Today, the same mechanical school teachers live on to give yet another generation of pilots a feeling for a time when learning to fly was a survival skill, not a luxury. Although yellow was the common trainer color, the endless sea of young faces would be channeled off to at least four different airplanes when training command opened the gates. He's Oakland's starting centerfielder and one of my favorite players. He's managed to wrap up the future CF job for Oakland having only played less that a year up in the big show. This is quite an accomplishment in it's own right... In '97 Ryan started the season in Single-A Visalia, but made his way through the A's minor leagues with a giant leap up to Triple-A Edmonton for the Pacific Coast Playoffs. (Which the Trappers won!) Coming into '98 Spring Training, Ryan was considered a contender for the CF job, but definitely not a front runner. However that all changed quickly when he busted out of the gates with a .349 BA and a .451 OBP. He played in almost every game and really opened alot of eyes while he was down there. One could have argued (me included) that he won the CF job coming out of Spring Training, but the A's went with the "veteran" Jason McDonald, because he had played competantly there the season before. But it wasn't long into the season when McDonald went down onto the DL with his first injury. Ryan stepped in a did a reasonably good job. However once McDonald came back off the DL, the job was given back to him and Ryan was sent down to AAA.

The '77 Series, however, marked the birth of "Mr. October", as Reggie Jackson slugged three home runs on three successive pitches in Game 6 to clinch the Series for the Yanks. Less than two years later, on July 13, 1979 , I watched the Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball. They were facing a 32-year old fireballer named Nolan Ryan . That night, he nearly threw his fifth career no-hitter without his best stuff. He "settled" for his 7th one-hitter while striking out 9 in a 6-1 victory. It was this type of performance by the Ryan Express that helped him gain the respect of his peers and the adulation of millions of baseball fans all over the country. Every fifth day, fans came to the ballpark to see if Ryan was going to add another milestone to the baseball record books and a notch to his no-hitter belt. Nearly a decade after his retirement, and only two-and-a-half years after his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, the name Nolan Ryan surprisingly draws the ire of some of his detractors. Just recently, I encountered some baseball "fans" on an Internet message board that expressed their beliefs that Ryan shouldn't be called a "great" pitcher. They also stated that no-hitters weren't "special". All they do, these "fans" stated, was make a good baseball story.

Kate is a modern career woman whose job as a market researcher seems to have sapped the very spirit from her soul. Leopold is the Third Duke of Albany, rich in title but poor of pocket. Kate's eccentric ex-boyfriend - and upstairs neighbor - Stuart (Live Schreiber) discovers how to travel back in time to 19th Century where he sneaks a peek at Leopold, his ancestor who will, in time, invent the elevator. Leopold catches Stuart clicking away with his little spy camera and chases him down, falling with him through the time portal and landing in 2001. Waking from his time travel feeling disoriented, Leopold listens incredulously as Stuart describes, unconvincingly, how he leaped forward to 2001. Stuart does an equally unconvincing job at making Kate believe Leopold is from the past. Kate is a no-nonsense, shoot from the hip, businesswoman who has no time for time travel silliness. Leopold realizes he's not in Kansas anymore, but can't fathom where - or when - he is.
