As some of you may be aware, Valentine played the delictiblely evil Kronos in a couple eppies of Highlander. I think it was staring at that group photo of the Horsemen that Schmend had on her computer for a few weeks that got me to really fall for this actor. I had seen him before on First Knight, but I was too enamored with Liam Cunningham to notice. The first time I saw him (without knowing who it was) was in an eppie of the the Family Channel's Zorro series. I was a huge fan of the series, as was my sister, and after I found out that he was on the show, I asked if she remembered the eppie. She even had it taped. Within the first few minutes of watching it, I could remember the first time I saw it. I had thought that the theif was cute, but I had never gotten his name...funny how things work out, huh? Before he came out on stage, one of the stewards brought out a tray with a teapot and a cup of tea. When introduced, Valentine walked out with a newspaper, ignoring us all, sat down and poured himself a cup of tea, then started to read the paper. After a moment, he “realised” with a start that he was not alone. Val said that he was disappointed with the way the big fight at the end of First Knight turned out, considering how hard they had worked on it. He said that films with that kind of budget tend to leave the action sequences to the second unit. They had trained for three weeks for the battles, but they had ended up with one action shot per principal actor. The fight itself took five days to film. He said that, when they were filming Guinevere’s arrival at Camelot, one of the crane towers overbalanced and trapped the guy who was on top of it underneath it, severing his leg. He said that Sean Connery was impressive and wielded quiet authority on the set. Valentine also knows Jason Connery and says he is just as nice as his father. Asked about his readings at the Homeland Convention, he said there no plans for him to do any tapes, but he would like to do it if asked. He was reading Raymond Chandler’s novels at the moment and felt that Duncan MacLeod and Philip Marlowe were on opposite sides of a very fine line. He said that the birth of Jude had changed his life profoundly and extended thanks on Jude’s behalf for all the gifts that they had received. Although Jude had prior commitments, he had sent a message and the proud father had a tape played of the younger Pelka’s gurgling, to general delight. Of researching characters, he said that Kronos had required none, whereas Shelley, although he had lived only 31 years, had packed his life full enough to warrant a 600 page biography. He felt that Kronos was a concept rather than a character and that the Horsemen were a manifestation of the evil in society.

He had been asked to give some readings for us only the night before, and so had chosen to read from Copperfield as he was reading it himself at the time. He started by reading from the beginning of the book. He said that he was wandering a lot at the moment - he had just got home from Los Angeles, then come to Australia, then he was returning home, but starting a new project in May, which should last about 10 months. He would not talk about what it was, (but we worked out that he had to be talking about Queen of Swords and it's since been confirmed that he will have a recurring role as a bad guy). He hopes to return to Australia with his wife and son after that. He said he would like to read more French literature, as he had never attempted Zola. He said he had started "The Masterpiece" several times, but never got beyond Chapter 5. He only reads the classics or genre novels, never potboilers. Asked what he would read at the airport, he said that he would prefer to draw, whether what he could see or from memory. He was asked how he reacted to auditioning for one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. He said that he didn't know that at the time and responded to the character he saw in the few pages he was asked to read, as he didn't see the whole script until after he'd got the part. He said research was tricky, as you can research a factual scenario, but Kronos was a flight of David Abramowitz's imagination. He said he had to work with the script and find what worked for the part. He said that he didn't regard Kronos as fitting the adage that those scarred and ugly on the outside are scarred and ugly on the inside. He said that he regarded Kronos as completely whole on the inside, the only scars not visible being perhaps on his pride. He spoke of how fencers wore duelling scars with pride and the Prussian fencers had a slit in their mask to ensure that they received the badge of courage. He added that Kronos' scar was latex and came off at night!

NB: Please read this site's So who exactly is Valentine Pelka? Valentine is one of those actors that when I mention him to my non-Highlander friends, they say. "Never heard of him." Yet when I show them a picture or one of his works, they then say. "Oh him! I remember seeing him in such and such. He was great!" Few may know his name, but he has certainly made impressions on people. To find out more about him, please check out Valentine’s bio (linked to with permission from VPFC webmistress, Gillian Eldridge). So how did I "discover" Valentine? Well unfortunately I haven’t actually met Valentine yet (one day *g*). Now I realize I’d seen him in a few things, before I'd ever seen Kronos in Highlander: The Series , but I never knew who he was. The most memorable thing he was in, and I didn’t realize for the longest time was a Cadfael episode. I distinctly remember thinking when I first saw it, who is that Lord looking so shocked and scared? But, as I usually do, I forgot to look at the credits. A while later I saw Kronos and thought WOW! I love the bad guys, but Kronos was something different. He had such depth and character that I was entranced. It was actually nearly a year later when I saw the second Horsemen episode, "Revelations 6:8", and by that time I was determined to find out more about Valentine Pelka.
