"I don't really have any great wisdom to impart," the noted indie filmmaker told me during a recent teleconference to promote his new DVD release, "An Evening With Kevin Smith." They're always billed as lectures, and I always tell them that I don't know how to lecture except to say don't f-ing smoke, so there's really nothing I can impart. I'm just kind of there to entertain," Smith said. "If they take a kernel of truth away from it and some kind of experience, some kind of education then that's great," Smith continued. "But no, I'm the last guy in the world you want to be taught by."

Home-Made DVD Box Gets Director's Nod
By Clive Young New YorkLet's say you're a big-time movie director who loves collecting DVDs. Most of your movies are out on disc, but on different labelsa frustrating situation which guarantees you'll never get your own box set, ala Hitchcock or Planet of the Apes . If this was you, you'd be indie auteur Kevin Smith, writer/director of Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy a trio of films that comprise his "New Jersey Trilogy" (which has actually expanded to a total of five films). Now, thanks to eBay, good timing, and machinery used to make funeral urns, Smith is finally getting his own box set. Taking a break from pre-production on his next movie, , Smith recalled how the box came into existence. "We had been thinking internally about making a box set of our own for quite some time. The movies are split up between different distributors Clerks and Chasing Amy are Buena Vista Home Video and Mallrats is Universal, so we knew those guys would never agree. Although I just saw recently that the Ed Burns box set has three movies from two different distributors; I was wondering how that worked, but I didn't look into it that deeply. In any event, I'd much rather make the box myself and have control over it. So we had been thinking about it for a while, but we didn't know what kind of box it would be, and then Paul's box came along."

Fatherhood makes filmmaker Kevin Smith want to cry
By BOB BAKER
Los Angeles Times Associated Press
Kevin Smith, in his office at CBS Studios in Los Angeles before the opening of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back , says Jersey Girl was delayed so he could say goodbye to the two slacker characters. But then Smith starts watching the assembled scenes from his new movie, Jersey Girl , which wrapped shooting in New Jersey, Philly and Manhattan in November, and something seems weird. Amid his trademark rapid-fire-wisenheimer dialogue are scenes of pregnancy, childbirth, stinky diapers, school plays and harsh words between a father (Ben Affleck) and his 7-year-old daughter. Smith, the creator of low-budget, high-wit films including

'An Askew View' calls 31-year-old from Jersey 'genius' By Lisa Intrabartola
Gannett News Service Independent filmmaker Kevin Smith has been called a lot of things - raunchy, blasphemous and homophobic, to name a few.
Gannett News Service Cinematic genius? A new book examines the storied career of director Kevin Smith. Smith's next film is "Jersey Girl," starring Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck.
Posterboy for Generation X
Director Kevin Smith is responsible for the following films:
  • "Clerks" (1994)
  • "Mallrats" (1995)
  • "Chasing Amy" (1997)
  • "Dogma" (1999)
  • "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" (2001)
  • "Jersey Girl" (2003) But author John Kenneth Muir calls him a genius. It's easier to "get" Smith, Muir says, when there isn't a generation gap between an artist and his audience to pervert his movies' intended meaning. "I completely get his sense of humor. It's for people who understand the life significance of 'Happy Days' reruns," says Muir, who wrote "An Askew View: The Films of Kevin Smith" (Applause, $18.95). Sharing a generation (32-year-old Muir is one year Smith's senior) and New Jersey roots (though he now resides with his wife in Monroe, N.C.) helped foster Muir's feelings of an unspoken kinship to Smith.

Kevin Smith - Red Bank, NJ This director first gained acclaim for the very low budget Clerks , released back in 1994. The five films below represent the original planned "trilogy" of the adventures of Jay & Silent Bob. While all of the films contain coarse language and sexual innuendo, Dogma raised the most controversy because of the perceived mocking of the Catholic Church - be sure to watch the extra feature commentary on the DVD for some feedback on that from Kevin Smith. The best plan of action is to watch the first four in order so that you have the complete background of all the characters and circumstances, then sit back and enjoy the wackiest of the bunch,

    IN MEMORIAM: BILLY WILDER
    March 29, 2002
Terence Smith looks at the work of movie director Billy Wilder.
TERENCE SMITH: Billy Wilder, one of Hollywood's greatest writer- directors, made more than 50 films in his prolific career. ACTRESS: Mr. Demille, I'm ready for my close-up. TERENCE SMITH: In 1950, he challenged Hollywood's comfort zone with his dark satire "Sunset Boulevard." Wilder's portrayal of an aging film star with delusions about her former fame earned him the Oscar for best screenplay. ACTOR: The audience left 20 years ago, now face it. ACTRESS: It's a lie. They still want me? ACTOR: No they don't. ACTRESS: What about the studio, what about Demille? ACTOR: He was trying to spare your feelings. TERENCE SMITH: Wilder, known to his friends as a cynic and a romantic, focused his films on human frailties especially greed. JACK LEMMON: ("The Apartment") I have my own office now. You may be interested to know I'm the second youngest executive in this country. The only one younger is the grandson of the chairman of the board. TERENCE SMITH: In "The Apartment," Jack Lemmon played a corporate climber trying to impress Shirley MacLean's character. The film brought Wilder a first: Three Academy Awards for best screenplay, best director, and best film.

Kevin Smith, who runs ViewAskew Productions, wrote and directed the independent hits "Clerks" (1994), "Chasing Amy" (1997), and "Dogma" (1999), among others. Here, Smith talks about how he wound up in the director's chair and why he was surprised by his success and why sentimentalism about Hollywood's supposed heyday may not be warranted. This interview was conducted in May 2001. What drew you to the movies? I was quite drawn to the movies as a child, because I was always a portly kid, and sports was never really my bag, and escapism seemed to kind of be it. Life was so terrible that I had to go kind of unwind in "Star Wars" to forget who I was. ... You know, I was raised on television. I was a true TV baby, and the parents were never, like, "No, too much TV is bad." [They] were like, "Go ahead, you know, at least you're not doing drugs" and I was four at the time. So I was really into entertainment from a young age, but never really thought about working in film. It seemed like other people did that, not people in New Jersey. So I never really considered it as a career until I was about 21. [On my] twenty-first birthday, I went to see a movie, Richard Linklater's "Slacker" at the Angelika Film Center up in New York. And it was a real eye-opening experience, because it was not the standard studio fare that I was used to seeing everywhere, was weaned on. It was kind of my first independent film. And I was really just taken aback by it, like, "Wow, this counts as a movie? Nothing's happening really, just people walking around." We don't even have one main character; it's just one character leads to the next, and leads to the next, leads to the next. It was just a string of characters talking about nothing, no plot, just a lot of dialogue.

The Hudsucker Proxy ... The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Spanking the Monkey . Funnier than all these, and surely the current front-runner for comedy of the year, is Kevin Smith's Clerks , the hilariously R-rated debut about life behind the counter at a Central Jersey convenience store. Smith, who filmed his low-budget black-and-white feature at the Quick Stop shop where he worked, set out to make a film with "no meaning whatsoever just a lot of [four-letter word] jokes." Despite his original intention, however, the director slipped, and a theme about the ennui of today's youth wormed its way in, giving Clerks a slight dramatic underpinning to its often-uproarious vignettes.
