American Astronaut Born in East Derry, New Hampshire Nov. 18, 1923 He developed an interest in airplanes at a young age, enjoying building model airplanes and hanging around the local airport He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1944. He served on a destroyer during World War II after which he took flight training and became a Navy test pilot logging over 8000 hours of flight time. In 1959, he was named one of the first seven Mercury astronauts. On May 5, 1961, he became the first American launched into space. Shepard rode in the tiny Freedom 7 capsule on the historic sub-orbital flight to an altitude of 115 miles and 303 miles down range reaching a top speed of 5,180 miles per hour. 15 minutes later he landed in the Atlantic Ocean. Upon his return to the earth, he touched down only 160 feet (half of a football field) from the target point in the ocean. Shepard served (1963-69, 1971-74) as chief of the astronaut office for N.A.S.A. (National Aeronautics Space Administration) at the Johnson Space Center. In 1974, he retired from the Navy as a Rear Admiral and from NASA.

A few of the basic flight problems included: The development of an automatic escape system, vehicle control during insertion, behavior of space systems, evaluation of pilots capabilities in space, in flight monitoring, retrofire and reentry maneuvers and landing and recovery. The name "Freedom Seven" was Alan Shepard's choice. "Freedom" because it was patriotic and "Seven" because it was the seventh Mercury capsule produced. It also represented the seven Mercury astronauts. To help relieve any tension Shepard might have built up before his flight, Glenn pasted a little sign on the spacecraft instrument panel, reading "No handball playing here." This bit of levity hearkened back to their training days. At T-15 minutes it was necessary to hold the count again to make a final check of the real-time trajectory computer. A small electrical part had a problem and this resulted in an hour and twenty six minute delay. Shepard was on top of the Redstone for so long now that he had to urinate. "Gordo!" he said, talking to Gordon Cooper, a fellow Mercury Seven astronaut and principal prelaunch communicator. "Go, Alan." "Man, I got to pee." "You what?" "You heard me. I've got to pee. I've been up here forever."

After gaining fame and glory as America's first man in space in 1961, Shepard was grounded by an inner ear disorder in 1963. The ailment kept him on the sidelines while his fellow astronauts made history in the Gemini and Apollo programs. Even though Shepard attained power and wealth besides serving as the chief astronaut, Shepard amassed a small fortune from a variety of business ventures he wanted nothing more than to prove himself by making another space mission. The flight took place on May 5, 1961 and lasted for a little over 15 minutes. It was a sub-orbital flight, launched on a Redstone rocket from Pad 5, Cape Canavarel. The touchdown occurred at 08:37:10 GMT, February 5, within 50m (160 ft) ofthe target point in the Fra Mauro highlands. The first extravehicularactivity (EVA) began 5 hr 23 min after touchdown. A color television camera mounted on the descent stage provided live coverageof the descent of both astronauts to the lunar surface. The crew deployed theU.S. flag and the solar-wind composition experiment, erected the S-bandantenna, and off-loaded the modularized equipment transporter (MET), laserranging retroreflector (LRRR), and the Apollo lunar-surface experimentspackage (ALSEP). The second EVA was a planned extended geological traverse of Cone Crater. Allequipment required for the geological traverse, including the lunar portablemagnetometer (LPM), was loaded on the MET. Kwame Holman begins. KWAME HOLMAN: In 1959, Alan Shepard and six other men were chosen from a pool of 110 pilots who volunteered to go into space. NASA picked Shepard to guide its very first manned space flight. On May 5, 1961, Shepard became the first American in space. He flew for 15 minutes aboard the Mercury Freedom 7 Spacecraft and splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. In an interview years later the former Navy test pilot explained his desire to be an astronaut. ALAN SHEPARD: I think all those who volunteered and certainly all of those who ended up the finals like I did really sort of looked at it as an extension of what they're doing. See, as a test pilot you sort of keep flying bigger and better and faster and farther and higher, et cetera, et cetera. Alan Shepard, one of the Original Seven Mercury astronauts and the first American to travel in space has died. Shepard, 74, died Tuesday night at a hospital near Monterey, Calif., after a bout with leukemia. Shepard's historic 15-minute sub-orbital flight took place on May 5, 1961 from Cape Canaveral. He also walked on the moon as commander of Apollo 14 in 1971.
