But looking at the film more deeply one sees that it has no basis found in any real world alien abductee tales such as the Fire in the Sky, Communion, and the Betty and Barney Hill Incident movie do. The movie presents a somewhat gentile taling of alien abduction. One man loses his daughter on one fateful day to a bright light in the sky. He lives his life wondering what became of his child; of his flesh and blood. On one day he feels drawn to create a sculpture out of mashed potates of a mountain. He does not know why he does this or where this mountain is found in the world. But feeling drawn to do something, he travels to a place he feels he is meant to be. On top of a mountain surrounded by the best security in the world, the world's greatest secret is being kept. A rendevous is planned between an alien vessel and humans on the ground. This would be the world's first true documented Close Encounter of the Third Kind. Sound systems are being checked; it is believed that harmonic tones can be used as a universal form of greeting and communication. Finally the day for the great meeting does arrive. A giant vessel circles above the moutain. On the mountain 5 tones are played in an attempt to illicit a response and a response does come. The alien vessel repeats the tones with glass shattering volume. The ship proceeds to land and human children and short aliens come out side by side. A moment of friendship is reached for the universe it seems. Forgotten is the nature of kidnapping that the aliens have inflicted on humanity. The movie has a very slow start, but the last 20 minutes create cinematic history. Most study and analyzation of the film focuses on the dramatic landing sequence, the musical tones, and the encounters.

who needs saving BY ERIC SCHLOSSER My friend Kevin and I were lingering over one too many bourbons. The jukebox was playing "What If God Was One of Us." We were running late. "I think we should go now." "It's probably a good idea." Barely walking straight, fighting the blizzard, we were approaching the building. "Yeah, I saw Private Ryan , I only missed the first 30 minutes," he joked, referring to the much-heralded opening sequence. We approached the box office. The debarkation was starting an hour after its listing in the Moscow Times. We went for the other half of the bottle. And then we were sitting in the theatre when the film started. Saving Private Ryan. Nowadays, in Normandy, an American family from Central Casting, led by old Ryan (see especially the apple-cheeked, corn-fed, strawberry blonde granddaughters), walks through the alleys of the American cemetery (the opening sequence as well). Suddenly the elder kneels. Heart attack? No, he found the tomb he was looking for. The tomb of the man who died saving him (I propose a better title: Dying Saving Private Ryan ). He then turns to his wife: "Tell me I've been a good man." Tell me my life was worthy of the slaughter to save me. "Yes," she answers, doubtless. Good. Ryan can now die in peace, since he didn't die in war. End of the movie.

Robert Fulford's column about Petra, Jordan Globe and Mail , June 18, 1997) In Steven Spielberg's 1989 movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade , Sean Connery and Harrison Ford ride on horseback toward what looks like a Greco-Roman temple built into the side of a rose-coloured mountain. This is the film's great visual moment, so wondrous and other-worldly that at first it looked to me like a computer-generated melding of live action with an artist's idealized painting. Could anywhere on earth be as romantic and powerful as that? But the setting turned out to be altogether real, the ancient mountain city of Petra in southern Jordan, a site that has begun attracting more tourists since Jordan and Israel made peace. Last week I discovered for myself that Petra is both lovelier and more dramatic than any painting, photograph, or film of it. As Rose Macaulay wrote in 1953 in Pleasure of Ruins: "If ever a dead city held romance it is Petra....hewn out of ruddy rock in the midst of a mountain wilderness, sumptuous in ornament and savage in environs, poised in wildness like a great carved opal glowing in a desert, this lost caravan city staggers the most experienced traveller." It certainly staggered me. Among its charms is an element of difficultyit's harder to reach than many great monuments. You must walk to it, down the Siq, a mountain pass 1.2-kilometres long. A journey through nature toward culture, the walk itself unfolds as a surprising pleasure: we can admire the gorgeous variety of rock on the natural walls of the Siq as we anticipate the city up ahead. We know roughly what's at the end of the journey, because we've seen the photos, but the slow approach heightens the drama.
