Turning Bronte's 'Jane Eyre' into a musical
By MICHAEL KUCHWARA
AP Drama Writer TORONTO (AP) The best thing about "Jane Eyre," the novel, is the best thing about "Jane Eyre,"the musical: the high-octane romance between its plain but persistent title character and Edward Rochester, the dark, brooding master of Thornfield Hall.
Charlotte Bronte's classic tale encompasses a lot more, of course, and adapter-director John Caird dutifully has incorporated an amazing amount of the book into his exhausting three-hour musical, which is receiving its world premiere at the Royal Alexandra Theater.
Caird is an expert at condensation. Among his other theater projects were the co-direction of the mammoth "Les Miserables" and "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby." Yet "Jane Eyre" eventually proves plodding, weighed down not by its sturdy story but by its undistinguished songs.
The score by Paul Gordon unspools like thread, a continuous strand of music and lyrics that rarely rises above the efficient. The serious numbers are emotional without being affecting; the rare comic tunes, most of them for Rochester's fussbudget housekeeper Mrs. Fairfax, are obvious.
Many of the techniques that Caird employed in "Les Miserables" and "Nicholas Nickleby" have found their way into "Jane Eyre."

LUCKY IN THE RAIN is a nostalgic trip down memory lane for those folks who remember the songs and times in 1927. This play takes place in Paris at a small newspaper company. There are many subplots going on here...but basically its a romantic story line.. Boy reporter (Patrick Wilson) falls in love with girl reporter(Marla Schaffel). In addition fellow reporter Zach(Scott Wise) is the roving reporter. The songs are vintage 1920's and the costumes, set design are authentic looking. What did I see? I saw many talented dancers/singers/actors who gave me an entertaining night out! The play is fast-paced (with many subplots going on), but has your attention for the 2 hour show.

A CurtainUp Review Jane Eyre, The Musical
Marla Schaffel and James Barbour (Joan Marcus) Jane Eyre. What's all this got to do with Jane Eyre, the Musical. To paraphrase, Jane "Reader I liked it." Paul Gordon score is lyrical and often quite moving. Though some may want to write it off as easy listening, too heavily reprised pop music, the sound is musical theater that will hold up after several replays of the CD. It has for me! Topping the show's considerable assets are the two leads. Marla Schaffel is a splendid, still-waters-run-deep Jane who has the voice of a true Broadway musical star. James Barbour is a handsome, Byronic Edward Rochester who more than matches Schaffel's acting and singing skills. In fact, as good as Ms. Schaffel is, the narrative doesn't really catch fire until she meets her destiny at Rochester's estate, Thornfield Hall, and Barbour explodes onto the stage. Joan Fontaine Some Eyre purists and those unfamiliar with the book's psychological underpinnings might nevertheless complain that Schaffel is too pretty. These quibblers should bear in mind that the most touted of the story's numerous film adaptations starred the beautiful Joan Fontaine (who along with her also lovely sister Olivia De Havilland, specialized in mousy ladies). The same is true for the leading man. Rochester was not handsome and at thirty-eight, considerably older than Jane, but hardly all that much older. Orson Welles, like James Barbour, was definitely handsome and probably about the same age.

Pros
Beautiful and haunting score, incredible cast, fantastic transition from novel to stage
Cons
None The Bottom Line Jane Eyre is a great novel and an outstanding musical. Marla Schaffel and James Barbour's performances are breathtaking. Amazing lighting! Phenomenal cast! Haunting and beautiful music! Don't miss it! Full Review Many stories have been transferred from novel to blockbuster stage musical productions. Recent notables include Phantom of the Opera, Scarlet Pimpernel, Jekyll and Hyde and Les Miserable. I have loved them all but none have been as true to the book as Jane Eyre. True they could not fit everything in but I hadn't read the book in seven years and I knew that many of the lines came right from the source text. As for the cast, Marla Schaffel IS Jane Eyre. She plays the role with youth, intelligence and spirit. She rarely leaves the stage the entire show and even when Jane is hiding in the shadows you can sense she is there. Her voice soars through this extraordinary score and she will surely get Tony nominations for her role.

and Marla Schaffel
To find out more about this world premier production of Let Me Sing , please visit charlotterep.org We will surprise you. Come back soon to see how... After the Sunday preview show, we were able to meet with Michael Bush, Michael Aman, and Joel Silberman, the creators of Let Me Sing , as well as actress Marla Schaffel. Let Me Sing is about the evolution of American music and American attitudes, which began to coalesce at the beginning of the twentieth century. In a previous interview , you’ve explained the nascence of this play. We’d like to talk about how you three creators began to work on it once the idea was born. MB: The truth is, I had probably said it to two years of classes: that something was bubbling around in my brain, and it was either a book or a show. Michael (Aman) was taking my class. MA: I was getting a degree in dramaturgy at Brooklyn College. He said to me, after class one day, "I'm thinking of turning this into a musical about the history of musicals." I asked to work on it as a dramaturg, and do the research that I thought would be required. He said to put a list of songs that I thought would be in this show, and gave me another assignment to do Irving Berlin alone. MB: The first idea was that, if I just did the songs in a particular order, they would tell a story. So we were making that list of songs when Joel happened to call one day.
