Volume 38, No. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS POMONA COLLEGE WEB
Reprinted from the July 1966 issue of Pomona Today. Conductor Robert Shaw
From Fred Waring to the Atlanta Symphony, via the San Diego and Cleveland Orchestras and, of course, the world-famous Robert Shaw Chorale Being "discovered" on the campus of Pomona College by a visiting impresario is undoubtedly the dream of many music and drama students as they strut and fret their hour upon the stage in undergraduate productions, though very rarely does the dream come true. But Robert Shaw '38 began his distinguished career in just that way, although he hadn't exactly dreamed about itand in fact came close to rejecting the opportunity altogether. That year Fred Waring came to the Pomona campus for the filming of the musical "Variety Show." He watched Shaw conduct the Glee Club, and was so impressed that he immediately offered him a job involving full charge of the Waring Glee Club. Shaw was reluctant to give up his divinity studies and declined Waring's offer, but he was interested enough to write the bandleader later asking for a summer job. Waring sent him $150 for the trip to New York, and Shaw set off (candidly returning most of the trip allowance to Waring upon his arrival). The work with Waring proved so interesting that Shaw decided not to return to Pomona in the fall, and he was soon busily engaged preparing five radio shows a week.

OECD's Indicators for the Assessment of Telecommunications Competition
The OECD has declassified and made available its Indicators for the assessment of telecommunications competition (PDF)
  • "Intensified competition in OECD countries’ telecommunications sectors calls for regulations proportionate to the level of competition in the market. If regulators consider there is full-fledged competition in a telecommunications market, they should lift regulatory interventions existing in the relevant market. Therefore, regulators need a yardstick that measures the true level and scope of competition. Regulators have not yet fully developed indicators for the assessment of telecommunications competition and thus have not reached a consensus on this issue. This report explores the concept of effective competition and the definition of a relevant market, and suggests appropriate indicators and parameters for the evaluation of competitiveness in the telecommunications markets."

Robert Shaw (Conductor) Born: April 30, 1916 – Red Bluff, California, USA
Died: January 25, 1999 – New Haven, USA
In his long career, which spanned six decades and four cities, Shaw transformed choral conducting into an art and nearly single-handedly raised its standards to a new level. For more than half a century he set the standard of excellence for choral music, enjoying a status of patriarch of vocal musical interpretation in the USA.
Robert (Lawson) Shaw came from a clerical family. His father and grandfather were ministers. More importantly, perhaps, his mother sang in church choirs. In school, his serious interests were in philosophy, literature, and religion, but at Pomona College he did join the glee club. Then, in a chain of events right out of a Warner Brothers backstage musical, Shaw was asked to take over the choir for an ailing faculty leader the same year that Fred Waring happened to be making a film on the campus. Waring was impressed, asked him to go to New York to develop a glee club for him, and a star conductor was born.
His first major honor came as early as 1943 from the National Association of Composers and Conductors which cited him as "America's greatest choral conductor."

ROBERT SHAW
New Zealand
Hi, I'm Robert Shaw. Welcome to my home page. I am proud to live in Porirua City, which is in the Wellington Region. Our city is diverse, progressive and concerned to enhance the natural environment.
Education sector
I'm a senior lecturer in business management at the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. My research interests relate to local government and business strategy.
The Open Polytechnic is a distance learning education provider with many degree and diploma courses.
The Open Polytechnic began life as a government institution and became an independent business responsible for its own marketing, and product development. For a few years I was a member of the governing Council. Today, the polytechnic makes good profits and wins overseas contracts.
For managers in both government and private organisations, I provide a training course entitled the "Executive Decision-Making Skills Course".
Until 1999, I taught courses in the School of Computing at the Whitireia Community Polytechnic. These courses were entitled "Business Applications", and "Ethics and Professionalism". This polytechnic has won awards for the quality of its administration!
Aotea College is a multicultural secondary school with about 906 students and 56 teachers. It is a mirror of New Zealand society. In April 2001, the parents elected me, and 4 others, to the school's governing board. The school has a strong academic focus that I support.

care of Boston Athenaeum. Robert Gould Shaw is best remembered in history as the brave colonel who led the 54th Massachusetts in their fearless charge at Fort Wagner. But what makes him an extraordinary individual lies beyond this noble deed. In what would be a few months with the regiment, Shaw's remarkable personal growth found him transformed from "an ordinary mortal" to a compassionate and selfless leader who "laid down his life" for his men and "for a race."
