On behalf of IMCINE (the state-funded Mexican Film Institute created in 1983) and its primary beneficiaries and administrators, Ripstein appealed to the president: "A country without film is a sad country." This less than positive view of Mexico today is also held by other major players in that country's artfilm world, who are convinced, as is Ripstein, that without state subsidies the national art cinema would not exist. (Historically, Mexico's film industry has depended on state protection and promotion since the early 1930s.)

Ripstein ya había sido premiado anteriormente en este certamen por El lugar sin límites El imperio de la fortuna (1986) y Principio y fin (1993). En esta ocasión se mostró especialmente halagado: "estoy muy emocionado. Es formidable que mi película sobre lo absurdo de la vida logre esta recompensa". La perdición de los hombres es una comedia con tres escenarios: el de un crimen, el de un velatorio y el de un partido de béisbol. En este largometraje, dos hombres esperan en el camino a otro para darle una paliza hasta matarlo y dos mujeres se pelean por la propiedad del muerto. El cine de Ripstein siempre ha sido valorado en Europa, donde se ha catalogado como fresco y a la vez sórdido, dotado de una influencia buñueliana, con el surrealismo como contenido. Sin embargo, el reconocimiento y el éxito le han llegado tarde y fuera de su país, por eso Arturo Ripstein no duda ni un momento en expresar su decepción.
