Lacrosse
One of the most storied programs in collegiate athletics, the Hobart lacrosse team celebrated its 100th season in 2002. From its beginnings in 1898 playing high schools, clubs, and the few other colleges with a team, to its first national championship in 1972, to its total domination of Division III, including 12 consecutive national championships, through the program's elevation to Division I, Hobart has been the home to some of the most talented student-athletes in the game. Two-hundred and forty-eight Statesmen have earned All-America honors, since Miller Wisner became the first Hobart All-American in 1922.

William Smith
"The Father of English Geology"
A brief survey of his work in the Bath, Somerset, (UK) District.
William Smith was born in the village of Churchill in Oxfordshire, on 23rd March 1769, and was the eldest son of a blacksmith, who died when William was quite young. Smith attended the village school, where he obtained only a rudimentary education, but he had an enquiring mind and took note of everything he observed in the countryside in which he lived, especially the geology.
In 1787, at the age of eighteen years, Smith was taken into the family of Edward Webb, a surveyor of Stow-on-the-Wold, and became assistant to him. Webb was impressed by his young assistant and gave him a great deal of encouragement. Whilst employed by Webb, Smith travelled around the countryside and was constantly adding to his knowledge of geology. Four years later, in 1791, Webb transferred to Smith the survey of an estate at Stowey in Somersetshire, and thus, eventually, he came to live and work in the Bath area.
It was at this period of time that projects for new canals were in progress and soon William Smith was to be involved in the construction of a canal near Bath, of which, today, few traces can be seen. This canal was the Somerset Coal Canal and it was to join up with the Somerset and Avon Canal at Limpley Stoke, near Bath, from the various collieries south-west of the city.

SMYTH (OR SMITH), WILLIAM
SMYTH, SIR W. W.—SNAIL Smyth was, like the other Cambridge men of his day, especially the Separatists, the bondservant of logic, and wherever he saw " the beckoning hand of a properly constructed syllogism " he was ready to follow. Yet none of those who, in his generation, took the grea' step had, according to Bishop Creighton, " a finer mind or a more beautiful soul. None of them succeeded in expressing with so mud reasonableness and consistency their aspirations after a spiritua system of religious belief and practice. None of thei.i founded the! opinions on so large and liberal a basis." In his last declaration hi expressed his sorrow for the censures he had passed on Anglicans and Brownists alike, and wrote " All penitent and faithful Christian are brethren in the communion of the outward church, b-. what name soever they are known; and we salute them ai with a holy kiss, being heartily grieved that we should be ren with so many sorts and schisms; and that only for matters o no moment." See J. H. Shakespeare, Baptist and Congregational Pioneers (London 1906); H. M. Dexter, The England and Holland of the Pilgrim (London and Boston, 1906). (A. J. G.)

He was issued Donation Certificate No. 740 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the Storming and Capture of Bexar, December 5 to 10, 1835. On April 8, 1838 he received Bounty Certificate No. 2936 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from October 13 to December 13, 1835. The land was surveyed in the Gonzales County.
