That's Professor Bill Nye 'The Science Guy,' and he'll lecture here Oct. 16
By Susan Lang Bill Nye, a.k.a. "The Science Guy," is coming to Cornell as a Frank H.T. Rhodes Class of '56 Professor, Oct. 12-18. During his stay, Nye will give a free public lecture, "Living on a Speck," Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Statler Auditorium. Tickets are required for the lecture and will be available beginning today, Oct. 11, on campus at the Willard Straight Hall ticket office, the service centers at Noyes Community Center and the Robert Purcell Community Center and off campus at the Sciencenter, 601 First St., Ithaca. Other highlights of Nye's visit will include: the opening address at the first universitywide conference on K-12 science, math, engineering and technology outreach, Oct, 13; an address to about 100 alumni on the Mars Surveyor mission with Jim Bell, assistant professor of astronomy, Oct. 13; participation in the community build at Ithaca's Sciencenter (he's on the Sciencenter's board), Oct. 14. He also is scheduled to meet with first-year engineering students; the staffs of the National Science Digital Library and the Center for Materials Research; and classes in mechanical and aerospace engineering, astronomy, design and environmental analysis, and education. Nye, who will be a Rhodes Class of '56 Professor until 2004, is a 1977 graduate of Cornell's Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He is best known for his weekly, half-hour, Emmy Award-winning shows, "Bill Nye, The Science Guy," which aired on PBS from 1992 to 1998 and are currently being rerun on the Disney Channel.

Janet Reno and Bill Nye appointed CU Rhodes Class of '56 Professors
Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and science educator Bill Nye have been appointed Frank H.T. Rhodes Class of '56 Professors at Cornell, beginning July 1. The professorships are awarded for a period of one to five years, and appointees are considered full members of the Cornell faculty. Nye and Reno each will serve three-year appointments. A 1960 Cornell graduate with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, Reno was the 2001 Senior Convocation speaker during Cornell's Commencement weekend in May. During her visit, she confirmed she is considering a run for the 2002 gubernatorial race in Florida. As attorney general for almost eight years during the administration of President Bill Clinton, Reno directed the world's largest justice and federal law-enforcement office. She was the first female attorney general as well as longest serving attorney general since before the Civil War. Nye, a 1977 graduate of Cornell's Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, is best known for his weekly, half-hour television series "Bill Nye the Science Guy," which was designed to promote the wonders of science to fourth-graders. With his trademark thumbs-up signal and the ubiquitous slogan "science rules," Nye taught his TV audience many of the concepts he learned as a Cornell engineering student. The show ended two years ago, and Nye now is working on his fifth book, serving as consultant with the environmental vehicle division at General Motors and appearing as a guest speaker in a variety of settings, among other activities.

Back to the Future "Science rules!"
Legend has it that Cornell-educated, Washington, D.C., native Bill Nye got his nickname while working as a writer and comic for a local Seattle comedy show called Almost Live! The show's host mistakenly referred to the energy output of a local power plant in terms of "jigawatts." Bill informed him that the correct pronunciation was "gigawatts," to which the host replied, "Who do you think you are? Bill Nye the Science Guy?!" A surge of electricity in the form of a light bulb went on in Bill's head that day (at one foot per nanosecond) and the rest is history.
Bill Nye the Science Guy was the first television show to run concurrently on PBS and commercial stations, and it was an instantaneous hit on both. The character first came to national television audiences as Doc Brown's lab assistant in a segment of the Saturday morning series Back to the Future , but Bill Nye had been doing science-oriented stand up comedy since the mid-80's. Perspectives from the field: Bill Nye, the Science Guy
    By GAIL REPSHER EMERY
Bill Nye, 46, has worked on flight control systems, designed equipment for oil slick skimming and a navigation system for jets. He has been a consulting engineer to the Justice Department and several firms. But he's not famous for his hydraulic pressure resonance suppressor, which is still flying on Boeing 747s. Rather, the bow-tie-wearing science enthusiast is best known for "Bill Nye the Science Guy," the long-running children's science television program on PBS. Nye spoke with Washington Technology Staff Writer Gail Repsher Emery about how he explains complicated subjects in simple terms and what can be done to get students more interested in science.
WT: You are working on a new PBS show, "The Eyes of Nye." How will this be different than "Bill Nye the Science Guy"?
Nye: "The Eyes of Nye" will give people a scientific view of the world people who are old enough to vote. We are going to use multisyllabic words with abandon. On the old show, we taught buoyancy without ever using the word density.

Bill Nye’s Recommendations for Science Education Policy, Spring 1998 We are all scientists. That’s what makes us the Earth’s dominant animals. We must have populace as scientifically literate as possible to survive. It’s our nature. People often ask me what’s my secret? How do I combine entertainment with education on my television show, or in my lecture demonstrations? How do I make science fun? Well for me, there is nothing more interesting, nothing more compelling, nothing more important than science. Our world is fascinating and beautiful. Nature is mysterious and elegant. I just try to show this to our viewers. There are a few things that have become clear to my coworkers and me over the course of producing 100 Bill Nye the Science Guy Shows. First of all, science is compelling to watch. The advantage that science education has over other studies is that we have demonstrations; we have props. I’m convinced that our school systems have to be able to provide all teachers with equipment to do compelling and important demonstrations in class. The demonstrations are the most popular part of the Bill Nye the Science Guy show. I believe this is just because they appeal to human nature. They’re fascinating to watch and understand. We have to provide facilities and equipment so that students can try things for themselves. I believe that is the key to successful learning. Then a student of any age knows it, for her or himself. A teacher doing a demonstration is one thing, but a student doing it for her or himself is another. There is nothing more empowering. We need to provide the materials.

Email this story I can see why Bill Nye appeals equally to kids and to adults. After speaking to him on the phone the other day, I learned all kinds of things, like why he needed to update his application to the astronaut program and why sidewalks are technology. Sidewalks technology? According to the Science Guy, everything, and I mean everything, is technology. I explained to Bill that being the oldest woman at TechTV, I'm not all that tech savvy, so please explain. He replied, "How do they make sidewalks?" Oh, I get it. Technology is used to make everything. "Right, the food you eat, the chair you're sitting on, everything uses technology." He had a point. I told him I just got some AquaBabies , those miniature little fish, to put in my cubbie at work. I started thinking about the ecosystem and realized that he's effected my way of thinking from just our brief conversation. I went to his
