No personal questions please’ is what she wanted to convey. Why? Because she herself doesn’t know the status of Ramu’s mind now. Rumour has it that our Ramu is seeing Premakatha girl Anthramali.
Takkari Girl Tantrums!
She wooed Mahesh Babu with her sultry looks in Takkari Donga. Though the film misfired at box-office, she has got rave reviews. So some producers have asked her to act in their films but in return they got uncomprehending reply from her.
After the success of Raaz , she thinks that she has got high demand. Hence she asks huge remuneration that a Tollywood producer cannot afford.
Mumtaz - Queen of oomph!
The success of Mumtaz is very interesting story. At a time when heroines themselves doing Vampish roles, Mumtaz’s ascending to the top slot is definitely amuses everyone. She replaced the slot that has been vacant with the sudden demise of Silksmitha. Mumtaz’s popularity among Telugu and Tamil youth is well known now. But the interesting part is that a soft porn film done by her long back is releasing soon.

Mumtaz Mumtaz in Khilona (1970) Mumtaz could be considered the most underrated Bollywood movie star of the 60s and 70s. She was never given the critical accolades that lesser stars received and producers and directors never gave her the plumb lead roles she deserved. However in the over 120 films she appeared in Mumtaz shone. Maybe it was her vivaciousness and carefree spontaneous energy that turned her off to the critics that just couldn't seem to take her seriously? She was in the 60s full of 'zing' she was groovy, Mumtaz was Mod maybe too Mod for a traditional 'serious' star. She started out as a bit player and rose to the top ranks, an unheard of feat in Bollywood where a form of caste system exists. She could have remained an 'item' dancer doing those special frothy numbers that are inserted in every Bollywood film but on her talent she rose above that role and eventually became a big star. Mumtaz retired in the 70s at the top of her career after marrying 'the 'richest man in Africa' Mayur Madhwani leaving the tinsel of Bollywood far behind.
