The goal of this work is to be able to present in easily understood but convincing format the improved distributions to both target and normal tissue that will result from the spot-scanning method of proton radiotherapy. The aim of the work is to identify those clinical indications in which a definitive difference can be shown between the efficacy of proton radiotherapy and the routinely available photon therapy techniques, compare proton dose distributions with state-of-the-art photon planning methods, and assess the relative merits of spot scanning methods of proton beam delivery with the more conventional passive-scattering method of proton delivery.

Dear Dr Macri, I have heard rumors that the Management of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, the Italian main Institute for High Energy Physics) decided to have researchers clock in/out from the 1st of July 1998. This is a very surprinsing decision, kwnowing for a fact that producitivity and originality in scientific and technical areas can not be measured by the amount of time spent at work. As an example, PSI, the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland (1000 people doing research) had a clock in/clock out system for while, and abandonned it after a few years. The cost of the such systems can be as high as a million of $ / year for a large institutions, and the benefit is zero. Another example, is ABB, a large multinational compagny, avoided the cost of such a system. A clock in/out system is merely useful in order to protect some workers from being exploited. To return to the current issue's index Tenants fight demolition Paul Scherrer denounces attack on Pittsburgh public housing By Alden Long L AST MONTH Paul Scherrer, the Socialist Equality Party candidate for Congress in Pittsburgh, spoke on the city's west side before a meeting of public housing tenants who are fighting plans to demolish their complex. On July 31 the Pittsburgh Housing Authority announced it would tear down Broadhead Manor, where 247 families live. The residents were given one month to vacate. Angry tenants shouted down Housing Director Stanley Lowe when he came to deliver the eviction ultimatum that night. Scherrer was invited to address the residents at a meeting the following night. Paul Scherrer, a telephone worker at Bell Atlantic, has been certified by Pennsylvania election authorities to appear on the ballot in November as the Socialist Equality Party candidate for the 14th Congressional District, which represents Pittsburgh and surrounding suburbs. Over 4,800 signatures, well above the 2,107 requirement, were submitted to place him on the ballot. He will be listed as the representative of the Socialist Equality Party and will be the only candidate challenging the Democrats and Republicans in the district. Democratic administration When he spoke before 150 Broadhead Manor tenants last month, Scherrer said, "I condemn the Democratic Murphy administration and Housing Director Stanley Lowe for their plans to demolish Broadhead Manor, rob you of $23 million in remodeling money, and throw you out of homes that some of you have lived in for 20 or 30 years."

PSI have of course interest in creating new research cooperations with other institutes on subjects where neutron scattering can help. Especially small angle neutron scattering can be very useful for analysing nanostructured materials, structural and magnetic properties. THE CURRENT TOPICS Dr. Van Swygenhoven and her colleagues are presently involved in are: Structural and magnetic properties of bulk nanophase materials synthesised by inert-gas condensation. The magnetic properties are investigated by magnetic Small Angle Neutron Scattering, Muon Spin Rotation and Squid Magnetization measurements. Structural and electronic characterisation of nanophase transition metals synthesised by inert-gas condensation. The electronic properties are measured by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Elastic and plastic behaviour of bulk nanophase metals and intermetallics. The study contains experimental work on nanophase samples synthesised by inert gas condensation and large scale molecular dynamics computer simulations performed on the Cray-T3D-Lausanne.
