Farscape Actor profiles Anthony Simcoe The man under the D'Argo make-up Australian Anthony Simcoe is one of the original Farscape crew, having played the part of D’Argo since the first episode. It’s clear that he’s put a lot of himself into the character, including inventing the rumbling D’Argo voice. A graduate of Sydney’s National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA), Simcoe holds a specialised qualification in Actor Training, and lectures regularly for the NIDA. He has acted and directed extensively for theatre. Before Farscape he appeared in various films and television shows, including Aussie comedy hit The Castle, about a Sydney family prepared to fight to protect their beloved house. Other films credits include Mr Reliable and Chameleon, and he’s appeared in such TV series as Water Rats, BeastMaster and that Australian standard Home and Away. Part 1 What was interesting was I'd been auditioning for what was then called Space Chase, which became Farscape. For months and months and months I didn't realise I'd be wearing all these prosthetics, and it was only at the second-last audition I think Rockne O'Bannon flew down to Australia to show us some sketches of the characters and it was like "Whoa! Okay... I'm gonna be looking like that!" That's not what I wanted to, uh, do with the rest of my life. And then just looking at it, and then finding out that the Jim Henson Company were going to be doing it, I got really psyched about it, and, just fantastic because a career is a long time; I've been in this game a long time and it's just great to have this period in my life where I'm looking like this amazing creature. So I'm absolutely psyched to wear the make-up. Now that I am at work and looking at all these people around me, I'm thinking "Man, I'd rather be D'Argo than anyone else," 'cause it just looks cool and it's fun to put on the voice, and the physicality and so I just, no I absolutely love wearing the make-up.

Wenn es um Gefühle geht ist D'Argo sehr verschlossen. Wobei die Lösung die er wählt meist gewalttätig ausfällt und das nicht selten zur Unzufriedenheit seiner Team-Kollegen. Sein junges Alter und der damit zusammenhängende Drang sich zu behaupten verschärft diese Situation nur noch zusätzlich. D'Argo sorgt damit für viele Spannungen an Bord. Aber es ist auch allen bewusst, dass manche Probleme nur mit Leuten seines Schlages zu lösen sind.

After all, it doesn’t take much talent to act macho. But Farscape is filmed in Australia, which may explain why, refreshingly, the role of the show’s resident bruiser went to an actor who happened to be 6’5” and 220 pounds – Anthony Simcoe. I’ve been acting for 15 years in film, television and theatre, and directing in theatre’ Simcoe reveals ‘ I’m a young man, but I’ve been around the track.” Which may also explain by the bruiser in question, D’Argo, has developed far beyond the Klingon Xerox he at first appeared to be. “Initially, that’s the one area we really wanted to push’ Simcoe explains ‘because he was set up as an archetype, as a blustering warrior. AS soon as we were able to establish that archetype, we spent the rest of our journey trying to soften him up. Every opportunity we can get to push him in directions that aren’t the typical warrior, we try and take those opportunities. It makes him more interesting to write and more interesting to play. I think those heartfelt, sentimental, emotional moments are the key, the pinnacles for me.” As Farscape’s token actor-who-regularly-gets-buried-under-latex, Simcoe has more of the usual “I see more of the make-up team than my cast mates” stories. “It’s difficult. It’s a lot of stuff. It’s hot and heavy. But it’s much better now than it was years ago. Design is much more efficient, a lot lighter, a lot quicker to put on.”
