The Roman Actor
A Revenge Tragedy by Philip Massinger. Directed by Sean Holmes with designs by Anthony Lamble, lighting by Wayne Dowdeswell and sound by Martin Slavin. Antony Sher plays 'Domitian', the tyrannical and insanely jealous Roman Emperor who wreaks havoc and bloody revenge as he discovers his wife's infidelity with Paris, the Roman Actor of the title. Written in 1604, and regarded as Massinger's finest play, The Roman Actor condemns tyranny and defends the then despised profession of acting. Massinger is considered to be one of the most powerful dramatists of his day. Amongst his many plays, most of which have been lost (with eight rumoured to have been destroyed by Lord Warbuton's cook who used them to line pie dishes) are The Maid of Honour The Virgin Martyr The Renegado and perhaps best known, A New Way to Pay Old Debts The Roman Actor was described by Massinger as being 'the most perfect birth of his Minerva.' Cast: David Acton as Philargus, Antony Byrne as Parthenius, Wayne Cater as Aesopus, Joe Dixon as Paris, the Roman Actor, Sean Hannaway as Stephanus, Michael Matus as Latinus, Keith Osborn as Lamia, Joshua Richards as Junius Rusticus, Antony Sher as Domitianus Caesar and Michael Thomas as Aretinus.

The Malcontent by John Marston. Directed by Dominic Cooke, designed by Robert Innes Hopkins, with lighting by Wayne Doweswell. The cast features Antony Sher (Giovanni Altofronto - Malevole), Sasha Behar (Bianca), Claire Benedict (Maquarelle), Paul Bhattacharjee (Celso), Joe Dixon (Mendoza), Amanda Drew (Aurelia), Geoffrey Freshwater (Bilioso), Colin McCormack (Pietro Iacomo), Michael Matus (Ferrardo). This tragic-comic satire is relocated to a Latin American Dictatorship in the '70s from Renaissance Genoa. The play was written in 1603 and exists in two editions, one of which gives the authorship to John Webster with augmentations by Marston. The malcontent of the title, Malevole, played by Antony Sher, is the banished Duke of Genoa who returns in disguise to his former court. With echoes of 'Hamlet 'and 'Measure for Measure', the Duke contrives, under the guise of a mad frame of mind, to speak the bitterest of home truths deriding aristocratic behaviour. Through intrigue and betrayal throughout the court, he eventually manages to regain his position as rightful ruler of Genoa, and his deposer and his cohorts are brought to justice.

1 June 1998: Terry Johnson directs the world premiere of his new play Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick which stars Antony Sher and opens at the RNT's Lyttelton Theatre on 10 September 1998 (previews from 4 September). With this latest play, Johnson completes a trilogy about sex and comedy, which includes Unsuitable Adults and Dead Funny . The trilogy, and the latest in particular, taps into the British comedy tradition exemplified in the Carry On film series, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of its first film this year. Filming is not as glamorous as it's cracked up to be. It's a miserable business if your caravan leaks, your co-star is a manic depressive, and those younger women aren't so young anymore. Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick takes some familiar faces and gets a bit more familiar still with them. Sidney, Kenneth and Barbara are about to take on the most challenging roles of their careers - themselves. Antony Sher plays 'Sidney'. Sher returns to the National following his Tony and Olivier Award-winning performance in Stanley ; other RNT credits include Uncle Vanya The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ai The Trial and True West . For the RSC, Sher's extensive work includes

Any of Marvin Rosenberg's four huge, scene-by-scene organized, and blessedly indexed books will save you phenomenal amounts of time. The Masks of King Lear The Masks of Macbeth The Masks of Othello and the recently released titanic The Masks of Hamlet each present a thorough scene-by-scene anatomy of the stage history of their respective plays; the "masks" are the different productions (full citations below).
A. Series
The Arden Shakespeare : For many years, the Ardens were the standard critical editions of Shakespeare, but they were at best sketchy when it came to stage history. The last ten years saw the birth of The New Cambridge Shakespeare and The Oxford Shakespeare, both of which come equipped with fine stage history introductions. Perhaps in response to these two new editions, Arden has begun to revise its own complete Shakespeare. This year saw the publication of three new Ardens: Henry V Antony and Cleopatra and Titus Andronicus , all with thorough stage history sections to their introductions. I have high hopes for the rest of the series.
The Folio Shakespeare : quirky little editions put out by The Folio Society in London around the 1950s. They almost always have stimulating introductions by famous directors and actors, as well as interesting illustrations. The

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH STYLE SHEET
A Guide to Citation and Documentation
The use of primary texts and secondary critical writing, and the proper acknowledgement of quotations and references, is a crucial part of essay writing. It is important when preparing an essay to take full and accurate notes of the texts and sources you are using, be these books, articles, websites or other resources; this information will be needed when you document your essay. In what follows we explain the form in which we would like you to provide the necessary information, asking you to use the 'Author-Date System', in which a list of Sources Cited is provided at the end of an essay to which cross-reference is made in the body of the essay. This Style Sheet is largely based on the MHRA Style Book
1 Layout of Quotations
1.1 Quotations will be of different lengths, varying from just one or two words or lines of poetry to much longer extracts. As a general rule, up to two lines of poetry or forty words of prose should be incorporated into the main text of the essay: Eliot's poem 'Preludes' features the following image of desolation: 'The showers beat/On broken blinds and chimney-pots' (1972, 15).

Hurrah for Sir Antony, the short, gay, tone deaf Jewish South African lad who came around the world to Rada to be told never to darken its audition room again and to pursue another career. Sher tells this with no bitterness. It's all added to the insecurity which has nagged this restless triply talented actor, writer and painter throughout his career. Until it got uncontrollable, cocaine blocked out his self-dislike. He's dealt with that, but not some unresolved problems with his late father, a Jewish Afrikaaner who slept through all his son's theatrical triumphs. Sher's theatre work is the autobiography's frame. His lucid descriptions of the roles and his thorough research for them will interest theatre obsessives and laity. It's well-written and delivered in a pleasant unassuming resting voice which will disappoint those who prefer actors to sound like performers.
