Ideas for getting Boys to Read - James Moloney
The following is taken from my book "Boys and Books" (ABC Books, 2000)
The list at the end is also from the book. It is one of 14 lists supplied to help parents and teachers.
What boys DO like - a brave appraisal
To answer a question such as "What DO boys like to read?" is almost impossible. All manner of conflicting generalisations get in the way. For example, are we talking about willing readers or reluctant readers. Are we looking for books a boy will read by himself or books to read to a boy. By way of introducing this section, I will blaze ahead regardless with a few point distilled from my years as a librarian in an all boys school. More detailed consideration and practical assessments of what we parents (and teacher) can do will follow. * It is a mistake to believe that boys in general and reluctant readers in particular, do not like fiction. It is often the type of fiction presented to them that is the source of their rejection. On the whole, boys enjoy books which place action ahead of emotion and where what the characters do is more important that what the characters think or feel. Hence, the apparent preference for the action novel. These are the equivalent of thrillers and detective stories in adult reading matter. They often come in series to help marketing * Boys tend to like books which match their image of themselves. They want to be able to identify themselves and what they would like to be and do. This is why books about characters engaged in sport have always held at least an initial attraction for boys.

His father worked for fifty years at a glass factory, and his mother left school at fourteen to work in a laundry; neither attended school beyond the eighth grade. While in high school in 1943 Wright suffered a nervous breakdown and missed a year of school. When he graduated in 1946, a year late, he joined the army and was stationed in Japan during the American occupation. He then attended Kenyon College on the G.I. Bill, and studied under John Crowe Ransom . He graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1952, then married another Martins Ferry native, Liberty Kardules. The two traveled to Austria, where, on a Fulbright Fellowship, Wright studied the works of Theodor Storm and Georg Trakl at the University of Vienna. He returned to the U.S. and earned master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Washington, studying with Theodore Roethke and Stanley Kunitz . He went on to teach at The University of Minnesota, Macalester College, and New York City's Hunter College.

    Dear visitor,
Welcome to my domain website. I hope you'll stick around for a while. By way of introducing myself it may suffice to say I'm a Poet. As a shy and retiring adolescent, I started writing poems; tedious unoriginal stuff about how depressing everything was, how nobody loved me and all the usual teenage angst. But then it was the eighties and except from some fine new wave music, all there was to talk about was unemployment, racism and nuclear holocaust; the three mandatory topics of any social sciences discussion.
Lateron, I first sent a poem to a magazine called 'First Time', run from Hastings by Josephine Austin. She encouraged me to keep on with the poetry writing and even invited me to perform at the Hastings Poetry Festival. At that time, having had only one poem published, I thought better of it. But in due time more and more publications followed, both in print and on-line magazines. The first time I was ever paid for a poem was when 'Famous Reporter', a poetry magazine from Tasmania sent me two International Reply Coupons for services rendered. Not exactly Harry Potter money but it was nice none-the-less. In 1997, a haiku I'd written was runner-up in 'Still' Magazine's annual Haiku Award.
Around that time I was still living in Holland and also scribbling away in Dutch. A semi-moving poem was put on display in the Gouda Resistance Museum as part of a exhibition of remembrance about World War II. A nocturnal lyrical poem was read on Dutch national radio during an all night broadcast featuring music and literature with an after dark theme.

HOME ART EDUCATION GREAT ARTISTS IN HISTORY - JAMES McNEILL WHISTLER James McNeill Whistler (1834 - 1903) 'As music is the poetry of sound, so is painting the poetry of sight . . .' IMPORTANT DATES James Abbot McNeill Whistler was born in America, yet he spent much of his life abroad. Early years were spent in Russia and then in London, only moving back to America with his family out of necessity when his father died of cholera. While a child in Russia, Whistler had attended drawing classes, but it wasn't until 1855 after dropping out of West Point Military Academy that he embarked on an artistic career. He moved back to Europe from America, settling in Paris. This was the beginning of a lifetime commitment to art. He quickly made his presence felt due to his flamboyant, eccentric ways. He would go about Paris wearing a straw hat, a white suit, highly polished black patent leather shoes and a monocle. While in France Gustave Courbet, the Realist painter, was an early influence on his art. He then moved to London in 1859 where he discovered, and made etchings of, what was to be one of his favourite subjects, the River Thames. In London he met Joanna Heffernan, a captivating red-head. She modelled for him and was his companion for the following seven years. Joanna is seen in the controversial

August 2002 Well, summer is winding down and fall will soon be here! I've been out of touch for so long that some of you may have been convinced I dropped off the planet not so, I assure you. Nor have I given up writing. Unfortunately, life this last year has been rather crazy. Major neurological problems that involved my hands and arms kept me away from the keyboard and prevented me from finishing my latest project. After many long, frustrating months of trying to figure out what was wrong, a surgery that failed to bring about any improvement (but thankfully did no harm either!), I'm thrilled to report I'm back on track again and working to finish my next book . . . A PERFECT BRIDE is the first of a wonderfully romantic trilogy set in Regency London. While I love writing about knights and damsels, I'm having a blast revisiting Regency England and the world of the Ton. In this series, you'll meet the Sterling family. Sebastian, Earl of Thurston, is the eldest, followed by Justin, and lastly, their sister Julianna. Right now Sebastian has his hands full with Devon St. James, the beauty in rags his brother rescued from London's poorest slum and brought into their house.. I hope you'll be patient while I finish Sebastian and Devon's story. Publication date is set for the latter half of 2003, but I think this series will be worth the wait! I promise lots of heart-stopping emotion and some unexpected laughter as well.

July 9, 2002 By Adam Lucas Tar Heel Monthly Somewhere, there are some hanging chads waiting to be counted. All precincts must not have reported. Maybe there is a flaw in a voting machine. Those are the only possible explanations for why, when the Basketball Hall of Fame's 2002 class is inducted, James Worthy will not be in attendance. There will be a Carolina presence, as Larry Brown-who has asked Dean Smith to introduce him-will join the Hall. But until Worthy is enshrined in Springfield, the Hall's roster is not fully complete. Worthy was selected as one of the NBA's 50 greatest players of all time in 1996. He is the only member of that illustrious group who is eligible for the Hall of Fame who has not been inducted.
