41. Tori's Chat..or Lack Of One!

What can I say? The entire event was rather disappointing. The date was April 9th. On America Online, over 500 people virtually packed the MTV arena to "chat" with Tori. The excitement and anticipation was obvious from the comments scrolling down my screen. People were even fairly patient as the time dragged passed 7:00PM. Then finally at about 7:25, Matt Pinfield from MTV's 120 Minutes program appeared and began praising Tori. He and Tori then had an interesting short conversation. That was followed by a formal greeting from some MTV bigwig. Almost immediately after they started to ask the first question, my connection with AOL was severed. I frantically tried to sign on again, but the MTV arena site was unavailable. I then tried to get to the chat via IRC using my direct Internet account. However, the server was not responding there either. I then noticed on the MTV web site a little note that said the IRC server was having technical difficulties. By now it was 8:00, and I realized that Tori would need to leave and get mentally prepared for the opening concert of her North American Tour, which was just a little over an hour away! I sulked and grew depressed, realizing that the event we had all looked forward to had failed to materialize. When I was able to sign back onto AOL, I hung out a while with some other fans, and we consoled each other. I then learned that Tori did not even have a chance to answer hardly any questions. At least we got to hear from her a little bit, and if you read the transcript below you will see that they seem serious about trying to do this again rather soon!

Way back when Modern Rock went by the name of Alternative, there was this great radio station in the middle of New Jersey (yes, I know, I know, using the words "great" and "New Jersey" together in the same sentence must break some kind of law). WHTG, it was called, and still is, serving the listening area that birthed Bruce Springsteen. Me being from Philadelphia, I used to put foil on the ends of my antenna to try and pick up the tunes. The whole thing was run by a guy named Matt Pinfield. And what a guy, that Matt Pinfield. He perfected the art of looking like Uncle Fester long before Frank Black perfected the art of trashing women rock stars. He's bald, he's got that froggy kind of a voice, and he wears black turtlenecks like they're in style. The guy is such an encyclopedia of musical knowledge there's nothing to do but respect him. Until he mistakes you for some complete other person. A few years ago, I was at this rock show that D.C.'s very own Velocity Girl played (just caught their farewell performance at Brought tears to the eyes, it did. Truly the end of an era). I'm walking around with my friend

THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE
by Michael J. Gallagher
New Album this week If you were to ask my wife what my dream job would be she would probably tell you that I would like to have Matt Pinfield's job. Getting the chance to VJ 120 minutes and hang out with rockstars has got to be the life. Then again, I'm sure Matt has to deal with a lot of criticism from people who think they could do better. But I'm not here to talk about Matt Pinfield...I'm here to talk about the new Foo Fighters release "There is nothing left to lose." About five nights ago there was a world premiere of their new CD along with an interview between Matt Pinfield and David Grohl. I taped the show off the radio and I've listened to it about six times all ready. If you are a fan of the first two Foo Fighters CDs be prepared for their finest work to date.
I've been turning this article over in my head all weekend trying to decide exactly what to say and I just don't think I'll be able to do it justice. I've heard 7 of the 11 tracks and can hardly wait until tomorrow morning when I can rush out and get the full Album. The first track is a rockin' tune called "Stacked Actors" that has an old Bowie feel. My friend who loves Bowie says he'd buy the CD just for that song but the rockin' goodness doesn't stop there. "There Is Nothing Left To Lose" is filled with great guitar riffs, great hooks, and catchy melodies that you won't be able to get out of your head. The whole CD has a classic rock feel with modern rock sound. My favorite song so far is one called Generator. This song contains the coolest and most uncheesiest use of a Talk Box that I've ever heard. Songs run the gambit from all out rockin' and silly to making you feel great and serious.

Well it is possible that one day it happened that Matt Pinfield has enjoyed to see Quantum Project and this magic of Quantum Project has enter as a special thing in the life of Matt Pinfield Come and join this world of true art and spirit. You will be released from the inner pressing and you will enjoy this magical universe which will carry you into another dimension. Art through all its expressions, whether we talk about dance, sculpture, theatre, music, painting or romance, cinema, literature, poetry, design is the only one that can adorn the reality. It is an uplifting situation that those that enrich life are challenging continuously our souls and fantasies. Art is a form of catharsis.- Dorothy Parker click HERE

Is Matt Pinfield a bad subject or not? We belive it is not. It appears here just for dualistic circumstances. Compared to Matt Pinfield everything is likely to appear as something bad. Is it? Art is dangerous. It is one of the attractions: when it ceases to be dangerous you don't want it.- Anthony Burgess Fine art, that exists for itself alone, is art in a final state of impotence. If nobody, including the artist, acknowledges art as a means of knowing the world, then art is relegated to a kind of rumpus room of the mind and the irresponsibility of the artist and the irrelevance of art to actual living becomes part and parcel of the practice of art.- Angela Carter

