Need Help? Eleanor Torrey Powell was born on November 21, 1912, in Springfield, Massachusetts. She started her carreer in 1920 on Broadway, where her machine-gun foot work gained her the title of "World's Greatest Feminine Tap Dancer" in 1929. Powell's Mother wanted her daughter to overcome shyness and therefore placed her in dancing school taking ballet and acrobatic dancing at thirteen years old. Gus Edwards discovered her dancing on the beach at Atlantic City and placed her in one of his Children's Reviews.
Eleanor would continue to broadway, but she realized she need to learn how to tap dance to be successful in the field, so she took $35 worth of tap classes for ten lessons. Eleanor, to say the least was a natural at tap and these ten lessons were the only ones she would ever take. When Powell took a Broadway stage for the first time, she charmed her way into a review in 1928, called The Optimist.
In 1935 she came to Hollywood where she starred in The George White's 1935 Scandals and wished to go back to Broadway. When MGM wanted to dance in another picture she said she would not unless they raised her salary to a quota that she believed they would not pay and have a starring role. Well, MGM did both and Eleanor Powell stayed in Hollywood making some of the great MGM musicals in the late 1930s, establishing herself as a

An unauthorized biography
by Stephan Eichenberg
(c) 1996
Eleanor Powell was born on November 21, 1912 (according to some other sources 1910) in Springfield, Massachusetts, as the only child of divorced parents. As a shy little eleven years old girl she was sent to dancing lessons (acrobatics and ballet - but none in taps!) by her mother in order to make her more sociable. She did well there, and next summer, when she and her mother were visiting relatives in Atlantic City, she was spotted while practising one of the numbers she learned in dancing school on the beach by Gus Edwards, an important producer of children shows, who was doing a show at the Ambassador Hotel. He asked her mother, if her daughter was interested in performing there. They accepted his offer andso twelve year old Eleanor Powell made her stage debut, two nights a week witha gage of seven dollars the night.
The next two years she spend the summer there, too, and appeared im more evening shows. Then she asked her mother, if she could try her luck in New York. During her apperances in Atlantic City she had met band-leader Ben Bernie, who had offered her a stint at his own night-club if she would ever come to New York. He hired her imedationaly, which helped her to find an agent. Due to this, she got a part in the unsucessful Broadway show "The Optimists" in early 1928, which closed after 24 performances. After this show, she was asked in every audition she went to if she could tap, so she decided to take ten lessons a $3.50 in the dancing school of Jack Donohue, the husband of the Broadway star Marilyn Miller. Surprisingly she had great problems with this kind of dancing, so she decided not to come to the second lesson. Jack Donohue missed her, phoned her and asked why she left and offered her his help. She described this lessons later with following words:

June 2000
Jeni LeGon was about seven years old when her sister took her to a stage show at the Chicago Theatre. She watched the dancers on the stage, and then stood up on her chair and shouted, “I’m going to do that! I want to be up there!”(Frank 120). In contrast, Eleanor Powell suffered from shyness as a child. Her mother, acting on the advice of a neighbor, enrolled her daughter in dance classes. Eleanor stated, “To tell you the truth, if someone had said the Girl Scouts, my mother would have had me join the Girl Scouts and I would still be living in Springfield, married to an accountant with five children.” (Levin 12). Thus, these two women began their journeys into the dance world in very different ways. I. Kid Stuff Jeni LeGon was born on August 14, 1916 in Chicago. She was the fifth child in born to Hector and Harriet LeGon. Jeni recalled in an interview that her family lived crowded together in an apartment and didn’t have much money, “even though we were all working to help make ends meet.” ( Living in a Great Big Way As a child, she and her friends sang and danced in front of the tenement houses in their neighborhood. Jeni recalled that they would audition new kids in the neighborhood, and if they weren’t good singers and dancers, they sent them down the street a few blocks, because they only wanted the best in their gang. With his many talents, Gene Kelly became a legendary actor, singer and dancer. Kelly started his career as a dance instructor and grew to be an award-winning performer. Gene Kelly, an accomplished dancer and hard worker, greatly changed the world of dancing and acting. Harriet Eckhart and James Patrick Joseph Kelly (Yudkoff 3) were blessed with a newborn child on August 23, 1912. They named their new son Eugene Curran Kelly (Kamey). James Patrick Kelly was an executive at the Columbia Gramaphone Company, and his wife, Harriet, had had a theatrical career as a child (Rothe 317). Kelly was the middle child of five. Kelly, along with his brothers and sisters, attended St. Raphael's, the Catholic Academy. Later, Kelly attended Peabody High School. He became an outstanding hockey player. He also participated in gymnastics and football, and earned a varsity letter (Yudkoff 13). At age sixteen, Kelly graduated from Peabody High School as an honors student (Yudkoff 16). After his graduation from high school, Kelly went on to college at Pittsburgh University (Yudkoff 32). Kelly began working toward a major in journalism, but later, he changed his major to economics (Yudkoff 18). As his younger brother, Fred, said, "He never wanted to be a dancer. This was not his goal in life. He wanted to be a priest, he wanted to be a ball player, he wanted to be a lawyer." (Yudkoff 9). Kelly graduated from college in 1933. He was twenty years old (Yudkoff 32). After he was graduated, he went into law school. Finding law school too hard, he dropped out and focused more on his dancing (Yudkoff 36).
