SATELLITE SURFING
An engineer takes a sip of coffee and turns his attention from the television to his beeping laptop. With a few clicks and keystrokes he's opened a browser window, checked, tweaked and updated a few figures. Disaster averted, he returns to watching television.
650 kilometers above, a satellite receives his commands and adjusts its position.

A little too William Gibson to be true? Think again.
Engineers from the Operating Missions as Nodes on the Internet (OMNI) project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center have Internet access to spacecraft. The OMNI team uploaded standard Internet software to the orbiting UoSAT-12 micro-satellite deployed in 1999 by UK-based Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. They then activated the software and successfully "pinged" the satellite. A ping is the Internet equivalent of the sonar pings over-used in submarine thrillers like The Hunt for Red October . Ideally a ping results in an echo-like response, confirming that an Internet connected computer, in this case the satellite, is operating normally.
From Net Provider to Net Participant
Communication service providers have used satellites to provide the infrastructure of Internet for more than two decades, but until OMNI satellites didn't have their own Internet IP address and could not recognise Internet messages. At the moment data from NASA missions has to be converted at ground stations before it's forwarded onto Internet-based scientists. The links between these ground stations and spacecraft require expensive specialised hardware and unique, custom communications protocols to package the data, but not for much longer...

Balloons and Rockets

Sounding rockets achieve altitudes of 50 km to more than 1000 km, thereby enabling astronomical observations at all ultraviolet wavelengths. Like balloon flights, sounding rocket flights are relatively inexpensive and can be readies in less than six months. The major disadvantages are the small payload capacities and the brief times (less than 30 minutes). NASA launches an average of 35 sounding rockets each year with a success rate of about 98 percent. Rocket launch sites have been established at Wallops Island in Virginia, White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, and Poker Flat Research Range in Arkansas. The rocket shown here is a multi-stage Black Brand XII being launched from White Sands. Constellation Of Orion and the Orion Nebula
The constellation of Orion the Hunter is the most prominent stellar grouping in the winter sky. Even in moonlit conditions, Orion can be seen doing battle with his eternal foe, Taurus the Bull. The three aligned stars in Orion's "belt" are most easily recognized, causing some first-time observers to mistake Orion for the Big Dipper.

Researcher Foresees Day When Motorists No Longer Need to Stop And `Fill `Er Up'
WARRENDALE, Pa., Dec. 30 You're cruising down the freeway in your electric vehicle in the year 2005 and are about to run out of "fuel." No need to panic, exit and stop for more power because you've already purchased your "energy units" at the local grocery store. Your car sends a signal to one of many power transmitters along the highway that "hear" your cry for help. As you continue driving, your vehicle is recharged.
Ronald J. Parise, Research Scientist and President, Parise Research Technologies, refers to this new technical application as the Vehicle Remote Charge, described in a paper he will present at the Society of Automotive Engineers 2000 World Congress in Detroit, Michigan, March 6-9, 2000.
Parise's invention envisions an all-electric, wireless transportation system that will drastically reduce air pollution, while providing consumers full mobility and the convenience they currently enjoy with gasoline-powered vehicles.

Ohio Astronauts
Ohio, "The Birthplace of Aviation," is home to 24 astronauts. Why so many? Ohio astronaut Tom Henricks , during the pre-flight press conference for STS-70 cited several contributing factors:
  • Role models such as John Glenn ("the first all Ohio crew") and Neil Armstrong , the first human to walk upon the Moon during the Apollo project The Midwestern work ethic
Native Clevelander Sets Space Endurance Record
Ohio astronaut and Cleveland native Carl Walz spent six months in his a home away from home: the International Space Station (ISS). Walz was a part of the Expedition 4crew that traveled to the ISS aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour when it lifted off on December 5, 2001 to begin the STS-108 mission. He returned to Earth on June 5, 2002 during the STS-111 mission. During their stay aboard the ISS, Walz and Expedition 4 crew mate Dan Bursch broke the U.S. space flight endurance record. Walz also holds the U.S. record for most cumulative time in space with 231 days, and while Bursch is second with 227 days. During Expedition 4, they conducted and monitored experiments (including some from NASA Glenn) and conducted several space walks. During his free time, Walz played a small musical keyboard and a guitar. [ More
