61. Southern Utah Trip
Tonopah is full of dusty ORV’s. 10 miles out of town an American flag lies crumpledin the roadside dirt, plainly okeeffe would likely find inspiration here.

Trip to Southern Utah Spring 1999
When you travel solo, you get to think a little. OK, you get to think A LOT. Ponder. Wonder. Ruminate on the state of the world. Speculate on the particular shape and substance of your navel. Sometimes you stray way off into the weeds. I did a lot of this. I took a trip to Southern Utah over the last 2 weeks of April. The first week was mostly solo, and the second week was a backpack with the Desert Survivors, a desert hiking and conservation group. Here’s an index for those who might want to just poke around. - First Day: Birds in Nevada
- Second Day: North of the lake. Floodfunnel Canyon
- Day 3: Pilgramage to Lake Powell.
- Fourth Day: Kaiparowits Plateau
- Fifth Day: Slots
- Sixth Day: Return to the Escalante
- Seventh Day: Waterpocket Fold, Secret Garden and Arch
- Day 8: South Cainville Mesa.
- Other Days: Dirty Devil
- Day Hike: Zen and the Art of Canyon Exploring - My Own Private Sipapu - Last Day: Burr Point "Your black cards can bring you money so you hide them when you're able, In the land of milk and honey you must put them on the table." -Steely Dan

United We Read
Plainsong by Kent Haruf
Teacher's Guide Language Arts
Listed below are examples of classroom exercises for educators to use with their students during the United We Read community-wide reading campaign. Journalism
  • Organize a class into groups and have each group produce a newspaper from Holt, Kansas reporting on local events
    a. Obituaries
    b. Profiles of members of the community
    c. Gossip
    d. Farm News
    e. High School News
    f. Advertisements
  • Create a graphic novel of the book. Poetry
  • Have your students write a poem about one of the characters in the novel. The poem could be about the character's actions in the novel, or a poem that describes the character.
  • Students could write a sonnet about Plainsong , or a haiku about a character.
  • Have your students write a poem about the Plains. Short Stories A good project for students might be rewriting the ending of the book. If one character made a different choice than was written how would that affect the ending of the novel? Also a classroom discussion of choices versus outcomes would be great for students after they have completed a written activity. Speech Select issues from the novel, e.g. bullying, teen pregnancy, mental illness, single parent families, aging, and make speeches about the issue which relate to the book dealing with the same subject. Students could discuss how to solve those problems vis-à-vis the characters and how to get assistance for these issues in their own communities.

Blanchard, ID USA - Friday, August 17, 2001 at 02:55:50 (EDT) I guess I should have signed in before signing up for e-mail - hope someone reads my comments there! To repeat myself (and I seem to do that a great deal no matter where I am), I am VERY excited that the band will be in my hometown for our annual Blues Festival in October. I don't think South Carolina left a very pleasant taste in their mouths when they gave a free concert at the University of South Carolina in Columbia (perhaps a late 70's thing), but there was a small contingent of very big fans, and we let everyone at the concert that day know exactly how we felt about the music. Some things never change, thank God!

Lugoff/Camden, SC USA - Thursday, August 16, 2001 at 23:38:24 (EDT) Hi Stick....I am so looking foreward to October 7th when you grace our presence in B'ham...have been a fan for years!!! Castle Combe Race Day Monday August 26th
Race 1 - BRSCC Formula First Championship Castle Combe FF1600 Championship TVR Tuscan Challenge Super Road Saloon Championship, Classes A and B BRSCC Pre '90 FF1600 Championship The first race was red flagged, and a car was brought back in pieces on the back of a lorry after two laps. The race was restarted with an amended grid: BRSCC Pro-Sport 3000 Championship Porsche Cup TVR Tuscan Challenge Grid order same as race order for Race 4. Result: 1 Ian Flux 10:26.43, 105.74mph 1:00.59, 109.32mph (record) 2 Bobby Verdon-Roe 10:32.60 3 Martin Stewart 10 laps 4 Steve Cole 5 Troy Dunlop 6 Mark Lemmer Race 10 - Castle Combe Saloon Car Cup 1st race was red flagged after a horrendous accident. Keith Macaskill lost it in Hammerdown, spun into the in field, managed to miss the marshall's post, but span back across the track. He was collected in the passenger side door at 100+ mph by team mate Warren Dunbar, flipping the Astra. The Astra's front end was almost flattened into a straight piece of metal from the front end to the front piece of the internal roll-cage, and the passenger side door, plus the chassis at this point, was crushed inwards by over 1.5 feet. The front window pillars were cut through and the roof pulled back to get the driver out, who was concious. He was taken to hospital suffering pelvic injuries. The race was restarted over four laps, but another red flag two laps later brought the race to a halt. Due to the approaching 6:30pm curfew, the last race was abandoned.

Steve Langasek's PV-HOWTO covers most of this, available at: Folks at the University of Michigan, Cornell University, North Carolina State University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, among others, have almost certainly dealt with these issues as well, and have had and may still have documentation available on the web you might find useful. Inspection of the default cells in the code for RedHat's pam_krb5afs.so, for example, suggests that the code in that package was put together at NCSU. No surprise there, since RedHat's World HQ and NCSU are only a few miles from each other! Steve Langasek, Chris Campbell, Kevin Puetz, Tracy Di Marco White, John Hascall, Dave Edsall, Landon Evans, Thomas Kula and perhaps a few others that I'm unfortunately forgetting have been very helpful and inspirational, both through f2f discussion and via the aafugit@aafugit.org mailing list, in my quests to get my machines working with Kerberos and AFS and in spreading the good word of ubiquitous (or, at least, campuswide) coordinated logins. Proper credits should also be available in the RPM packages listed below for their contributors.
