Ebenezer Curtis was the first white man to settle in Curtis Township. Mr. Curtis came here from Maine, May 1867 with his family consisting of three daughters and one son. The son died in later years. Mr. Curtis was of English descent. He was a strong able bodied man able to stand the hardships of pioneer life. He would often walk to Tawas, which is about thirty miles from here, where he would get supplies. He first got his mail from Tawas, later from Potts, what we now call McKinley, then from South Branch. In 1900 a post office was established in Curtisville, by Joseph Bell. Mr. Curtis' first neighbor was John Calegrove who lived near McKinley. He came here in September of the same year, also from Maine. Marvin Wilber lived near the creek which now bears his name, Richard Cage lived on what we now call the Tanner Farm, owned by the heirs of Louise M. Gates. Caleb Smith lived two miles south of Mr. Curtis on the creek which bears his name. Mr. Curtis was a great lumberman. He was a noted axeman and at one time was the best around here, though many men were noted axemen. He had charge of many lumber camps for Moore and Alger, also Beech and Mansfield.

The area is easily accessible by car. Rivers and streams within the Curtis Creek area support a variety of fishing opportunities including backcountry trout fishing on Newberry Creek to more accessible stream fishing on Curtis Creek proper.
Curtis Creek
Curtis Creek (above Newberry Creek) is managed under the NCWRC’s Wild Trout regulations. Upper portions of Curtis Creek are steeper and flow through steep, rough terrain. Although FS 482 follows it to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the road is often at the top of some very steep mountainsides. It does, however, cross the River several times before reaching the Parkway. Species Present rainbow trout (wild), occasional brook and brown trout (wild). Seasons Curtis Creek is open to fishing year-round. These waters may be fished with artificial lures having one single hook. Four trout at least 7 inches long may be harvested per angler per day.

    10.1 INTRODUCTION
Organic matter in natural waters represents a continuous size spectrum, beginning with free small molecules, macromolecules and aggregates and ending with organisms. By arbitrary definition, the fraction retained on a filter with a pore size of 0.5 to 1.0 m is defined as particulate matter. The upper limit of particulate matter is determined by the sampling device used, and will be around a few millimetres. In rivers, particulate organic matter (POM) can originate from autochthonous production of phytoplankton and from allochthonous sources like soils, waste water and atmosphere. It can also be produced in situ from dissolved organic matter by physico-chemical and biological processes. The particulate organic matter is subjected to different processes in the fluvial, estuarine and coastal marine environment. These processes such as mineralization, disaggregation and sedimentation determine its role, behaviour and fate in the aquatic ecosystem. Available information on these sources and processes is mostly qualitative in nature. In order to understand the role of POM in the aquatic ecosystem information is required on the quantities involved.

According to curtis, in his book, Fishing the Miramichi, the word Miramichi is aMontagnais (a native people of Many great rivers are fully of the wilderness.
    http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/greatrivers/miramichi/
"The world's greatest Atlantic salmon river," writes Wayne Curtis of the Miramichi River in Currents in the Stream. A sweeping statement, perhaps suspect by having been made by a native son. The evidence however supports the superlative. No other river sees as many angler days, produced as many Atlantic salon, or offers such a length of fishable water.
According to Curtis, in his book, Fishing the Miramichi, the word Miramichi is a Montagnais (a native people of Quebec province) word for "Micmac land". The Micmacs (local aboriginal people) called the river Lust-a-gooch-cheech or Little Restigouch (another famous New Brunswick salmon river). Why the Montagnais word stuck, except perhaps that it was easier to pronounce and write, is a mystery. [See map click here
Many great rivers are fully of the wilderness. Not so the Miramichi. Much of its lower valley has been inhabited for three centuries. The valley's people are as important to the river's story as the great silver fish which brought it angling fame.
The Miramichi is actually a river system located in New Brunswick, one of Canada's east coast provinces. To be precise, which almost no one ever is, the Miramichi only exists for a few miles after its two main components, the Main Southwest Miramichi and the Northwest Miramichi, join near Miramichi City (formerly the towns of Newcastle and Chatham). From there the river flows to a rendezvous with Miramichi Bay and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. At it's mouth it is nearly a mile wide. The first European to comprehend the full extent of the system was the young French engineer/cartographer, Batiste Louis Franquelin, who mapped the country in 1686. Regardless, most people speak of the Main Southwest as if it were the Miramichi and treat the Northwest as one of its tributaries, so I will follow this convention.

British Stuntman claims parachute world record On the morning of Thursday 14 February 2002, in Southern Spain, Nottingham-based Curtis Rivers (31) and London-based balloon pilot Charlie Limon (35) ascended to a height of 25,000 feet in a hot air balloon. In severe sub-zero temperatures, operating in a near oxygen free atmosphere, Curtis Rivers exited the balloon basket, deployed his parachute and began his descent to earth. During the stunt, code-named Operation Hawk, Curtis is confident he has broken the record for the longest duration parachute flight. At the moment this is an unofficial record and is awaiting ratification. The morning of 14 February 2002 started early. Before dawn, the team headed out to the launch site at Pozoblanco, Andalucia, Spain, where they started by taking measurements of the wind speed at ground level. The combination of this information and that gleaned from the Met. Office at the same time gave the "Green Light" to proceed with the launch. They unpacked the hot-air balloon and commenced inflation. The pilot, Charlie Limon, oversaw the initial stages before handing over to the Operation Hawk ground crew.
