IOWA CITY Increasing the number of endowed faculty positions funded by private gifts is crucial to the University of Iowa's ability to continually improve teaching, research and service to the state, speakers told a gathering of nearly 200 UI contributors and faculty recently. UI officials and other speakers at the inaugural Named Deanships, Chairs and Professorships Recognition Luncheon, held in the Levitt Center for University Advancement, stressed that increasing the level of private, endowed faculty support is essential if the UI is to achieve its strategic objectives.

The minutes of the Faculty Assembly meeting of December 12, 2001 were approved with corrections to the attendance record. 2. Provost Jon Whitmore on government relations. Provost Whitmore said there was good news for the University in Governor Vilsack's recent budget recommendation. First, the governor recommended that the base budget under which the University is currently operating be next year's base budget, without further reductions. Second, he recommended full funding of salary increases for faculty and staff. Other requests for additional funding were not included, however, such as additional funds for the College of Public Health and for instructional improvements (primarily library acquisitions and instructional equipment). Whitmore said this was not unexpected in the current fiscal climate. The state's Revenue Estimating Conference would convene in March, Whitmore said, and at that time there would be more news on the budget front. The worst case scenario would be another round of current-year cuts, and the best case would involve funding increases for next fiscal year.

The Faculty Assembly will meet from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, in 70 Van Allen Hall. Please sign one of the attendance sheets available at the door. 1. Discussion/amendment/approval of the minutes of the December 2001 meeting of the Faculty Assembly. 2. Government relations. Provost Jon Whitmore will discuss relations between the University of Iowa faculty and the legislature and governor of the state of Iowa. 3. Collegiate standards for tenured faculty review. Dean Maxson requests discussion of the attached revised draft 4. Amendment of the College's Manual of Procedure regarding eligibility to serve on the Executive Committee. Under the proposed amendments to sections 19 and 21 (pdf file attached) , only those members of the voting faculty with appointments of 50 percent or more on the budget of the College would be eligible for Executive Committee membership. The proposed amendments would not affect eligibility for the Educational Policy Committee or Faculty Assembly. The rationale for this change is that nearly all Executive Committee agenda items touch on personnel issues, budget issues, or strategic planning issues in the College. It is appropriate only for faculty with appointments in units which the College administers to advise the dean on these matters. If approved by the Faculty Assembly, the amendments will be subject to a referendum of all voting faculty before being forwarded to the president for approval.

December 11, 2002 TALLAHASSEE Florida State University moved a step closer Tuesday to finding out who will replace Talbot "Sandy" D'Alemberte as its president when a search committee narrowed the list of finalists to three. The short list includes former Florida House Speaker T.K. Wetherell, former Ohio State and University of Wyoming president Edward Jennings, and Susan Prager, a law professor at UCLA. The panel eliminated Robert V. Smith, provost and vice chancellor at the University of Arkansas, and University of Iowa provost Jon Whitmore. The candidates will return to Tallahassee for extensive campus visits next week. The search panel will then make a recommendation to the Florida State board of trustees, which will recommend its choice to the Florida Board of Education. Wetherell, 56, a Florida State graduate, enjoys strong support in the Legislature and among many alumni. Until recently he was a business partner with John Thrasher, the chairman of the selection committee.

    University of Iowa
UI Health Care News: Week of December 3, 2001
The University of Iowa is launching a
search for a new dean for the College of Medicine.
On Tuesday UI President Mary Sue Coleman announced that Robert P. Kelch, M.D., will be stepping down as Dean of the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He retains his position as Vice President for Statewide Health Services. There will not be an interim dean appointed; Kelch will continue to serve until a new dean is selected. The search for the new dean of the College of Medicine will proceed in tandem with the search for a new Director and CEO of UI Hospitals and Clinics, although that position may be filled sooner because that effort has already begun. As Vice President for Statewide Health Services, Kelch will initiate those searches in consultation with Provost Jon Whitmore, President Coleman, and others. "We are confident that the Deanship of our College of Medicine and the directorship of UI Hospitals and Clinics will be attractive positions," Coleman said. "The partnership between the College and UI Hospitals and Clinics in the form of UI Health Care has become a nationwide model for academic medical centers. The College's research enterprise continues to grow both in terms of external funding and in terms of the significance and scope of discoveries being made by faculty and staff. Just as important, the College's curriculum and its physical facilities are being modernized."

April 5, 2002 Dear Economics Department Graduate: I am pleased to be writing to you of our accomplishments and news for the past year. While the past year has been very challenging in many ways, it has also been a rewarding one for the Department of Economics at Iowa. Our new arrivals in the department have settled in nicely. Garland Durham , a new assistant professor, is teaching undergraduate business statistics and applied econometrics in the graduate program. He has been active with John Geweke and Chuck Whiteman in organizing a reading group in financial econometrics. Matthew Mitchell , another new assistant professor, comes to us from the University of Minnesota, where he had taught for three years. Matt is currently teaching in the Ph.D. program, and is doing research on industry dynamics, technological innovation, and patents. B. Ravikumar, who returned to Iowa from Penn State in January, remains a key contributor in departmental seminars. Ravi’s current research addresses issues in education, growth, and dynamic contracts. John Geweke , our current Graduate Director, has instituted some key changes in our Ph.D. program, designed to increase the value-added of our program for the students, and particularly to

jon provost. jon provost is a national treasure. By the time jon provostwas eighteen, he'd worked in film and television for fifteen years.
    http://www.jonprovost.com/bio.htm
JON PROVOST Jon Provost is a national treasure. The check shirt and jeans he wore for seven years as Timmy on television's beloved "Lassie" hang in The Smithsonian next to Archie Bunker's chair. A sought-after celebrity guest, recently he appeared at the Sun Fest, a five-day pop music event that drew 400,000 people to Palm Beach, Florida. At his personal appearance, Jon signed 500 autographs in three hours that's 2.4 per minute! clear evidence that he touched the hearts of millions and continues to do just that today on cable television.
Jon was already a seasoned professional when he won the role of Timmy at age seven. He was barely three when cast as Jane Wyman and Sterling Hayden 's son in "So Big".
During his career as a child actor and teen heart throb, he worked with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood: Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby in "The Country Girl", Natalie Wood and Robert Redford in "This Property is Condemned", Rod Steiger and Anita Ekberg in "Back From Eternity"
