The Aramaic inscription from Tel Dan by Giovanni Garbini Professor of Semitic Studies University of Rome "La Sapienza" Around the beginning of August of last summer (1993) news of an important archaeological discovery made in Israel appeared in the international press: part of an Aramaic inscription from the 9th century BCE was found at the site of Tel Dan (aka Tell el-Qadi), in the extreme north of the country near the border with Syria. In it there was mention of Israel and the "house of David". In Italy the news appeared, with great effect and sensational headlines, on the 7th and 8th of August in almost all daily papers, while on the 23rd of the same month the "Corriere della Sera" [an Italian newspaper] published an interview made with Avraham Biran, the archaeologist who made the discovery. With encomiastic diligence, the epigraph was published in the month of November edited by Biran himself and Joseph Naveh, the leading specialist in Aramaic epigraphy in Israel(1). The document appears to be of extreme interest, both for its antiquity and for its content, as a historical inscription drawn up by an Aramaic sovereign (whose name hasn't been preserved) who describes one of his victories over the king of Israel and that of the "house of David". A document, this, that evinces a close parallelling with the famous Mesha stone, discovered in 1869, and that inserts itself into the context of the narrative of 1 Kings 20 and 22 which tells of the war of Ahab, king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, against Ben-Hadad, king of Damascus; a war that ended with the defeat of the two Hebrew kingdoms and the death of Ahab (around 850 BCE). The most interesting datum offered by the fragment discovered at Tel Dan is based on the mention of the "house of David" (byt dwd): it is in fact the first time in absolute that an extra-biblical source has even indirectly mentioned the great Hebrew ruler.
