Aaron Sorkin is a man of many words For the writer of 'The West Wing' and 'Sports Night,' dialogue is music to his ears Tuesday, March 7, 2000 By JOHN LEVESQUE
POST-INTELLIGENCER TV CRITIC On a two-hour movie, the average screenplay runs 120 pages. Maybe 125. For "A Few Good Men," Aaron Sorkin's weighed in at 149. For "Schindler's List," on which he did a final "dialogue polish": 183 pages. And when he delivered the first draft of "The American President" to director Rob Reiner five years ago: a sumo-class 385 pages. "I completely fell in love with the sound of my own voice," Sorkin admits. The writerly ringleader of "Sports Night" and "The West Wing" does like to talk. Fast. If there were a speed limit on elocution, he'd be ticketed whenever he opened his mouth. Most of his characters talk the same way. Faster than a politician in a frying pan. Talk fascinates Sorkin. It's what made him become a writer. "I don't have stories to tell," he says, quite serious, his words spilling out between glottal stops and piling on top of each other like slices from a Salad Shooter.

Aaron Sorkin
Executive Producer/Creator, ABC's "Sports Night"
By Mike Dennis ( mdennis@Zap2it.com.com
Zap2it.com News Aaron Sorkin is a busy man. After completing his first season as executive producer/creator/writer of ABC's acclaimed series "Sports Night," Sorkin prepares for the fall TV season when "Sports Night" returns and his latest series, "The West Wing," launches on NBC. Sorkin, whose writing credits include the stage and screen version of "A Few Good Men," the feature films "The American President" and "Malice," and all 23 episodes of "Sports Night" last season, appears to have acquired a taste for the whiplash pace of TV. Zap2it.com spoke with Sorkin about "Sports Night," his success this season, and his busy, busy schedule. Check Out Full Video of Sorkin Interview Zap2it.com: You've had success as a playwright and a feature film writer, what prompted you to move to television? Aaron Sorkin: Actually I didn't make that decision to go into television and think of something (to write); it happened the other way around. I'd wanted to explore something that took place behind the scenes at a national cable sports television show. I kept thinking of it as a movie but nearly every time I would think about it, rather than one long story I'd be thinking of a lot of episodes. So it occurred to me to try and write a television series. I knew nothing about television, I just jumped in with both feet.

GIRLFRIEND: Huh. Well tell me if any of your characters have any decent relationships. Because aside from a few fuzzy scenes, it looks to me like most of the people on your shows are single. NewsHour with Jim Lehrer Transcript: Aaron Sorkin
PBS.com "The West Wing" writer and creator talks about how the line between fantasy and reality factors in when he plots out the program. The following are extended excerpts of his interview with the NewsHour. The NewsHour Media Unit is funded by a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts.
TERENCE SMITH: What was the original concept for this show? What interested you about the White House or the West Wing to do a dramatic show about it? AARON SORKIN: There's a great tradition in storytelling that's thousands of years old, telling stories about kings and their palaces, and that's really what I wanted to do. TERENCE SMITH: Right. And it's our king and it's our palace. AARON SORKIN: That's right. So obviously it's a fascinating world. There really isn't a story that you can't tell inside of it. It's very much a clearinghouse for anything that goes on in the world. So you're not at all limited. It's populated by people who, by and large, have terrific communication skills. Every day is an extraordinary day. For me, it was just a great area for storytelling. The timing of the creation TERENCE SMITH: Was the timing of this creation in any way pegged to or motivated by the huge attention on the White House vis-a-vis the Monica Lewinsky affair?

Aaron Sorkin’s smart women always seem to get dumber
By JOHN LEVESQUE
Seattle Union Record If you see me on the picket line this week, it may have nothing to do with my employment situation. Evidence is building to suggest that Aaron Sorkin is no friend of women, and it’s time we begin the protest before he goes all David E. Kelley on us. Sorkin, the creator of “The West Wing,” whose juggernautical Emmy sweep in September has vaulted the Wednesday night series (9 p.m., KING/5) to a regular spot in the Nielsen Top 10, is systematically trashing the female characters in TV’s best ensemble, just as he did with his other critically acclaimed series, the late, lamented “Sports Night.” Take White House press secretary C.J. Cregg, played with spectacular strength and conviction by Allison Janney. Week in and week out C.J. is a victim of belittlement at the hands of her male colleagues and, in the case of last week’s episode, President Josiah Bartlet himself. OK, it was good-natured ribbing over C.J.’s slighting of Notre Dame football, but it’s getting to the point where, just as we could always expect Lucy Ricardo to do something stupid and have Ricky fix it, we’ve been conditioned to wait for C.J.’s next gaffe and wonder along with the more experienced (read: smarter) guys if it will have a serious effect on life as we know it inside the Beltway. True, C.J. is supposed to be the least savvy, least confident member of our favorite White House senior staff, but, her Emmy for best supporting actress notwithstanding, Sorkin isn’t doing Janney any favors. Where Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe), Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford) and Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff) are also prone to humbling moments of mere-mortalism on “The West Wing,” C.J. is somehow the only one whose missteps are magnified under the lens of sexist condescension, as if a pat on the head will make everything better.