MTV's Matt Pinfield recently sat down with New Brunswick Underground to wax poetic and nostalgic about New Brunswick's long history as a music city. Known to the nation as the host of the popular Sunday-night show 120 Minutes, around the HUB city, Pinfield is still "Matt." And so, one Sunday night in May with the tape rolling and the sake flowing freely at Sapporo on George Street Pinfield unlocked the filing cabinet of rock and roll anecdotes and memories he keeps below the surface of his unmistakable smooth head. In a gravelly voice that sounds as if it's been finely tuned with Jack Daniels and unfiltered cigarettes, Pinfield talked about everything from his days with the popular local cover band Opium Vala to hanging out with U2 in Brazil. Who else but Pinfield would get a call from an apologetic Bono explaining that he was too indisposed to go out with Pinfield, the Edge and Adam Clayton? "I had a great time with U2 in South America. I went down there to do some interviews for MTV Brazil," Pinfield said. "I flew out to the site in this fucking crazy helicopter I thought I was going to fall out of and Bono greeted me there. We started talking about shit and rapped out." Unfortunately, Bono and Pinfield didn't get to chat much more than that during the visit. "Bono called me, he couldn't do the interview part. We hung at the show but we all got sick. We all got dysentery. We all got the shits, like beyond belief. Me, him and Bill Flanagan from VH1. So, I'm flying back in the plane and I call the voice mail and it's like Matt it's Bono, the fucking stage was hot man, especially for an Irishman. I wanted to come down and hang with you afterwards but I was so sick, I was sitting in my..." (No need to go there Bono). Adam and the Edge told me they had the fucking greatest time with you man. I can't wait till I get to hang with you in America.'"

By Gary Susman NEW YORK It wouldn't be hard to make fun of MTV VJ Matt Pinfield. His appearance (short, bald, likened even by his fans to Uncle Fester), his gravelly voice, his awkward hand gestures, his endless flow of obscure trivia all make him a rarity, not just on MTV but on television in general. So when the Bloodhound Gang parodied him last year in their video "Firewater Burn," he could easily have been offended. He wasn't. "I loved it actually," he admits from behind a desk at MTV's new Times Square headquarters. "I was sitting at a pizza parlor in New York City when [Bloodhound Gang lead singer] Jimmy Pop Ali handed me his demo. He told me he did an imitation of me. He started doing it in the pizza parlor, doing the Pixies' family tree. I was rolling on the floor, it was so funny. So when the video came in to MTV, I was almost anticipating a parody. He really got me down. He went to all the trouble of getting a bald cap. He was doing my nervous hand movements. I thought it was great. The sincerest form of flattery." In fact, Pinfield's shtick is so popular, he's now on the air often enough that they could rename the channel MattTV. Best known for interviewing bands as the host of the weekly alternative-rock showcase

On what terms did matt pinfield join the band? I never thought matt pinfield wouldbe a suitable 6 String Nuclear Detonator Axeman in a grind band, anyways.

Hey John, thanks for doing the interview. I hope you won't make this into a Vespa-fest like the Teufel interview turned out to be. How do you feel your latest release, Summary Execution , came out? Where you pleased with all it's aspects? I myself think it is a great album except for the production, which in my opinion is horrible... Would you agree at all? Paul: We all agree, and are in glee, that it's complete. We were in the studio for over a month, and at times, we struggled believing that it was going to ever be completed. Our relationship with Summary Execution has strengthened our excitement to continue cross breeding our
influences. The production is purposely meant for the listener to easily adjust their EQ, for the appropriate sound their looking for. I suggest you play with your EQ knobs besides your own while listening. Your old vocalist, Spencer, didn't appear on Summary Execution. Can you tell us the reasons behind this? John: We went into the studio to record Summary Execution with every intention of having Spencer taking the vocal duties on the whole album. But once we started recording it, it was coming out so heavy and just crushing and then we started laying down the vocal tracks and as a band we all though that the vocals just weren't doing the music justice. So, we had to make a decision and a change and that's what we did, right in the middle of recording the

Matt Pinfield(MP):...Welcome back to 120 minutes. I'm Matt Pinfield and right now joining me are John and Dan from the band Marcy Playground. Guys, welcome, good to have you here.
John Wozniak(JW): Thanks Matt, hi.
MP: Anyway, let me ask you about the origin of the band name, because people want to know where thats from. It has some background from where you're from originally...Minneapolis.
JW: Right. Yeah. Marcy Playground comes from the school I went to when I was..ummm..about, lets see from ... K through 4th grade. Marcy Open School in Minneapolis. I used to write all these stories about Marcy Playground and stuff like that later on in life.
MP: So it was one of those situations where it was a name, something you held on to for a long time.....Dylan, whose not here right now, and you have an interesting story about how you were reunited after years from going to school together. Can you tell us a little about that.
JW: Yeah...ummm... Actually I didn't go to school with Dylan, because he went to a totally different school in Minneapolis.
MP: But you're from the same town.

Do you have a terribly frustrating and difficult time trying to find CD's by the bands you like?
Do you detest Hanson, and the Backstreet Boys?
Is your favorite radio station run by a bunch of college students with speech impediments, rather that obnoxiously smooth talking disc jockeys?
Are you aware that MTV used to reserve two hours every Sunday night for good videos?
If you answered no to the above questions, then you have probably have no clue what 120 minutes is, so you may as well stop reading this now. End all this painful literacy and go do something you'll enjoy more, like going to a Puff Daddy concert, tending to your Beanie Baby collection, or shopping for khakis at Banana Republic.
If you answered yes to the above questions, then you're probably at least somewhat aware of the MTV show, 120 Minutes. Maybe you're a fan, or maybe you're like me. Perhaps, you remember a time, long ago and far away, when 120 Minutes played half-way decent videos by talented artists, instead of the kind of crap they air now.
