Angband 2.8.3 for OS/2 - by Trevor Smith Back in the dim recesses of computer history, there was a program originally developed on mainframes called Rogue. Because of the capabilities of machines at that time, Rogue was a completely text based game, but for some it was extremely addictive. Later, a man named Robert Alan Koeneke, while working at the University of Oklahoma, created a Rogue-like game on the VAX VMS called Moria. Moria spawned a virtual gaggle of games, one of which was Angband (and Angband itself has mutated into many forms since its origin too). Through the years, Angband has evolved, improved and been ported to numerous operating systems and hardwares. At least five main developers have worked on the main Angband project over at least ten years, and hordes of others have tinkered with the code or offered ideas for enhancements. The end result of all this development time is one of the most addictive although in some cases "ugly" games ever produced. I say ugly because for OS/2, Angband is still a text-mode only game. It doesn't look pretty, no matter what font you use to display it in its all-text glory. It's as silent as a pretty undisturbed and very ordinary grave. It doesn't set out to impress you from the start. But give it time, and it will catch you as surely as a spider's web catches a fly. ADOM is 'rogue-like', possibly the ultimate rogue-like game. In a maze of ascii-rendered forests and mountain ranges, peaceful and less-peaceful villages and clearings, twisty little caves and other subterranean haunts, you guide your pre-rolled character, who may be one of many races and professions, fighting, bartering, chatting, gambling and mostly exploring. DEVELOPER/Terminal Reality Survival-horror games go down a storm on the consoles. Now developer Terminal Reality - famed for flight simulator Fly! - has got a piece of the hack 'em up action. Mike, unbiased by the excessive quantity of free booze he consumed at the New Orleans launch party, checks out Nocturne I need a new graphics card. No, really - up until now I have been more than happy with the TNT card which, although a bit old hat these days, pairs nicely with a PIII-500 to roll along just fine. Until Nocturne landed on my desk, that is. Could this be the most demanding game yet released? It needs a 400MHz processor, 1GB+ of hard drive space, and 'suggests' either a Matrox G400 or a Rage 128 The Stranger, and friends So why does Nocturne , a simple console-style combat/adventure game, put such extreme demands on gamers' systems? The finger of blame is pointing soundly at the 3D engine. The Nocturne Engine - for so it is called - features real-time well, everything. Shadows, volumetric lighting, volumetric fog, reflections, lens-flares, a skeletal-based character animation system, 3D positional audio, and surround sound. Lots of these features were only present in professional 3D rendering software a few short years ago - and they were generally expected to take a few minutes per frame, at least. Games like Nocturne need to shift 20 or 30 a second to look smooth. Times have certainly changed.

But Eidos has decided there is still some mileage in the 'millennial angst' concept - hence Urban Chaos Urban Chaos is a refreshing new direction for third person action games. The ex- Bullfrog boys at developer Mucky Foot have seen fit to make the heroine of their first outing a realistically proportioned, loud-mouthed Afro-Caribbean. D'arci Stern is cast as a front line cop with the Union City Police Department, in late 1999. But, as issuing parking tickets, arresting drunks and beating up homeless people could get boring, the plot is spiced up with the antics of Union City's very own gang of millennial nutjobs - the Wildcats. Brings back memories of my driving test Mucky Foot has been developing this game simultaneously on PC and PlayStation - and it shows. The simple and intuitive control system is the first sign; a handful of buttons are all that is needed to send D'arcy spinning around the levels. Next, the tightly focused, level and objective based mission structure gives more clues.