Aaron Sorkin Mauled by Fox
The disturbing appeal of Man vs. Beast
By Robert Weintraub

Bear experiences the thrill of victory Poor Aaron Sorkin. First, The West Wing is assailed by the roses and pathos of The Bachelorette . Now, he finds his literate, meaningful drama competing for viewers with the spectacle of 44 "little people" pulling a DC-10 in a race against an elephant. Let's face it—it's no contest. How can walking purposefully through hallways while having enlightening discussions on tax policy match a test of strength between a sumo wrestler and an orangutan? Just when the other networks started to muscle in on Fox's chokehold on moron television, Rupert Murdoch's boys gave us a little reminder last night of just who is king of lowbrow county. Man vs. Beast , the one-hour special that matched human and animal in various feats of athleticism, should have been titled When Bad Sports-Bar Debates Get Greenlighted . Who hasn't sat around the bar arguing over who would win a fight between a shark and an alligator?

Sorkin set to script remainder of 2000 presidential campaign
by Chet Mink In a bipartisan move that is sure to make history worth videotaping, "West Wing" creator Aaron Sorkin has agreed to write the scripts for the Democratic and Republican primaries, conventions and ultimately, the 2000 presidential election. Sorkin also holds an option on the rights to the winner's subsequent presidential term or terms. "In effect, I will determine who rules this nation, and how," Sorkin said yesterday. "It's a writer's dream come true." Flanked by front-runners Al Gore and George W. Bush, along with John McCain, Martin Sheen and a gaggle of fringe candidates, Sorkin held court for an assembled media throng at the Pentagon, which he repeatedly referred to as "Stage 7." GOP heir apparent Bush said he was all for the idea, because it was getting "damned tiring and damned annoying" making all those decisions. The free time, he added, will allow him to "enjoy the little things." The Texas governor said he hopes to relax at home and watch some videos with his wife, including his personal favorite, "Being There." Gore conceded that the historic relinquishing of control over one's campaign may be seen by some as "troubling, at best." But he then made a very strong hand gesture and pointed out, "I just wasn't very happy with my character development, and neither were the focus groups. This is a bold move to change that, and the American people should respond."

C/O NBC
Dear Mr. Sorkin,
Sir. You are a giant pulsating brain. I know this for a fact. You are razor sharp, spotlight bright, a million candlepower. You are a genius. Also, you are a real person, flawed, complicated, carrying within you the seeds of greatness. I know these things are true, because you write the words and create the world for the greatest show on poor man's cable. I know these things about you, because the people portrayed on your show The West Wing are all those qualities, and more. I know these things because they are proven to me, every Wednesday at 9:00pm.
Television is often portrayed as the opiate of the masses. I myself, when deprived of other, more powerful drugs, may be found zonked out in front of the TV at some shameful hour, flipping through infomercials, vaguely and futilely hoping for a glimpse of nipple. But television, like recreational drug use, has its place. In times of national crisis it is to the news we turn, wishing less for the truth than to know what everyone else knows; the boob tube can serve as a powerful comfort. And when its fiction is sufficiently well written and well structured, presented with enough care and respect for its subjects and subject matter — that is when watching TV is not time wasted.
I think it is remarkable enough a thing to say that

Aaron Sorkin, The Voice of The Future
I imagine most readers by now have read or heard of Aaron Sorkin's claim that The West Wing is A) Non-Political, B) Non-Partisan, and C) Not a television show. Okay, he never said that last bit, but the implicit denial of reality in that is about as strong. Jonah Goldberg went so far as to call him a Big Fat Liar . When Jonah's willing to speak his mind like that, you know that he's, well, he's typing. He pretty much speaks like that all the time. But I digress. Anyway, it's not exactly a newsflash that Aaron Sorkin is biased, or that his show is little more than a weekly commercial for the Democratic party. But thanks to campaign finance reform, his voice and the voices of those like him have just increased dramatically in power. If that doesn't scare the bejeebers out of you, you aren't breathing. Or perhaps you're a Baldwin or a Sheen reading this in between detox sessions. See, the new campaign finance bill puts heavy restrictions on commercial political speech 30 days before a primary and 60 days before a general election. We are supposed to believe that as a result, politicians will be watching their calendars, waiting for the day when they can stop advertising and communicating. We are also supposed to believe that opposition groups will likewise stop fighting for or against specific candidates after those deadlines.
