Pickford, Mary
(1893-1979), actor Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on April 9, 1893, Gladys Mary Smith was the daughter of actors. Soon after the death of her father she began taking child's roles in productions in which her mother was playing. She made her first stage appearance in a Toronto stock company at the age of five. At eight she went on tour and within 10 years was playing on Broadway. From 1906 the family adopted the name Pickford. She made her New York debut in David Belasco's The Warrens of Virginia in December 1907. At age 14 she had already learned more of stagecraft than many older actors, and her winsome face, topped by a mass of golden curls, made her appeal virtually irresistible. Mary Pickford began working as a motion-picture extra at D.W. Griffith's Biograph Studio, starring in his 1909 film The Lonely Villa. By 1913 she had turned permanently to the screen, rising to first rank with Adolph Zukor's Famous Players Company. Her meteoric rise from an anonymous player to a star with her own production company (Mary Pickford Studios, created by Famous Players) was attributable not only to the phenomenal popularity of her films but also to her dedication to her craft and her meticulous care in creating quality entertainments. The ringleted ingenue with an expression of sweet sincerity and invincible innocence that she played in such silent films as Hearts Adrift Poor Little Rich Girl Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1917), and

    Pickford, Mary
Als "Little Mary" werd zij een ster in "The little teacher" (1910).

    Biography of Mary Pickford
Mary Pickford was born Gladys Marie Smith on April 8, 1892, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, though in later years she would try to shave a year off her age. Her father was an alcoholic who could not hold a job, and he died when Gladys was a child. Gladys' mother pushed her children into show business for financial reasons, and Gladys was soon a success on Broadway, first known as " Baby Gladys Smith ," until the producer David Belasco christened her "Mary Pickford." Her film career began in 1908, when she met D.W. Griffith, head of Biograph Studios. She began working at Biograph with her friends, Lillian and Dorothy Gish. Griffith specialized in films featuring the damsel in distress stereotype, and both Gish sisters played it to perfection. When Mary felt Griffith was paying more attention to the Gishes than to her, she left Biograph. By this time, 1910, Mary showed that she was already a savvy businesswoman by hopping from studio to studio - wherever the most money was. By 1916 she was already making $16,000 a week. Now known throughout the world as "America's Sweetheart," (abroad Mary was called "The World's Sweetheart") she continued playing little girl roles in films such as

After the busy 1909 season, the following year was no less busy with Mary putting in work on 49 films. In 1911, Mary left Biograph to work with Carl Laemmle, but returned to Griffith the next year. That year she put out 27 films as opposed to 48 in 1911. By now, Mary was 20 and had appeared in 176 films. Performers of today couldn't boast that kind of work record. By 1913, Mary had cut back her grueling schedule drastically, with 4 movies in 1913, but she was by no means idle. She was now writing and producing films. In 1920, Mary was in only two films Suds and Pollyanna, but more importantly helped to establish United Artists Studio. This famed studio was responsible for many great films for the next 60+ years before being bought by MGM. As you can see, Mary was more than an actress, but a tough business woman with a lot of savvy.
    Mary with Douglas Fairbanks.
She was proud of the fact that she knew what worked and what didn't. On top of all that, she was one of 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization who offers the renowned Oscar for motion pictures and performers. Finally, at 43, Mary made her last film entitled Star Night at the Coconut Grove in 1935, whereupon she retired from films forever for a well deserved rest. Her career lasted from 1908 to 1935 encompassing 236 films. Without a doubt, Mary was the most popular star in the silent era if not for all time. She was awarded an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 1976, from the very organization she had started years earlier. On May 29, 1979, Mary died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Santa Monica, California. She was 87 years old.

The Week's Famous and Infamous Women
One should never try to go back. That would be a serious mistake. No, one must always go forward, don't you think? If not in one's sphere, then in another. It isn't good to try to go back to anything, not even to the old home town, or one's old loves.
    Mary Pickford
Silent Screen Star Mary Pickford (1892-1979)
Mary Pickford , the silent-film actor who became known as "America's Sweetheart," was born in Toronto as Gladys Marie Smith. She began her career as an entertainer at age 8 when she began acting with a Toronto stock company. Mary's introduction to the stage was a purely economic move. Her father had died when she was 5 years old and her mother, desperate for a way to support herself and her three children, jumped at the opportunity to audition her daughter for the theater company's open role. Mary soon became the family's principal income earner, traveling and acting with theatrical troupes that toured small towns. It was a difficult life and paid very little, but gave Mary the confidence to push for something better. The young girl who had been touring as Baby Gladys forced her way into the presence of Broadway producer and director David Belasco and persuaded him to give her a starring role in his play, The Warrens of Virginia Coquette . Although Mary won an Academy Award for her performance, she found the transition to sound difficult and retired from acting in 1933. She bought the rights to many of her early silent films, planning to have them destroyed when she died, but her childhood friend Lillian Gish talked her out of the plan. Instead, Mary donated 50 of her early pictures to the American Film Institute. In 1975, she received an honorary Academy Award in recognition of her contributions to the industry. Mary was born on April 8, 1892, and died on May 29, 1979.
