2. William Smith
William Smith (17691839). William Smith, notes written January 5, 1796. WilliamSmith was born on March 23, 1769, into a family of small farmers.
William Smith (1769-1839)
Fossils have been long studied as great curiosities, collected with great pains, treasured with great care and at a great expense, and shown and admired with as much pleasure as a child's hobby-horse is shown and admired by himself and his playfellows, because it is pretty; and this has been done by thousands who have never paid the least regard to that wonderful order and regularity with which nature has disposed of these singular productions, and assigned to each class its peculiar stratum. William Smith, notes written January 5, 1796 William Smith was born on March 23, 1769, into a family of small farmers. He received little formal education, but from an early age took an interest in exploring and collecting fossils in his native Oxfordshire in England. At the same time, he learned geometry, surveying, and mapping; at the age of eighteen he became an assistant surveyor, learning his trade from the master surveyor Edward Webb. Surveying required Smith to travel all over England; in 1794 he toured the entire country, and then he began to supervise the digging of the Somerset Canal in southwestern England, a job that lasted six years. The job of surveying canal routes required detailed knowledge of the rocks through which the canal was to be dug. This led Smith to examine the local rocks very carefully. While doing this, Smith observed that the fossils found in a section of sedimentary rock were always in a certain order from the bottom to the top of the section. This order of appearance could also be seen in other rock sections, even those on the other side of England. As Smith described it

14. William Smith The Actor
A working hollywood actor. Lending his presence to over 200 movies and 150 TV appearances.
W illiam S mith T he A ctor 'There is a rugged authenticity in the performance of Smith.' Hollywood Reporter William Smith, a working Hollywood actor. One whose face, is probably more recognizable than his name.  Lending his unstoppable presence to over four hundred films and television appearances, his eclectic body of work spans every genre. Smith made his stage debut, at the Los Angeles Friars Club, in Down To Earth .  He starred, with Warren Oates at the Player's Ring, in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.  As Stanley Kowalske, in A Streetcar Named Desire, the reviews were outstanding.  Bill received accolades for his performance, at the Palladium in South Africa, as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest. In spite of his scholarly background, his dangerous good looks made him a natural to be cast in the black hat. Some of these more notable performances are as the outlaw in The Ultimate Warrior , as Gene Wilders' nemesis in The Frisco Kid and the Russian Colonel in Red Dawn . Taking screen villainy to new heights as Falconetti in Rich Man, Poor Man

18. Fichte's Outlines Of The Doctrine Of Knowledge
Full text of william smith's translation of this 1810 work of Fichte's.
Johann Fichte (1810)
Outlines of the Doctrine of Knowledge
Source Outline of the Doctrine of Knowledge (1810). From The Popular Works of Johann Gottlieb Fichte , translated by William Smith, Pub: Trubner and Co., 1889. The whole of this essay is reproduced.
THE Doctrine of Knowledge, apart from all special and definite knowing , proceeds immediately upon Knowledge itself, in the essential unity in which it recognises Knowledge as existing; and it raises this question in the first place - How this Knowledge can come into being, and what it is in its inward and essential Nature? The following must be apparent: - There is but One who is absolutely by and through himself, - namely, God; and God is not the mere dead conception to which we have thus given utterance, but he is in himself pure Life. He can neither change nor determine himself in aught within himself, nor become any other Being; for his Being contains within it all his Being and all possible Being, and neither within him nor out of him can any new Being arise. If, therefore, Knowledge must be, and yet be not God himself, then, since there is nothing but God, it can only be God

"It was only a matter of being willing to believe in a power greater than myself. Nothing more was required for me to make my beginning."
William G. Wilson

William Griffith Wilson (also known as Bill W.) and Dr. Robert Smith (also known as Dr. Bob) are generally accepted as co-founders of the fellowship known as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), the worldwide organization that offers hope to the many suffering from alcoholism. The AA Twelve Step program offers the alcoholic a way to develop a satisfying life without alcohol. The founding of this worldwide organization is generally dated to June 10, 1935, the day Smith took his last drink, a scarce month after a life changing meeting with Wilson Treating alcoholism as both a physical and spiritual disease, the two men would give hope to countless fellow alcoholics. Their belief and experience would provide the basis for the current work of AA, including putting forward the idea of the Twelve Step program. This program, also embraced by Narcotics Anonymous and Gamblers Anonymous, represents hope for all those who have reached out for help to end their own addiction.

william godwin and informal education
'Refer them to reading, to conversation, to meditation; but teach them neither creeds nor catechisms, either moral or political.'
William Godwin A Vindication of the Rights of Woman -1792), the father of Mary Shelley (the author of Frankenstein - 1818) and the father-in-law of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (who was influenced by his radical libertarianism).
Having turned away from the ministry Godwin earned a living through writing and teaching. The former included short novels, biographies and newspaper pieces. In response to the fierce debate and argument around the French Revolution (from 1789 on), Godwin wanted to set out a properly philosophical and principled statement of political theory. The result was An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice which appeared in 1793. It brought him momentary fame and some wealth (a thousand guineas). He followed it up in 1794 with a novel The Adventures of Caleb Williams . Peter Marshall describes it as ‘a gripping story of flight and pursuit designed to show how "the spirit and character of the government intrudes itself into every rank of society"’. The book was hailed as a masterpiece. ‘It is not only a work of brilliant social observation, but may be considered the first thriller and the first psychological novel which anticipates the anxieties of modern existentialism’ (1993: 196).
