With their new studio album due in mid-April, alternative metal outfit Tool has released an interim box set that should keep fans happy until the band issues what will surely be one of next year's most eagerly awaited albums. The lavish package, which contains a CD and a DVD or a videocassette, features live performances, a few new studio creations and four videos. In this exclusive Farmclub.com interview, press-shy Tool front man Maynard James Keenan talks with Matt Pinfield about the new release, the upcoming studio album and the band's touring plans. He also offers his take on the value of music videos, cites some of the current music that he's listening to and talks about his other band, A Perfect Circle. MATT: How many hours of tapes did you have to go through in order to pick the live tracks for the new release? MAYNARD: Well, it wasn't that difficult to do, 'cause it's close to impossible to really capture a live show. So we went through and eliminated quite a few of the tapes right away because they're just useless. There's no way we could have used them because the recording was bad. So we only ended up choosing from maybe a handful of tapes and just kind of went through and found the best performances that we had available. an interview with Sea Ray [a SXSW 2000 showcase] the interview austinlive: How did you all meet and form the band? sea ray: Four of us, bassist I-Huei Go, guitarist Greg Zinman, guitarist and frontman Jordan Warner and cellist Anne Brewster all went to college together. Drummer Rodd McLeod was a later, New York City, addition. Now we're based in Brooklyn, but the band really came together when we spent a month together in Northern Michigan, practicing every day and hanging out on the various lakes. Having already read through the book twice, I have been able to pinpoint several flaws inherent in this book that work against it as a whole. Perhaps it can best be summed up as "been there, done that." There is certainly not enough new material here to warrant an outrageous cover price of $39.95. Although they claim this book was a labor of love, I can't find any evidence that they did any extensive research for this product. What I mean by that is that every quote in this book came from another source. Most of them will sound familiar to readers of Zicree's book and the two biographies of Serling.

MTV awards same ol' same ol' POSTED: Thursday, 21-Nov-2002, 10:47:38 CST by Monica Manske It's music award season again, that lofty period of self-glorification for the celebrity set. Or in the case of Madonna, that period of self-mutation/mutilation. It is a time to trot out newly-developed personalities amongst the sequins and exposed flesh. For those of you who watched last year's awards (God knows it was repeated so elusively) you were most likely saddened by this year's segment. In 1997 there seemed to be less fluff with memorable moments from Chris Rock, Fiona Apple's acceptance rant, Prodigy, Beck and his whip and, of course, Marilyn Manson's bare ass. This year, Ben Stiller was our host; but he seemed less at ease than Rock was. One bright point of Stiller's performance was his VJ Matt Pinfield impersonation. Since my idea of Hell is watching "120 Minutes" with host Matt Pinfield suddenly posessing a "pause" feature (Picture: videos interrupted every ten seconds so Matt can insert some obscure musical reference); I found Stiller's impersonation insanely funny. As for the other elements of last year: Fiona never made it on stage (blacklist, mmm?), Beck simulated sex with a drum machine (alas, no whip in sight) and Marilyn Manson's ass seemed more shapely. Or so, um, somebody told me, I, um, of course, didn't notice. Did Manson spend the months following the awards watching tapes of his performance; obsessing over his scrawny butt?

I arive at universal studios at about 1:30pm and proceded to the sound stage. All I had to do was follow the beat from Southtown right to the stage. I got in, got my stage passes and took in the last half hour of rehersal. I talked to the boyz and thanked them for letting me chill with them and they in turn thanked me and all of the warriors for spread'n the word and the love. We then had about three hours to kill before they had to be back for the pre show interview. We went to universal studios and went on every ride there. We went back to the parking garage where the boys were presented with ther Gold Records. I thought I was in a dream to be there for that moment.
