Jean Seberg
"Movie Magazine International" Tribute
(Air Date: Week Of 3/13/96)
By Monica Sullivan
In "From The Journals Of Jean Seberg", Mark Rappaport's fictitious approach to her life, a former babysitting charge who grew up around the corner from Seberg tells the story of a sensitive small town girl driven to professional and personal despair. Mary Beth Hurt, now 47, plays the Jean Seberg who might have been had she overcome the tragedy of her life with Rappaport's blessed sense of irony. The film traces the work of such contemporaries as Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave who achieved greater fame and recognition than Seberg and were better protected emotionally during their days of political activism. The fragile Seberg tried to kill herself annually on the anniversary of her baby daughter's death, after being hounded by the FBI who leaked false rumours that the premature infant had been fathered by a Black Panther. In "From The Journals of Jean Seberg", now playing at art houses across the country, Rappaport tells an immensely sad story with both effective detail and compassionate honesty.

Jean Seberg
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Jean Seberg November 13 September 8 ) was an American actress born in Marshalltown, Iowa USA who spent an important part of her career in France She was discovered by Otto Preminger , who directed her in her first two motion pictures. She would go on to star in Hollywood films as well as in France where she lived in Paris with her first husband, attorney Francois Moreuil. She became even more of an icon from her roles in numerous French films and the tragedy of her turbulent life. Among her roles, she co-starred with Jean-Paul Belmondo in Jean-Luc Godard 's classic work of New Wave cinema

JEAN SEBERG American Actress
by Fosco Dubini Jean Seberg ‚ American Actress confronts the highly precise, typed image of the actress (a Hollywood star before becoming French New Wave muse) with the individual she was private ‚ up to her suicide in 1979. Then the film takes stock of the existential abyss that open to someone who has been so greatly determined by the image. Using film clips, private interviews, press photos and phone conversations taped by the FBI, this filmed biography attempts a chronological review of the career of Jean Seberg with special attention to each of the documents used, keenly pointing out the tragedy of a woman, who caught in the cogwheels of the motion picture industry, could no longer tell fiction and reality apart. Bonjour Tristesse
Moment to Moment
A Fine Madness
Her films include as many French movies as American ones, and, hence I had long been thinking that she had to be a French actress. But, of course, she is a genuine American. Her image seems to have been fixed with her earlier two movies, namely Cecile in "Bonjour Tristesse"(1958) and Patricia in that French derector Jean-Luc Godard's feature movie debut "Breathless"(1960), a kind of tomboy girl with short hair having a tinge of such sort of adolescent innocence as whatever she has done is permitted because of her youthness. Unfortunately, she was found dead in 1979 of an overdose of barbiturates, a probable suicide. MAIN FILMS

In dreams I walk with you. In dreams I talk to you...
One afternoon I ran into Schwab's drugstore to make a call and saw Jean Seberg at the counter. I told her we hadn't met, but that I'd thought we'd been set to do a picture in Paris. She said she knew I'd been in ParisFrançoise Sagan had told her- and Jean was very sorry I'd had to "experience the problems with that project." She said, "It was doomed from the start, and I was advised not to get involved. The producer actually went around telling everybody I'd signed to do the darned thing, while he was trying to finagle more money, I'm sure." She said she liked Brian Russell. He had seemed a sincere fellow, though sort of "ridden under" by the producer. I'd never met Tiedman, I told her, and she said he was a dreadful little man who wore crepe-soled shoes and a serge suit, and who'd "probably sell his mother's heart for a blue-plate special . . ." Jean was very frank and outgoing, cheerful and even funny. Her hair was still as short as Joan of Arc's, and she wore a small gold identification bracelet. She was eating one half of a tuna sandwich and said if I was hungry I could have the other half. "It's awful to waste good food," she said. "I can't order half a sandwich, and it always makes me feel so guilty, or wasteful- one of the two, I don't know which it is... maybe both wasteful and guilty ..."We talked about Josh Logan and Paris, and about

The public perceived the actress as a beautiful, troubled, empty vessel into which various men and male groups poured their often misogynist obsessions.
Her transition from prestige pictures like Bonjour Tristesse to Eurotrash epics like her husband Romain Gary's Birds in Peru and empty-headed blockbusters like Airport did nothing to alter the public perception of Seberg as a beautiful, troubled, "empty vessel" into which various men and male groups poured their often misogynist obsessions. BY GARY MORRIS
Jean Seberg was always more icon than actress. From her disastrous appearance as the title character in Preminger's Saint Joan (1958), to Godard's immortalizing of her face in Breathless , to her status as fashion maven in the 1960s , to her extracurricular work with the Black Panthers, Seberg's acting career seemed secondary to her cultural presence from the beginning. Her transition from prestige pictures like Bonjour Tristesse to Eurotrash epics like her husband Romain Gary's Birds in Peru and empty-headed blockbusters like Airport Writer-director Mark Rappaport, familiar from 1992's Rock Hudson's Home Movies , has devised an ingenious strategy for dealing with this complex character in From the Journals of Jean Seberg The format of the film is loosely chronological, starting with Seberg's appearance in

The Smearing of Jean Seberg
This is another example of the tactics used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to stifle legitimate dissent in Hollywood. Following my going public about the inconsistancies I found in the Vincent Foster affair, I was subjected to similar treatment. Jean Seberg, a well known actress in the 60s, became pregnant and the FBI sent out letters to the gossip columnists identifying the baby's father as a Black Panther, in order to cheapen Seberg's image. The scans below are of the official FBI letter from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. asking permission for the scam. Permission was granted, but with the suggestion that the smear be delayed until Jean Seberg's pregnancy was in a very obvious condition. Click for full size picture of the letter granting permission for the smearing of Jean Seberg The story was then run by Los Angeles Times propagandist Joyce Haber.
